Evie’s pov
No, no, no. This couldn’t be right. No, I heard wrongly. I must have,
There was no way I heard correctly.
We must help the silver blood pack? The same pack that destroyed the innocent girl inside me? Ryan’s pack…..
“No.” One word came out of my mouth with acid.
Gavin tears his eyes away and runs a hand through his hair. Frustration emanates from him. “Evie
“No,” I snapped. “You promised that we would not meddle in their affairs. You said-
“I know what I said!” He snapped, whirling around to stare at me. I flinch back and his eyes soften.
He lets out a sigh and lifts his fingers to pinch the bridge of his nose. “I know what I said,” he repeats, his voice quieter now. “And I meant it when I said it.”
My chest rises and falls fast as my heart pounds, hard. Serena is clawing at me from the inside, pacing, snarling, reliving things we have spent years trying to bury.
Silver Blood.
Ryan….
The name made me feel clammy.
I searched Gavin’s eyes. There was something he haven’t told me. Something he wasn’t sure how to say. “What did you tell them?” I breathed, my fingers twitching.
He holds my gaze. “I told them no.”
This wasn’t all, no, not with the way he shifted on his foot, not with the way his eyes now tear away from me.” What aren’t you telling me Gavin?” I question. 1
Through the three years of knowing each other Gavin and I had grown close. Close to the point where I knew he was hiding something. Something that would upset me.
For a moment, it’s silent and that silence suffocates me. Until he finally responds. “They threatened us.”
“If we refuse,” he continues. “They will withdraw council protection from our pack.”
My breath staggered. “We will stand alone if the vampires strike us next. We are a powerful force Evie. But not powerful enough to stand against thousands of vampires. Especially when we have no idea how many we are up against,”
Realization sinks into me and I don’t say a word yet. Not when my heart is pounding and my ears are ringing. I just stare at him and then whisper. “So you agreed?”
“Yes.” He nods and tears his eyes away once more. I can see the strain of muscle on his jaw as he clenched it. But there was definitely something else he was keeping away from me.
I take a step forward once more. “With what terms Gavin?”
His eyes flicker to me and he straightens, jaw clenching harder. “You.”

My body goes rigid and Serena stirs.
“They want you to train their warriors-
I shook my head and started pacing around. They want me to train their warriors? “No.” I cut in his words before he could even finish his sentence and shake my head furiously. “I refuse.”
“I won’t fucking do it Gavin!” I snapped, rage forming inside me. Train the ones who mocked me? Help Ryan who sent warriors to kill me that very same night he made love to me? I refuse. I can’t.
“They specifically asked for you Evie,” he breathed out harshly. “The council requested you be the one to do it. Cedric…he knows you’re the head warrior here. He will know if I send someone else in your place.”
Fuck. Fuck fuck!
I tug at the strands and swear I pull out some from the root but I can’t even bother to care about it right now.” Why me?” I groaned, my heart pounding.
Ryan didn’t know I was the one who holds the position of head warrior here. Most don’t because I hide in the shadows. It was only a few council members who knew. Still…..why me?
“Because you’re the best in the region Evie,” he said. “They need the best if they even want to survive another attack.”
I shook my head. “You’re asking me to stand in front of him after three years,” I say softly. “After everything he has done to me. After everything they’ve done.”
“I’m asking you to protect this pack,” Gavin said firmly. “I’m asking you to put your pride aside for the sake of the pack. For the sake of Atlas.”
Atlas.
My heart races.
Atlas’s laughter from earlier echoes in my mind. His sticky fingers, his ice cream covered cheeks. His little pout when I promised to make it up to him tonight.
If the vampires strike us and the council abandons us….. If something happens to him because I let my pride get in
the way-
“What if Ryan tries to kill me then-
“Evie,” Gavin cuts in sharply. “Before you had no one to protect you. No one to fight for you. But now you do. Do you think I’d let you go there alone and unprotected? Ryan would have to go through a whole army to hurt you.”
My nails dig into my palms,
‘He’s right,’ Serena bristled. ‘Ryan wouldn’t dare. Not when his pack is vulnerable and not when he’s at his lowest. He’s now beneath us.’
“Besides,” Gavin takes a step forward, staring into my eyes with a pride that softened me, “You’re not the same Evie as three years ago. You’re stronger and you’re not to be messed with. I don’t think you even need protection from him anymore. I think he needs it from you,” he snorts.
Serena straightens with pride. ‘We’re not the prey anymore.’
I look away for a few seconds, just staring at the floor as if it held the answers I was seeking. And then I utter. ” If I go, you must promise me something Gavin.”
