FREYA POV

It’s been a week since Damon and his pack arrived. He’s only told Colt little bits and pieces about what happened to his pack, but he’s told him the important parts,

The blood suckers basically raped and tortured their way through the pack members, making their spouses watch. No one was prepared for them. Everyone seems so caught off guard when the

vamps attack. The element of surprise surely has been on their side. That is what we’re determined to not give them. We’re hoping that since we know they’re coming at some point, that our readiness will catch them off guard and give us the upper hand we really will need in a battle

with them.

Colt has been waking up every morning and heading straight to check in on Damon. He told me

that he’s worried about him. He hopes that nothing will happen, but he said he’s never seen Damon this way. He mentioned that Damon seems like his dad did. He thinks he will take his life. It’s a very

common thing when a wolf loses their mate.

I told Colt that it would seem he doesn’t have much to worry about, since he’s made it this long and

got them all here. Colt thinks this is the main time to worry about it though. Now that he knows his pack is safe with another Alpha he trusts, he worries that will give him the confidence to leave his

pack.

Thinking back to his dad, I guess his concern is valid. His father and his grandfather and every grandfather before have all done the same. They made sure their pack was safe, out of war or healthy and prosperous or just that they had a good Alpha trained and ready to take over. Colt told me once that every Alpha of the Big Sky pack has lost their mate and then taken their own life. It’s something he expressed to me after I died.

Honestly, it makes me wish he never knew the feeling of losing me. Now, I know that he knows what it feels like to lose me I know that he won’t be around long after I go. My only hope is that it’s when the kids are grown.

The rest of Damon’s pack has been helping out around the pack, as much as they can anyways. Most of them are still rather weak. Even Damon, with his Alpha powers, is still quite weak for an

Alpha.

Several are having some temper issues. Which we expected. When Blood Moon arrived, they had ‘some PTSD outbursts. It’s gotten better the more they’re around us. I mean, my own brother won’t talk to me still so I could only imagine how hard it has to be for strangers to get acquainted with other strangers after going through the hell they’ve gone through.

I have to say though, after hearing Colt tell me what happened to Damon’s pack, I’ve understood my dad’s state of mind a bit better when he arrived.

I gave him such a hard time when he got here because I wanted to know more about my mother’s

death. I can understand why he didn’t want to tell me, or maybe it was more that he couldn’t tell

  1. Having to relive something like what I would imagine these monsters are doing to wolf packs

isn’t something I think I would be able to do.

We’ve been dealing with a lot of extra people inside these walls. Thankfully, we have all the building

space needed for everyone so far. What we don’t have enough of is food. We’re not running out by any means, but we are looking at having to hunt a hell of a lot more than usual just to be able to

make it through the winter. I can’t imagine a rough winter with everyone we have here now. Let alone if we get another pack joining us at any point.

Between Big Sky, Blood Moon, the bears, and now Damon’s pack we’re looking at a total pack of about a thousand of us. It’s going to be quite the experience having everyone here. Right now, we’ve not gotten to experience much of Damon’s pack around for the feasts or any special events

we put on. They haven’t been around long enough, but we are putting on a feast this weekend.

O

I’ve joined the hunting pack, against Colt’s wishes.

In order to hunt we have to go outside the safety of our walls. However, we hunt in groups. Small groups, but groups nonetheless. He’s asked me several times to stay in the walls, but I can’t just stay in the walls and not help with the biggest need of our pack. I understand safety is an issue, but our pack needs this meat.

I’ve been determined every single day to get out there and get an animal. I refuse to go in without one. Thankfully, it hasn’t been difficult. I go out first thing in the morning and am home by noon with an animal field dressed and ready to be processed.

Then I get to spend the rest of the day with my kids and family. Generally, we’re off doing something for the pack. Sometimes it’s processing the meats from the day’s kills, sometimes it’s helping out in the healer’s hut, sometimes it’s helping with teaching children around the pack, and sometimes it’s just helping a pack member with something they need done.

Today, it’s helping in the kitchen getting the feast ready. Kira is young, but in this pack we teach our females at young ages to do basic cooking skills. She’s pretty comfortable with peeling potatoes, kneading dough, and boiling water. It’s always a joy to work in the kitchen with everyone. Colt is not a kitchen man. He’s more of a, well basically everything else man. So, he’s been taking Hunter with him to do whatever else he can figure out to do besides being in the kitchen.

Colt has been working on getting my dad involved in teaching Hunter Alpha things. It’s been quite nice watching my father be more involved in the kid’s lives. Before, it was my mother which is a

pretty usual thing for wolves. However, the father figures are generally the ones that work on teaching the Alpha roles, attributes, and morals to the future Alpha of the pack.

Generally speaking, it would be Colt and his father if his father were still alive. Since his father isn’t alive, and my Alpha father is living within our pack, which is very unconventional in the wolf world,

he’s decided that we need to make the most of the weird situation we’ve been put in with this

apocalypse.
