Gavin’s pov

The thing about my sister is that she was very nosy. Too nosy. I didn’t hate her for it but there were things that shouldn’t concern her. This one being it.

I turn around and give her a hard stare that tells her to keep her mouth shut about this. Ryan pretends to not know Evie is here. His father either must’ve not told him about the call we had or he was lying. He called and asked questions, fishing for answers. He had been trying to see if I saw his ‘mate’.

I wasn’t sure what game he and his father were playing at but I wouldn’t risk letting them harm the innocent girl anymore. She was now part of my pack and was under my protection and authority.

“Gavin, he sounded like he really wanted her back,” Quincy points out and I curl my lips into a sneer.

“I was not risking her going back into danger,” I snarled under my breath.

Ryan had called four nights ago. Though his voice had been controlled then, I could hear the desperation in them.

“Have you seen her Gavin?” He had questioned, desperation soaking into his tone.

I had leaned back in the chair, my thumb playing at the pointed end of the pen as I let the tension stretched on

more.

“Seen who?” I had asked calmly, feigning disinterest. There was a pause then. Until he said the words. “My mate.”

He sounded possessive, claiming even. Like he wasn’t the one who rejected and hurt her. Like he hadn’t casted the innocent girl aside like she meant nothing to him.

She came in my territory broken and alone, newly shifted and reeked of fear. I can’t imagine what these monsters at Silver Blood pack had done to her. Her soul, her innocent soul had been shattered.

I also can’t imagine what they had planned for her now that he was pretending to not know that I had called his father about that very same mate. Whatever sick game they were playing, I want no part of it and I wasn’t stupid.

“I haven’t seen your mate, alpha Ryan,” I said bluntly, knowing that he could wage a war on us if he knew that she was here and I had lied. But that was a war I was willing to fight. From the moment the little white wolf stumbled on my territory, she was now mine to protect.

“You’ll let me know if she stumbles upon your territory. I need her back,” he had breathed with fear before the line went suddenly dead.

Back in the present, Quincy, my nosy sister eyes narrow on me. “They can wage war for her and the council would be on their side. She is his mate unfortunately and was part of their pack.”

My wolf stirs in irritation.” He rejected her and sent others to kill her. And now pretends to not know she’s here, feigning he wants her back. The council will not be on their side.”

Quincy looks unsure and glances at Jonah who nods as if telling her I was right. He hadn’t said a word, wanting not to meddle between brother and sister. Quincy tears her gaze away from his and looks back at me. I continue.

“I would rather fight this war with them,” I said roughly, the words leaving my mouth before I could soften them. ” than give Evie back to those monsters.”

The air between Quincy and me went still. She didn’t say a word. She didn’t even argue like she normally does. She just peers at me. Really stared at me as if trying to see if I was dishonest with my words and intentions.

“You really mean what you say,” she said softly. It wasn’t a question, it was like a shocked statement.

My jaw flexed as I tensed it. “I do. She’s part of our pack now and you out of everyone know we protect our own. Even from one’s mate if necessary.”

My wolf stirred, pacing in my head as he silently agreed with me..

Evie had not come here as an enemy. She hadn’t crossed our borders with violence tainted in her heart or deception in her scent. She had stumbled in trembling and broken in ways no one her age should ever be broken.

She had looked at everything like it might hurt her. Even me. Especially me. And now she carries a child.

His child.

My hands curled into fists at my sides. Silver Blood had already taken enough from her. Her safety, her trust and her purity.

The girl was just eighteen and seem to have gone through so much. This is why the second I knew I’d take care of her, I knew we had to make her stronger for herself. Not for the pack, but for her own good.

I may have been a little harsh and so was Jonah but our intentions were for her to get out of that fear mentality and actually fight to get stronger. And now that she was finally trying to become who she was always meant to be….. the monsters wanted her back.

But not on my watch.

They would not take her child. They would not take her.

Quincy crossed her arms. “They want to hurt her more,” she said quietly. “Don’t they?”
