FREYA POV
I woke up feeling off, I’m not sure why but everything seemed fine so I tried to shake it off.
Jessi came to hang out with me and the kids since Levi went on the hunt too, my mom showed up
a little later.
“Has anyone heard from the guys?” I asked.
They both shook their heads, “I’m sure they’re having a great time, maybe they got lucky and got
the bear.” My mom said.
Maybe she’s right. Usually Colt would link me and let me know if he got a kill, but maybe with the
other guys all out there he’s distracted.
I just wish I knew why I felt so weird about this. I just have this horrible feeling that something bad
is going on.
A little time passed before Jessi got linked.
*Josh was attacked, he’s not doing well, your dad is trying to heal what he can but they’re bringing
him through and taking him to the city.” She said, tears forming in her eyes.
We’ve become a family with this pack and anytime something happens it feels personal.
“Where are they? I’ll head straight to them to help. said as I stood up.
“He says to head toward where you saw the bear.” She answered.
I rushed out the door and shifted to run to them. I was there quickly. They had him on a board
carrying him, blood dripping down the sides of the board. I stood opposite of my dad on the side
of Josh and immediately began combining our healing.
It’s minor healing from what we’ve come to understand so it’s supposed to be for smaller injuries, nothing like this. These gashes and bite marks are brutal. However, if there’s even the smallest
chance we can help with something we’re going to
Both of us accompanied him down the mountain to the car. Sasha told us to stay behind, we’ve done what we can and now we must let the hospital take over.
We stood and watched them drive away, I almost forgot that Colt was there until he put his arm around me.
Thank you both, hopefully you helped him at least make it to the hospital.” Colt said, feeling very guilty.
“It’s not your fault Colt, that bear almost seemed like he was hunting us.” My dad said to him. “I’ve

never seen an animal act like that, if I didn’t know better I’d say he was pretending to be a tree or trying to blend in until he knew we’d be able to see him.”
“That’s not usual animal behavior, well except for us I guess.” I said, turning to head back.
“It just kept attacking him, we were all stabbing and shooting it. Hell I was punching it in the face, kicking at it, but it just wanted Josh.” Colt said looking very distraught by the whole thing.
I can’t say I’ve seen a bear attack before, maybe it is normal for a bear but the way they talk about it, it almost seems like the bear was operating with almost man like intelligence. That intrigued
I’ve never even seen a bear before our hunt. Bear is one of the few things that we were taught to
avoid growing up. Colt said that Big Sky used to hunt them, but he hasn’t seen one since he was
young.
Seems weird that one would be around here suddenly, especially with this winter and he was big
so he wasn’t a young thing.
By the time we got back to the pack everyone has been informed. We were instantly met with Josh’s mate and mother. Both were in tears, his mate desperately clinging to her belly. I hadn’t been aware they had conceived. Josh is young, he found his mate in the pack when he first got his wolf, but they waited to marry until they turned 18. They’ve only been married maybe a year now.
The men who took Josh will stay until there’s word on his condition. Then they’ll come back and swap out for another smaller group and bring us the updates.
“Are we cursed, Luna?” Josh’s mate asked me.
I looked at her with concern, “why would we be cursed?” I asked.
“We haven’t sent anyone down that mountain to the city hospital in well over a decade. Now we’ve done it a couple of times in less than two years.” She answered.
I knew it was a long time since they had used or even needed modern medicines, but that seems discouraging to me that it’s only been happening since I arrived.
“No, I surely don’t believe we’re cursed, I think we’ve just pulled from the bad luck pile a few times. recently.” I said, hoping she isn’t seeing right through me.
When we got back to the pack house I was exhausted, even though it wasn’t even dinner time yet. I just wanted to get a shower in and go to bed. But, something told me that I needed to read. I went up to Colt’s office and found Eunice doing the same thing.
“What are you reading up on?” I asked as I searched for anything that might be what I’m looking
for.
“Bears, history on bears.” He said.

That sounds like something I would be wanting to know about right now too.

He read my mind, he thought a moment and handed me a book with a bear on it and said, “I
haven’t gotten to this one yet.”
I sat down in the chair next to him, not sitting in Colt’s desk. My book was in English thankfully. We
read and read all that we could, but nothing really stood out as being useful to us.
That was at least until my book mentioned shifters.
“Have you ever heard of bear shifters?” I asked him, earning myself a confused look from him.
