When I woke up the next morning, Colt was already gone. He was wanting to work on getting an alpha meeting set up because there’s something really fishy about this haze.
I showered and got ready to leave the pack house when Colt came in the room and told me they think they have a plan.
Back in the days of his great great grandfather, the pack used oracles, actually it was pretty common for many packs to use them. Oracles could supposedly see glimpses of the future and the past.
There is an oracle in the town closest to here, which is about 40 miles away. I’m not sure if you can really call it a town, Colt said there’s less than 300 people that live there. It is the job of Luke and his mate to go there and seek the oracle out.
The hope is that the oracle can give some ideas as to what is going on with the haze. Packs don’t generally use oracles anymore so the fact that they all agreed that this was the route to take means that they’re concerned.
I would have said just wait out the week, but some of the Alphas are concerned the haze might not end like we’re expecting it to, like we’re used to.
The story of the haze is that the first wolves were out of control, they couldn’t contain their lustful desires to an extent that the moon goddess needed to put a stop to it. She then learned that she couldn’t destroy her creation. So, she created witches to cast a spell on the wolves to stop their desire.
However, the lust of the wolves was so powerful that the spell doesn’t work during the transition periods of the sun after the solstices in the summer and winter because of the irregular moon rays. Hence the 6 months period between the two annual hazes.
I’m not sure how much truth there is to this, I mean the first known wolf species was thousands of years ago. None of them wrote any of this down, gave us instructions on it, or anything like that and for all we know this could just be how we were created.
Since we have to wait on word from the Oracle, Colt and I decided to go to the waterfalls sol could paint my portrait of him. He still thinks I’m being silly wanting a picture of him, but I’m doing it anyways.
The waterfalls are beautiful, and they’re a fun memory for me here so far. We sat there for a few hours while I worked. The clearness of the water is magnificent. It truly makes this whole. place feel magical.
Finally, I was finished. While I packed up Colt held the painting.
“You make me look good.” he laughed.
“That’s all the goddess.” I said gesturing to him, not the painting.
I remembered when I went to go get my paint gear yesterday I saw Jasmine with Aiden, given that Aiden is dead now I wasn’t sure if it was really relevant. I figured I should mention it since I don’t know much about their relationship.
“I’m sorry to bring this up, but I think I need to.” I began while we started our walk back, hoping to be given news from the Oracle. “I saw Aiden and Jasmine together.”
He stopped and looked at me, “When was this?”
“Yesterday, after I met with my parents. I went back to the pack house to get my painting stuff. It was before he…” I didn’t want to finish saying it, Colt knew.
“That does raise some questions.” he began walking again, clearly in thought.
“Does it make you upset?” I asked, feeling maybe a little insecure.
“It makes me feel concerned.” he replied.
“So it doesn’t make you jealous?” i know he said he’d never been with the same woman twice, but he had selected her for this haze season and would have been with the same woman twice if it wasn’t for me.
He chuckled, “I harbor no feelings for her Freya.”
I felt the need to press further. I’m submitting my whole life to this man, the least he could do is give me honesty,
“Why did you select her for the second haze season then?”
He took a moment to respond, but when he did I could tell he decided to tell me the truth, because he wouldn’t have told me this as a lie.
“Before your father and I made our agreement to marry us if you hadn’t found your mate during the month, I had decided to take her as a chosen mate.” he sighed, “I never loved her or cared much for her, in fact she’s incredibly annoying, but my pack needed a Luna and my mate was clearly not among my pack.”
He continued walking and kicked some rocks and sticks along the path.
“My pack has never accepted outsiders with open arms, they’ve brought troubles to us before. So I figured choosing one in the pack would help.” he stopped and looked at me, waiting for me to say something.
“I’m assuming you were only okay with the marriage to me because I’m Big Sky?” I asked.
“Yes.” he said honestly. “I never told Jasmine I chose her, and that decision fell away when your father came to me with that offer.” he shrugged. “I didn’t know you were my mate at the time, but having the alliance of another Big Sky pack would be good for us.”
“So you’re not jealous?” I confirmed. It made me smile.
“Who she’s with holds no merit to me.” he said with a laugh. “Though it does seem odd that she’d choose Aiden. Unless she knew he was my brother. Or maybe she wanted to be Luna of his pack since she had no chance of being Luna to ours.”
When we got back to the pack house we took the painting stuff back to our room and set his portrait out to dry when Colt got a mind link to come downstairs.
We both went and were surprised to see that Luke was back, and he brought the oracle back with him.
“Alpha, this is Eunice.” he motioned to the oracle. “He has been expecting us to find him. He insisted he had to come to bring you the news.”
