Evie’s pov
I grow silent as her words sink in. With pup? Impossible. Ryan and I only had sex once. It was one night, one chaotic night I wish to never remember.
Quincy gauges for my reaction, peering at me carefully as if she was scared I’d lash out or burst into tears. But I just shook my head and let out a small laugh, “Yea no,” I stand up and head to the sink, opening the faucet. “I think I’d know if I was-
“You wouldn’t,” Quincy points out. “At least not in the early stages. That’s why we have to be sure. Your scent is off and that usually happens when-
“Can you drop this topic for tonight please?” I cut in her words, toweling my hand dry as I stare at her in the mirror.” It’s suppose to be all about you tonight. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Quincy eyes me for a few minutes before caving in with a sigh and nods. “Fine. But we’ll talk about it soon.”
I was just grateful that she’d at least drop it for tonight so I can gather my thoughts. Serena had been awfully quiet and that confused me.
‘Serena?’ I called out to her. The entire day she’d been on the mute challenge.
She doesn’t reply, which worries me.
When we joined the other girls, Emeka was just returning with the flashlight. “Got the flashlight. Now we need more popcorn.”
“Evie and I will get it,” Quincy says quickly and loops her arm around mine before I can speak. I nearly topple on my face as she drags me out of the room with her.
The second we are alone the silence thickens and grows even more when we’re in the kitchen. It was so suffocating that I blurted out. “I’m not pregnant.
Quincy glances at me as she lets me go and opens a cabinet. “I never said you were,” she points out as she grabs a bag of popcorn. “But just to be on the safe side,” she tosses me the bag and I catch it. “We need to check.”
We were the only ones in the kitchen, thankfully.
I shake my head. “It’s impossible,” I breathed as I shove the bag into the microwave and press the button harder than I needed to. “It was one time. One stupid time,” I utter under my breath.
“It only takes once sometimes,” Quincy’s words had me snapping my eyes to her. “Wolves are not like humans Evie. You know that.”
But I didn’t have a wolf at the time.
Well, I thought I didn’t.
I shake my head, growing nervous. Serena had yet to say a word too so that only added to my anxiety.
Why was she so quiet?
“Evie-
I shake my head no. “No Quincy. You have no idea what that would mean if I truly were. I refuse to even think about it.”

Before Quincy can respond, footsteps echo closer, I smell Gavin and Jonah before they even make their presence
known.
They round the corner into the kitchen and Gavin’s eyes immediately narrowed on his sister. “What’s with the long face?” He spared me a questioning glance and I quickly look away.
I didn’t want him to see the fear in my eyes and if Quincy noticed my scent was different, surely they will too. Especially him. Panic swirls inside me.
Quincy straightened. “Nothing. Just waiting for the popcorn to be ready,”
Jonah leans against the doorframe and crosses his arms as he peers at Quincy. “I didn’t get an invite to the party,” he suddenly says, causing everyone to stare at him in shock.
Gavin’s eyes narrowed on his best friend. “Why would you be invited to a girls slumber party?” His arms cross over his chest.
Quincy flushes at Jonah’s words and looks at me with slightly widened eyes. Jonah shrugs. “You know I like to tease little Quincy whenever I get the chance.”
Gavin is about to say something but the loud beeping of the microwave cuts in. Quincy rushes to get the popcorn out and tells me to grab the bowl before ushering me out of the room.
When we were a couple of feet away from the two men, she let out a sigh. We both did but for different reasons. He looked so good,” her head throws back a little and she lets out a hmmm sound.
I huff out a small laugh. “You’re hopeless.”
“I am turning eighteen in a few. I’m allowed to be hopeless. At least for a little bit,” she giggles and nudges me with her hip as we walk back to her room. From here I can already hear the girls laughing and giggling.
“And if the Moon Goddess is kind enough, I’ll be hopelessly in love with him as my mate,” she sighs, her eyes twinkling. The word makes my chest tighten. Mate. Was the moon goddess kind or cruel for making Ryan be my mate? Perhaps cruel.
I swallow and push the thought away. I knew Quincy didn’t mean to make my mind stray to him and I rather not make her see my change of mood. I didn’t want her to feel bad on her special day so I plastered on a smile and giggle.
Back in the room, the girls rush us both the second we step inside and Emeka snatches the bowl from my hands dramatically. “Finally what took you guys so long? I was starving!”
For a couple of hours the girls spoke of stories that were either made up or real. It was fun however, my mind wasn’t truly a hundred percent there. It had strayed to my worries about potentially being pregnant. Though the nausea had calmed down, I was still worried about the what ifs.
The time goes by quickly and before we could even blink it was now 11:57 p.m. Quincy glances at me and I saw the spark of fear in her eyes. She feared Jonah wouldn’t turn out to be her mate and if anyone understood that fear, it
was…me.
I reach for her hand and give it a soft silent reassuring squeeze. And when the girls begin to chant, her palms grow clammy.
“Six!” They yelled, giggling as they stare at Quincy with smiles on their faces. When they got on one, everyone stood up, including me to cheer and wish Quincy a happy birthday.
Before Quincy can process anything, the girls lift her off the ground. She lets out a shocked sharp sound. “To the

pool we go!” They giggled, lifting her higher as Emeka opens the door.
