Evie’s pov

I don’t bother looking up to see who was there; I could sense them both. I knew they were coming. “What the hell is going on here!?” He blasts in the air. I glance at him from the corner of my eye and spot him instantly.

Ryan stood in the doorway, chest heaving slightly, showing that he’d rushed here. His eyes scan the destruction in the kitchen, the shattered glass, the overturned table, Margaret looking like a deer caught in headlights and Hannah looking unsure of what to do.

And then they landed on me and on my hand wrapped around Kimberly’s throat. His Luna’s throat.

Would he attack me? Would he defend his luna?

For a split second I thought he would as something dark flickered across his face. But then I realized it wasn’t fury but something else.

Gavin stepped in right behind him, his presence instantly filling the room, his sharp gaze taking in every detail just like Ryan did. But unlike Ryan, he didn’t look surprised or worried. Instead he looked…impressed.

“Evie,” Gavin’s voice was calm, steady but there was an underlying soft warning there that told me I should release Kimberly before things escalated. “Are you okay?”

I nod stiffly and watch Ryan take a step forward. “What the hell is going on?” he repeated again, this time sounding even more impatient.

Kimberly let out a strained broken cry as she starts to now claw weakly at my wrist. “R-Ryan-please-”

My grip didn’t tighten around her neck but it doesn’t loosen either. “Why don’t you ask your Luna,” I said dryly.

Ryan’s jaw clenched at the word and his gaze flicked to Kimberly, then to the shattered glass on the floor. He eyed the dark stain of wine dancing on the tiles and his nostrils flared slightly. He had picked up on the bitter scent. I could see it in his expression that he knew.

He knew it was poison.

He eyed my hand around his mate’s neck. ” Release her.”

I glance at Gavin and he nods, silently telling me to release Kimberly. Ryan notices the brief exchange between us and his jaw tightens. He looks irritated that I only listen to my alpha and not him.

I release Kimberly and move away from her. She dramatically coughs and wheezes in air. ” Baby she tried to kill me! She attacked me for no reason-

“My head warrior won’t attack you for no reason,” Gavin cuts in sharply and eyes the wine on the floor. “Why does the wine strongly smell of poison? Strong enough to kill a wolf?”

Silence slams into the room after Gavin’s question and Kimberly’s coughing stutters to a stop. Did she really think that alphas wouldn’t be able to pick up on the scent of poison?

Ryan’s gaze snapped back to the spilled wine then slowly lifted to Kimberly. His eyes didn’t regard her softly, nor protectively. Instead, he regarded her coldly.

“Answer him,” Ryan said with ice in his tone. No tinge of warmth or concern. Only commanded her like an alpha would.

Kimberly blinked in shock and was clearly thrown off by his tone. “I-I don’t know what he’s talking about,” she

said quickly, shaking her head as she fixes herself up with Hannah’s help. “We have no idea who brought the wine

Stop with the lies,” Gavin cuts in sharply. Kimberly’s gaze snaps to him furiously, the anger bleeding out of her words. “You don’t get to speak on this matter-”

“I do,” Gavin said flatly. “When my head warrior is involved.”

That shut her up again and she looked over at Ryan for help but instead of helping her, he walked towards the shattered glass and crouched just slightly. His fingers hovered over the dark stain but didn’t touch.

He then lifts his gaze back to Kimberly and they darken. “Why?” was the word that spat out of his lips.” Why would you try to poison her?”

Kimberly’s lips parted slightly to say something but nothing came out. For once, she had no immediate lie ready. Her face has paled and her eyes skittishly looked around the room for a way out.

Ryan straightened slowly, his full height suddenly feeling more powerful in the room. Even Serena stirs but for a completely different reason.

‘Ooo, he’s so hot,’ She sighs in my head and I groan.

‘Shut up and read the room,’ I snapped at her.

‘Fine,’ she pouts. ‘You’re no fun.’

“Look at me,” he ordered Kimberly but she hesitated. That alone seemed to enrage Ryan further. “Now!”

She flinched, actually flinched and then anxiously, her eyes lifted to his. But before she could speak, her dear mother Margaret comes staggering forward. “I- it was me. I put the poison in the wine. Kim-berly had nothing to do with it.”

Ryan cast his attention to her and his brows slick up as if he didn’t believe her. ” Do you know what the punishment for that would be, Beta Margaret?” he asked her coldly.

Margaret’s lips trembled and her eyes mist with fear but she didn’t back down. “I do,” she said, her voice shaking despite her attempt to sound firm and sure. “And I’ll accept it.”

I wasn’t surprised she’d rather get punished and protect Kimberly instead of telling the truth. Ryan doesn’t respond yet, just eyes her like he was ashamed they were part of his pack.

“You expect me to believe,” he said slowly. “That you acted alone?”

Margaret swallowed hard, eyes flickering away from her alpha. “Yes.”

The lie hung thick in the air. A lie to her alpha. Even Hannah shifted uncomfortably, her gaze flicking toward Kimberly before quickly dropping to the floor. Ryan notices and brought his attention back to Kimberly, who looks a bit panicked.
