Gavin’s pov

The council members exchange glances.” She will oversee combat training only,” I add. “She won’t fall under Alpha Ryan’s authority.”

Ryan’s jaw tightens but he doesn’t utter a word. He doesn’t know his ex mate is my head warrior. The very same innocent woman he ordered to be killed is now the one to help his dreadful pack.

Funny how life works.

After a few silent moments the council comes to an agreement. “We agree.”

Evie’s pov

Everyone could sense the tension the second he stepped foot back into the territory. Alpha Gavin was furious.

“Mom, is uncle Gavin mad?” Atlas questioned as we watch Gavin storm into the pack house. He hadn’t greeted any of the people and didn’t seem to have even noticed Atlas and I on a patch of grass having a little ice cream picnic like I had promised Atlas.

I forced a small smile, even though my chest felt tight with worry. “No, of course not,” I murmured softly, reaching over and wiping a smear of strawberry ice cream from the corner of his mouth with my thumb. “He’s just… busy.”

Atlas frowned, his little brows furrowing together in a way that reminded me too much of him. My heart clenches. “He didn’t say hi,” The disappointment in his voice made me reach up and run my fingers through his hair to soothe him.

“He didn’t see us baby,” I utter. “We’re so far away and under this huge tree,” I tried to joke and thankfully Atlas laughs and nods, completely buying my excuse.

My heartbeat quickens. Gavin always said hi. Always.

No matter how busy he was and no matter how serious things got. He always made time for Atlas. Which meant whatever had happened at the council meeting……it wasn’t small.

My wolf stirred uneasily.

Gavin was never this careless with his emotions. Never reckless. He was always controlled and never leaked his emotions out. But now it was different. It seemed he couldn’t cover it up this time around.

They must’ve riled him up there.

I swallowed, forcing myself to appear calm for Atlas’s sake. “Finish your ice cream before it melts,” I told him gently as I ran my fingers through his soft hair.

He nodded, now back happy without a care in the world.

A couple of minutes later Quincy barges out of the door, her eyes wide like saucers. She looks around the yard and spots me and Atlas under the willow tree. Her face was pale, spiking alarm inside me.

I stood up as she rushed over. “Quincy, what is it?” I rushed out. She glanced at Atlas and tried to plaster on a calm expression on her face when he looks up intrigued.

“Why don’t I bring Atlas home and we can watch Garfield while you go speak to Gavin?” She suggested, her eyes telling me that I should really go to Gavin. What had really happened in that meeting?

I glanced down at Atlas, who was now licking the side of his melting ice cream. He was completely oblivious to the tension tightening around us. Good.

I crouch beside him and gather his attention. “Hey baby, Aunt Quincy is going to bring you home and watch your favorite Garfield show,” I reach up to run my hands through his hair and he looks up, cheeks messy with ice

cream.

His brows furrowed as a sad pout paints on his face. “But you said it’s my time now,”

My heart clenches hard and painfully at his clear disappointment. I hate that I am the one to disappoint him but Quincy’s tone alone suggested I am needed in Gavin’s office.

I cup his messy little face in my hands and wipe at the strawberry streaks on his cheeks with my thumbs. “I know, baby” I whisper softly as I cup his chin with affection. “And I promise I’ll make it up tonight. Just you and me, I promise.”

His lips wobble slightly, eyes a little teary. Shit, I didn’t want him to cry. I hated it when he cried. “Promise?”

“I promise,” I say firmly, pressing my forehead gently against his before I plant my lips there and give him a soft

kiss.

He studies me for a moment, like he’s trying to decide if he believes me and after a few seconds he nods. “Okay.”

Relief and guilt tangle together in my chest. Guilt because I wasn’t sure if I could keep that promise and I hated breaking promises to him.

Quincy steps forward and takes his hand gently. He stands up, ice cream in his grasp. “Come on, little man. Let’s go watch a grumpy orange cat.”

Atlas brightens instantly. “He’s not grumpy! He’s just hungry all the time!”

Despite everything, a small smile tugs at my lips. His innocence always warmed my heart.

Quincy gives me one last look before she tugs him away. That look screamed that I should prepare myself for bad news. My gut twisted.

I straighten slowly as they walk away, watching until they disappear from my sight and then turn to walk towards the pack house.

The second I step foot into the house I could somehow sense the tension in this place. I grow rigid, Serena at the edge as we make our way to his office.

Stopping before the double doors, I take in a deep breath. The tension was stronger here. Much stronger.

I can hear him pacing the floors, his boots hitting the tiles over and over. I lift my hand, pause for a few seconds and then whip up some courage to open the door.

He’s pacing like a madman, hands in his hair running through every strand aggressively. I’ve never seen him this way before.

Before him are Jonah and Kwan, staring at him with the same alarmed expression I have on my face.

“Gavin,” I called out to him as I enter the room. The others turn to me and Gavin pauses. He slowly turns to me, shielding his emotions in his eyes when they stare at me.

I look at the other two and their eyes cast down, shoulders stiff with tension. What the hell was going on?

I step further into the room and close the door behind me, my eyes lock on him. “What happened?” I asked tightly as anxiety crawls up my chest.

For a few rigid moment Gavin just stares. “Alpha-
