Freya was down in the smoke house hanging some of the meat from one of the pack’s recent kills. I probably could have waited until she was done, but I pulled Ash from the reinforcement job for a little bit so I could break the news to her. He understood completely and was happy to drop

everything so I could talk to her.

Honestly, I was not interested in telling her this at all. Her mother has been there for her more than anyone else, Misty was probably more of her best friend than Jessi sometimes. She was a very good mother to Freya and a lot of that good mothering passed down to Freya with our children. I

will always be grateful to Misty for that.

When I saw Freya working, my heart sank. I can’t believe I’m about to pull her from this task just to

break her heart. She looked back and spotted me.

Colt? She asked as she started walking over, wrapping her arms around me in a hug once she

saw me. S**t.

Hello beautiful. I was hoping that I might, uh, be able to steal you away for a bit?I asked her, my

nerves kicking in. It’s not that I think she’s going to be angry with me or anything. It’s just that I know how painful this is going to be for her. I know firsthand how the pain of your mother dying

feels.

Well, I would but we still have half a deer to hang in here. She answered.

Ash is going to take over.I answered.

Ash stepped forward from behind me and went to start getting to work instantly. Good man. She looked at me with heavy suspicion written all over her face. She knew very well that something was up. This wasn’t just stealing her away for a quick f**k or something and she knew it.

We started walking a bit, we added to our pack territory when we built the wall around it. Mostly because we wanted to have some extra space to just roam free, but also because we figured if we have situations like this where Big Sky comes along and needs refuge, we can ensure that we have enough space for everyone and build more huts if we need. Thankfully, we already have enough for the amount of people Harland brought with him.

Once we were a little way away and out of earshot of other people, it would seem the suspense

was killing her.

Okay Colt, what’s going on?She asked, continuing to walk with me.

I um, have to tell you something and frankly I don’t really know the best way to say this. So, I guess I’m just going to say it.I started, and then I had to make myself take a breath. Freya, my love, I am

so so incredibly sorry that I have to tell you this. Your mother died baby.F**k, saying it broke my

heart already.

She stopped walking, so I did the same. I looked at her and tried to judge what it was that she needed me to do right now. She looked shocked, I don’t think she’s processed this yet.

How exactly would you know if my mother had died, Colt? She asked.

Your father. He’s here. He just arrived and is in the infirmary. He’s okay, but he has a couple injuries

I told him he needed to get looked at.I answered.

She turned on her heels and headed straight for the infirmary. I walked with her; I couldn’t tell what

was going on in her head. Maybe she just needed to hear it from Harland. Maybe she just needed

to see that he was okay for herself.

Just before we arrived at the infirmary she stopped and just stood still for a minute. She finally looked up from the ground to me and asked, Do you know what happened?

I shook my head, He just said it’s bad out there.

She just stood there, messing with her fingers. She was nervous.

What do you need from me baby?I finally asked, I didn’t want to ask, but I had to. I want to be

here for her, and I know that I should already know what she needs right now but I am good at

battle and dealing with other people’s issues. I am not good at dealing with her emotions, or things

that hurt her.

She looked at me with such pain in her eyes, pain that didn’t leave her eyes. The rest of her looked

just like she was numbed, not feeling anything.

I don’t really know yet.” She answered.

I grabbed her hands in mine and looked into her eyes, Freya baby I am here, and whenever you figure out what you need me to do just tell me and I will find a way to do it.

She smiled, then let go of my hands and started walking to the infirmary door. When she walked in,

she walked back until she saw her dad. Sasha was stitching something up. She just stood there

looking at him. He hadn’t noticed that she’d walked in yet.

She watched, tears threatening her eyes. Once Sasha was done, she turned to stand as Harland was inspecting her stitch work.

Startled for a brief moment Sasha gasped and then realized it was just us, Oh Alpha, Luna. Hello. I just stitched up a nice gash your father had in his arm. He’s just fine though. She said as she stood

and moved on to the next person that needed her.

Freya just looked at her dad as he looked up at her from his seat.

Hello sweet girl.” He said, breaking the silence.

Hi daddy. She said, sounding like a girl who really just needed her dad.

The tears broke at that point. She couldn’t hold them in anymore. Something about having to

speak to him ruined her ability to keep it in.

He reached out for her, and she went and sat on his lap, he wrapped his arms around her and they

sat there for a few moments just like that.

After she was able to calm herself a little bit she pulled herself away from her dad, stood up and

fixed her clothes like they were all messed up, even though they weren’t.

She cleared her throat then began with, Daddy, Colt said that you mentioned it’s bad out there. For

the sake of everyone here we need to know just what it’s like out there so we can prepare in here for whatever it is that we need to prepare for. We’ve talked with some folks that have passed by and gotten some information, but judging by the looks of you and your men andShe trailed off for a split second as she thought about the fact that her mother is no longer with us then wrapped herself back around to her initial thought process, You guys clearly know more than we do at this

point.

Harland stood, “Yes. Let’s make our way to Colt’s office. I’ll have Luke meet us there and we can

walk you through everything we know.”

Freya went to stop him, worried that he might be moving before he’s supposed to, but Harland put his hand on her shoulder, It’s okay sweetie. She said I was fine she just wanted to stitch up my arm

so it didn’t get infected.”
