The Big Sky Alpha novel Chapter 160

160 Enlisting help

  1. Enlisting help

FREYA POV

This idea is quite brilliant. I mean, of course it is. Colt came up with it. That wonderful man of mine

never ceases to amaze me.

I headed straight for the wall. I know there are warriors in other areas of the pack grounds, but the wall is where I am guaranteed to be able to speak with larger groups of them at a time. While I walked over to the wall, I played out in my head how I would bring this up. Colt mentioned that everyone in the pack had already been asked, but he wanted me to talk to the warriors. I’m not

sure if that means they have already been spoken to about this or not.

As soon as I got to the wall I was immediately greeted like a friend. The warriors love me, Colt says that it has something to do with me being their Luna. That’s why he insists that I must be in battle

with the warriors.

“Could I get you all to take a quick break?” I asked them.

Without hesitation, they double checked their stations outside the wall and then came right to me.

“What can we do for you, Luna?” One of them asked.

I took a deep breath, suddenly a little nervous but I didn’t want them to totally see that.

“I know you’ve all either seen or been a part of one of the violent outbursts of some of those who have been recently arriving. I also am assuming you’ve already been asked for help as we try to figure out the best ways to help these people.”

I got a few head nods, a few guys also vocalized that they had been asked.

“I am here to ask again. We have plenty of women who have signed up to help us figure this out. However, we need some men to help us too.” I surveyed the group.

“Why do you need men? Scared they would hurt the women?” One of them asked.

I shook my head, “Not necessarily. We’re more concerned about the fact that sometimes men don’t like to open up to women. Some men don’t think it’s okay to be vulnerable with women like

that.”

The group seemed to understand the concern.

“What are we expected to do?” One of them asked.

I thought about it for a second, “Right now all that we know is one of our members has been helped by talking to someone about what they went through. So, we want to start off there.

However, we know that not everyone is the same when they’re suffering like this so as we move

forward, we might have other ideas that come up, or other things we are noticing are helping.

Frankly, this isn’t something any of us are exactly experts at. We’re flying blind going into this. It

might have no impact on these people at all, but it might have all the impact in the world. We’re supposed to get these people to be able to fight again if we must face the vamps. Right now, I’m

not sure if any of them would stand and fight like we would need if we fought them today.” I

responded. I didn’t want to be too harsh in the things I said but I also really need these guys to understand the situation we’re in, not only as the pack leaders, but also just as a pack.

I spoke with a handful of other groups along the wall throughout the day. There were follow-up

questions, which give me hope that at least a couple of them will help.

Just as I had finished talking with everyone at the wall, the group I was with quickly ran to a

disturbance over by the healing hut.

It was one of the guys who arrived with Damon’s group. He was clearly having a hard time; something must have set him off. It looks as if he was walking by the healing hut, maybe he bumped into a girl that was walking out. I’m not sure, I couldn’t tell. All that I could tell for sure was that he was beginning to get to a concerning point. Yelling loudly, giving off a defensive vibe like he was trying to pull himself away from the situation but wasn’t doing it fast enough for himself.

The more people gathered around him, the more visibly uncomfortable he became and the more uncomfortable he became the louder and more aggressive he would get.

I decided to start trying to clear people out, get them away from the situation.

“Clear out guys. Nothing to see here. Please go elsewhere, give this man some space.” I would say out as I pushed through groups. As the crowd began to disburse, the more he seemed to calm down. Once there were only a couple of people left, he calmed down and apologized. I could tell he felt horrible. He was clearly aware of what happened.

He noticed me, and he got upset. “I’m so sorry Luna. I didn’t… I wasn’t trying to… I’m sorry.” I could see the tears threatening to break through.

I placed my hand on his arm, very slowly and carefully. I didn’t want to cause him to feel defensive,

I wanted him to see that I wanted to help him.

“It’s okay. You’re not in trouble or anything. What’s your name?” I asked using a very calm tone in my voice. I know there were a few other guys from the wall around me, but I put my focus on this man. I tried to make it look like everything was fine, that I wasn’t in danger, and make it seem like this.man could feel safe. Not that he wasn’t safe, but I know in his mind he’s not.

“I’m Rex, Luna. From Desert Moon.” He answered. I knew he was from Damon’s pack.

“Rex. It’s nice to meet you. Have you eaten today?” I asked him.

“Um, no ma’am I haven’t.” He answered.

I walked with him over to one of the small market huts just a little behind the healing hut. By this point, we were out of ear shot of the other guys. I grabbed a fresh bread roll from one of the market huts and a drink. We sat down and started talking.

The more we talked, the more he started calming down. I could feel the weight lift from him as he

talked with me.

“Rex, have you talked with anyone about what gets you upset like what happened back there?” I

asked him.

He shook his head, “No, I’m not even sure I can talk about it. I can’t even think about it without

getting upset.”

I nodded along as he spoke. “I try not to get violent. I can tell when I get upset, you know? I just can’t seem to get myself to not get upset. I can sit there and scream at myself in my mind but it’s like my body just reacts a whole different way. It’s like it my brain and my body completely disconnect when it happens, and can’t control it.” He told me. I could feel he was opening up

more than he was already used to.

“You know, you’re not the only one Rex. We’ve actually been getting a group of people together who are willing to talk to you and others from not just Desert Moon but also Blood Moon who’ve gone through horrible experiences that have the same responses as you just described to me.” I

told him.

He shook his head, “I don’t know if that’s a great idea, Luna. That might make the upset happen more.” I could tell he felt very skeptical because of his struggles with this.
