Evie’s pov
+30 Bonus
The words hang in the air like suffocating smoke. I held my breath and stared at the back of Gavin’s head, glaring, The last thing I want is to remember the past and why I should hate Ryan with everything in me.
This was not Gavin’s story to tell.
“Gavin,” I hissed in warning. He stiffens, finally registering what he had let slip out.
‘Sorry,’ he mind links me. ‘I lost control for a bit.’
Ryan’s eyes flicker between us both, confusion swimming in his eyes. “What do you mean by that?” his eyes stop on my figure, brows pinching.
I step forward, keeping myself composed as I utter dryly.” He means nothing by it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must return to the training grounds to train your warriors.” I lift my chin and give him that cold stare that tells him to not question me.
But of course it’s Ryan and he questions everything. “No it doesn’t sound like nothing, Evie. What are you not telling me?” he steps forward but Gavin shifts closer to me protectively. Ryan stops and seethes silently.” You act like I will hurt her,” he snarls at Gavin.
Gavin doesn’t flinch. “History tends to repeat itself,” he replies coldly. My jaw pops as I grind my teeth. I had to stop them before Gavin took it upon himself to reveal my past with Ryan. I didn’t want to revisit memory lane.
“Enough,” I hissed, stepping forward and placing a hand against Gavin’s arm. My grip was not gentle at all but not too harsh. It was just enough to make a point.
Gavin glances at me and hesitation flickers across his face. With a sharp exhale, he takes a step back reluctantly.
Ryan’s eyes drop to where my hand touched Gavin and something dark and possessive flashes in his gaze before it hardens with anger. I disregard the look and ignore the way it makes my body tingle.
“I said it was nothing,” I repeat, my tone sharper now as I face Ryan fully. “And I don’t repeat myself alpha Ryan. Now, if you’ll excuse me,” I turn to leave the kitchen, brushing the blood that trickled from the gash Kimberly
gave me.
That bitch was lucky I hadn’t ripped her throat out then.
Gavin is following after me out the door when Ryan’s voice stops me. “You’re my mate,” he suddenly utters behind me and I freeze, my heart skipping a beat.
My heart betrays me. One traitorous beat that I feared he heard.
You’re my mate…..
Serena stupidly surged forward as though she had been waiting to hear those words from him for the longest. Had she forgotten?
‘Stop it,’ I told her icily as she practically wags her damn tail.
‘Have you forgotten what he had done? What he said to me?’ I snapped. She quiets down a little but I can still sense her happiness and I’m embarrassed about it.
Behind me I can hear Ryan take a step forward. “My wolf recognized you today. He called you his mate,” Ryan continues and Serena stirs even more.

I bit the inside of my cheek, my gaze casting down. “We were mates,” he states and not questions. “And that’s why you loathe me the way you do.”
Silence settled over us and Gavin stepped into my mind. ‘Say the word and I’ll make him stop talking’
‘No,’ I replied. ‘I can take care of myself.’
“Did I reject you Evie?” His question made my heart thud painfully as the memories pushed inside my head.
Don’t go back there Evie. Don’t remember. Don’t feel the pain you once felt. You’re no longer weak. You’re no longer that Evie.
“Evie-
He starts to seek my attention, my answers but instead he gets the coldest of replies I could muster. “Yes,” I barely glanced over my shoulder to look at him and see how stunned he looked by my reply. I continued. “I was your mate. Yes you rejected me. But that’s in the past now Ryan. I don’t want to revisit the past. Please,” I looked away from him and cast my eyes ahead of me while I straightened my spine. “Leave it there.”
My voice comes out a lot quieter than I intended it to be. But I was just tired. Tired of the memories clawing at my brain. Tired of the bond pulling at something I had long buried.
“Evie…” Ryan’s voice is different now, softer, pained. Like my words pained him.
“But why?” He whispered, seeming to not care that for an alpha, in that moment he sounded weak. “Why would I reject you?”
