The Big Sky Alpha novel Chapter 144

  1. Next steps

COLT POV

It took a few days, but we were able to work with Harland and Luke to make a good plan to get us ready for the inevitable attack from the vamps. Luke explained a little bit about the torture they inflicted on their pack. This made me realize we might need a bunker for some people to get to if we fail at keeping our pack safe.

We have a big area by the waterfalls that is untouched and rarely used for anything, so I got a few

people working on creating an underground bunker that people can get to quickly if things are starting to look bleak.

Freya has drowned herself in training and working around the pack that I’m pretty sure she’s still

not given herself the time to process losing her mom. She’s been spending some time with the

kids, but she’s mostly just working and doing things to help out around the pack. I’ve tried to get

her to take breaks with me, just to help her mind get right. She refused each time.

So, I’ve been doing my best to be alpha and dad a bit more than usual. I think slowing down and

being with the kids makes her feel too much. I know she needs to do it, and just allow the pain to

hit her and actually grieve. I just don’t really know how to get her to do it at this point. I’m not really

interested in asking Harland for help on that either because I know he’s still processing it himself.

Alpha, the group working on the bunker have some questions. Do you want me to handle it, or do

you want to meet with them and handle it?Levi asked as he sat down on the seat across from me

at my desk.

I came here to sit and eat something because I have been forgetting to eat lately. I got so in my

head I didn’t even notice that he had walked in here.

I cleared my throat and swallowed the bite I had in my mouth that I’ve probably been chewing for

quite some time while I thought, I can handle it. I’m just going to eat this really quick. He looked

at me for a minute then nodded in understanding.

*Actually Levi, I think I have something I need more help on that only you and Jessi might be able to

do.

He looked at me with a weird look on his face, but part of me thinks he already knew what I was

going to ask of him.

Freya isn’t grieving. She’s not allowing herself to think about her mother and that’s making it so

she’s barely eating, barely sleeping, barely spending time with our kids. I’ve tried to help her, but I don’t think I’m the right person for the job.I told him.

He sat there in thought for a moment and then stood up heading toward the door, I’ll talk to Jessi

and see what we can do.

I sighed a deep sigh of relief. I am hoping they’re able to break through to her better than I could. I

think that there’s some things you just need a friend for. I’ll be here for anything she ever needs, no

matter what it is. I just don’t think she’s ready to face this with me yet. I don’t like that, but it’s okay.

I have to be okay with it for her sake. Everyone processes things differently and for her I just don’t

think I’m the one that can get to her.

After I finished eating, I went and checked on the kids, they were happy and playing. They’re learning how to do a lot more lately and watching them become little people has been the best

blessing.

Once I knew they were doing well, I headed down to the area where I have them working on a

bunker. They have questions, I need to figure out answers for them.

Alpha, it’s good to see you.Ash said as I approached. I looked around and saw that they’re mostly

underground. There’s a grouping of trees that they’re working between to dig down deep.

I nodded to Ash, I heard you have some questions

He nodded, Yes Alpha. We’re trying to figure out the best way to make this.”

He led me over to the dig site area so I could see how things are going so far. They’re quite deep. We dropped down into the hole that was already deep and wide. I could comfortably stand down here with several diggers and Ash. Looking around was getting a good idea of what this is going

to look like.

So, Alpha one of the biggest questions is how big we are wanting to go here. Are we wanting to try to fit everyone down here? Do we need to be able to store rations?Ash asked.

Okay, so I want it big enough that all the women and children can get down here, at least. They need to be able to stay warm and cool if they need. Probably just need lots of blankets. No torches but maybe some lanterns so it doesn’t get smokey in here. I would say we probably need to store some rations down here.I thought for a moment longer, I also want to have a couple other ways to get out of here. I want a tunnel of some sort to break off and lead to another way out and I don’t care if the other way out is also a tunnel leading somewhere else, but I want there to be a couple of ways to get out incase there’s some reason they can’t get out through this exit.

Ash thought a minute and looked around, I think we can do that. Another thing that’s been brought up is air. There’s been a couple of ideas to get a good circulation of air coming into here but we’re trying to figure out the best way to get air coming in and out of here with all the people in here that also isn’t going to make it so the vamps can hear our people down here.

Let me think about that and I’ll get back to you. Any other questions you guys have?I asked.

Not at the moment, Alpha. I’ll let you know if anymore come up.He answered then turned and

went back to work.
