Evie’s pov

Poisoned wine.

I shouldn’t expect anything less from the woman who birthed me. After all, she never truly loved me as a daughter.

I grab the glass anyway, swirling the rich red liquid. I could feel her eyes on me, waiting….waiting for me to take a sip.1

I don’t drink just yet. I let her speak. “Evie, it’s been so long hasn’t it?”

I raise an unimpressed brow. She brought me here for this?” Enough with the pleasantries Margaret-

“You can call me mother now Evie,” she cuts in with a smile that doesn’t reach her face. I nearly laughed but I refrain and instead remain quiet until she speaks up again.

“How have you been Evie?” she swirls the red wine in her glass but doesn’t drink. She must think I’m a fool. Without wasting another second, I set my glass down and before she could even utter another word, I am beside her in a flash.

I watch her eyes go wide with shock as my fingers wrapped around her wrist with the wine. The entire room which had already been silent grows even more so. Margaret stiffened beneath my grip, her eyes widening as they snapped to mine to see how cold I regarded her.

“What are you doing?” she hissed, trying to pull her hand free from my grasp but I didn’t let her, didn’t even loosen my hold. Instead, I tilted my head slightly as I study her. I really study her for the first time in years.

This woman. My mother. The one who pretended I never existed. The one who watched me suffer and said nothing. The one who contributed to that suffering. Was now trying to poison me.

A humorless smile curves on my lips as I stare at her with hard eyes. “You tell me, Margaret” I said softly as I tilt my head.” What are you doing?” I stressed on the word you.

Her brows furrowed, confusion flickering across her face but beneath it, something else was hidden but I could

see it. Fear.

“Such a lovely wine,” I continued, my voice calm. “Don’t you think?” I taunt as I lifted her wrist slightly, my eyes narrowing in on her face.

“Drink,” I ordered her, making the glass touch her lip slightly. Her breath hitched, eyes widening. “I don’t know what game you’re playing at Evie-”

“Drink it,” I repeated, my tone a lot sharper this time.

The air in the room shifts and Margaret swallowed hard. She looks around the room nervously before painting an angry look on her face. “I’m your mother,” she snapped, trying to regain control. “You don’t get to order me.”

My smile widened but it lacked any warmth.” What’s the matter Margaret?” I agreed quietly. “You scared to drink the same poison you tried to feed me?”

My grip tightened on her wrist just enough to make her wince. “Coward,” I leaned in slightly, my voice dropping to a whisper. “Still the same coward who would do Kimberly’s dirty laundry.”

Her pulse jumped beneath my fingers and she tries to jerk her hand away again but I held her firmly, tilting the glass closer to her lips. “I don’t know what you’re talking about Evie,” she denies like the liar she is. She shifts

her head away.

“Then why won’t you drink it?” I asked. Margaret’s face paled and she looked like a damn ghost in this moment.

“I-there’s nothing wrong with the wine,” she said quickly, her eyes refusing to look at me. She wasn’t that good at hiding her true intentions. “It’s not poisoned.”

I raised a brow, unconvinced.

‘There’s poison in there,’ Serena warns me. ‘ Not enough to kill us but they don’t know that. They think it can.’

“It’s not?” I tilted the glass slightly, watching the deep red liquid swirl dangerously close to her lips as my other hand grab her face to prevent her from moving away. “Then prove it.”

She goes silent and that was enough of an answer. I snorted. “Funny,” I said lightly. “You think you can outsmart a head warrior.”

Margaret’s breathing quickens. “Evie-” she started but I cut her off.

“Poison is such a coward’s weapon Margaret,” I continued, my voice swirling with ice. “Sneaky and a child’s play. You’d think Kimberly would have you come up with something a little more…” I smirked. ” Clever.”

Margaret froze but her gaze flickers behind me and suddenly she composes herself.

‘Kimberly is here,’ Serena notifies me.’ She’s listening.’

“Careful,” Margaret snapped angrily. “You’re making dangerous accusations against the luna of this pack and the luna’s mother.”

I laughed softly, brow arching into a taunt. “Am I? Or is it the truth?” I push the glass closer to her lips again and she flinches slightly. “If I am lying, why don’t you just drink the wine?”

Margaret’s entire body went rigid with tension. “No.”

My eyes stayed locked on hers, narrowing on her pale face. “You tried to poison me,” I said dryly. It wasn’t a question but a statement.

Her lips parted but no words came out. For the first time in my life, Margaret who always had a response for me… now had nothing to say.

No apology. No reason on why she would do Kimberly’s bidding. No reason on why she wanted me dead so badly.

And somehow…that kind of hurt more than anything. A flicker of something stabbed inside my chest but I shoved it down quickly. I would never feel this kind of pain ever again. No more weakness.

Not anymore.

“Why?” I asked, my voice growing a bit softer now as I search for answers. For years I’ve wondered why she hated me so much but she could never tell me why. “What did I ever do to deserve this treatment?”
