Ryan’s pov

I went still the second his words registered in my head. What did he mean by they were already here? I just got off the phone with one of them….

Unless they had already been here and they were only testing me…..

“What do you mean by that, Brett?” My jaw strained as I glared at him. He bowed his head low, eyes not meeting mine.

“They just arrived about two minutes ago Alpha-

I stopped his words when I gripped around his neck. My hold lethal and unmoving. “Then why didn’t you fucking tell me?!” I snarled loudly, my grip tightening around his neck.

He wheezed, eyes widening in fear. “I am sorry, Alpha. The leader on the phone wanted to speak to you firstly-

I snarl, Apex stirring angrily inside me as my claws push out. I could rip his throat clean out right now. Make him

bleed on the floors. But I won’t.

“I am your alpha,” I roar, my nails scrapping his flesh and drawing out the faint trail of crimson. Copper taints the air and Brett looked at me pleadingly. “Everything that happens here, you notify me!” I throw him back and he hits the wall, hard.

He groans, dropping to his ass. “It won’t happen again alpha,” he wheezed. His face was red from the lack of oxygen he had when my fingers were wrapped around his neck.

I stared down at him in disappointment, chest rising and falling hard with fury as the scent of his blood still lingered in the air.

Apex stirred restlessly beneath my skin, clearly unsatisfied with how we handled him. ‘He failed us.’ He growled.’ He deserves to have a limb torn off.’

‘Then we’d be giving the council exactly what they want. They want to see me lose control as I did earlier out in the field with Gavin.’ I gritted out. This was well thought out.

“Don’t let it happen again,” I said coldly to Brett. “And find out who notified the council of Gavin and my fight.”

Brett nodded quickly and pushed himself up despite the clear tremor in his limbs. “Yes, Alpha.”

My eyes narrowed. “Don’t disappoint me, Brett.” I warned him and his face paled. He gives me a quick nod, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallows.

I had set fear into him. Good. Maybe then he’d start working better.

With one last glare towards him, I start to walk down the corridor. I wouldn’t be able to see Evie before I leave but I hope that when I come back, she’ll be there to listen to me

‘She has to,’ Apex moaned as if the thought of Evie not believing us was painful. And honestly…. it was.

The council members were already in the pack house, standing just before the foyer with Alpha Gavin and…Evie. The second my eyes fall upon her, my heart warms and Apex grows giddy like a little puppy.

“Evie,” I sighed, ignoring the council members as a bright smile started to form on my face. Her scent warms me instantly.

But then the smile gets replaced by a sad frown when her pretty eyes shift to mine and is filled with so much ice that it sends a sharp dagger of chill straight to my heart.

“Alpha Ryan.” She said curtly and coldly.

My steps slowed and the warmth that had flared in my chest at the sight of her cooled just as quickly under the weight of that look in her eyes.

So cold. Her voice was so cold and detached. So distant. Like I was nothing to her. And that fucking hurt.

She had every right to feel that way but that doesn’t mean it hurt any less.

Apex whined softly, pacing. ‘Go to her. Make it right.’

I ignore him. Ignore the way my chest feels as it tightened painfully. I ignore the instinct inside me that screams at me to go to her. To close the distance between us, to grab her and pull her close.

To make her listen to me. To make her love me again.

But I won’t listen to that instinct. Not in front of them.

My gaze flickered to Gavin standing just beside her. He was way too close for my liking. He stood protectively, as if he was still protecting her from me.

I swallowed the growl in my throat that threatened to come out.

I had to get my emotions in control. I can’t risk losing control here, not in front of the council men.

“Alpha Ryan,” the council man’s voice cut through the thick tension in the room.

My head turned slowly toward him and the softness that had barely touched my features vanished completely. ” What is the matter?” I said flatly.
