FREYA POV
While a large group of our warriors were getting the newly captured prisoners ready to take to a holding area Colt kept looking at me. I really didn’t care, i felt so off about this pathetic excuse for an attack i couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d do if i were leading a human tribe into a war with a bunch of shape shifting wolves.
Every plan i came up with seemed unlikely. I didn’t even notice him walk over to me.
“Hello!” Colt said waiving his hand in front of me. It startled me, i was so deep in my own head i apparently didn’t even hear him talking to me.
“I’m sorry.” I said shaking my head slightly. “Were you saying something?”
“What’s going on Freya? You should be happy that this went off without a hitch on our part.” He was looking at me like he couldn’t understand what i was concerned with.
“I don’t know Colt, think about it.” I began, fully ready to walk him through my thought process. “You’re a human leading a tribe of other humans into a pack of strong wolf people. You’ve already lost a bunch of your warriors to this group of wolf people. Why are you going to send in a group of young people and women to basically run away and get captured. Doesn’t this seem off to you?” I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
He thought for a second then asked, “Okay then, what would be the reasoning behind it? A distraction? Am i planning something else that i want the pack focused on this group of people for?”
“That’s what I’m thinking, but i can’t really think of what it could be. They’ve got to be in the works now, but we haven’t heard anything from anyone else on watch. No one left their posts to come deal with this, did they?” I asked feeling almost like I’m grasping at straws trying to get an idea of the plan.
I plopped myself down and crossed my legs, sitting in the dirt and playing with some rocks in my hands as i looked around and thought about everything.
“Alright.” Colt said sitting next to me. “We have to think about this like we’re them.”
He cleared his throat, “What do they know about us?”
I thought a quick moment, “They think Big Sky took the land from ancestors i guess. They want the land back. They think we’re well off with plentiful meat and foods. They know we’re shape shifters.” I paused and looked at Colt. “And they think if they kill our Alpha then we’ll all stop fighting and they can take their land back.”
That has to be it. “Whatever they’re doing, it’s to get to you.”
The look on his face said it all. He knew i was right, and getting to him could very well mean getting to me and our pups.
Her mind linked Levi and Ash. “I want you two to gather a few of your warriors and head to the pack house. I think Freya is right, this wasn’t the attack.” He stood and offered his hand to help me up.
We walked to the pack house together, the walk was oddly quiet and Colt kept his head on a swivel, turning to inspect every noise he heard.
When we got to the pack house he went into his office and met with the guys. I decided to go change, being in fighting clothes with my belly getting bigger was not comfortable. It’s the middle of the night, I’m exhausted and i just need some food and comfy clothes to manage the rest of this night. I kissed him and told him I’d meet him there in a minute.
I walked to our room thinking about how the pack house smelt a little weird. I opened the door and closed it behind me. I felt a sting in my neck and my legs went limp. I realized i felt hands on me, but everything was going black. I tried hard to mind link Colt but i blacked out.
COLT POV
The walk back to the pack house was unsettling. She was right, something wasn’t right, no man in his right mind would send in a group of women and young boys to a battle like that. All they did was show up, fire arrows and throw a couple spears then they pretty much just ran away.
It wasn’t a battle. At the moment I was blinded by my hope that we had things handled. If they’re after me, that puts Freya and my babies in danger. Every crack of a twig has me anxious, a squirrel jumped a branch in a tree and i about shifted to run up there and kill it.
I don’t like this. Protecting the pack is one thing, protecting my family is another. Protecting our pack is my duty it’s my job it’s what I’m good at, protecting my wife and children should be just as easy but my emotions are all over the place. I need to get my s**t together.
Freya decided she needed to change and grab a snack then she’d meet me and the guys in my office to figure this out. Maybe with us all thinking on this we can come up with ideas to prepare for.
“Thank you for getting here quickly.” I began, “Freya brought to my attention that this attack had to be a set up, they’re doing something else. She reminded me that they think all they need to do is kill me, then the pack would just stop fighting and give up the land which means they’re after me.” I paused, it seemed like i was suddenly very ill and then it went away. I shook
I shook my head.
“What would they be doing that would require a distraction and it would involve getting to me. “I asked them.
The room was really quiet, i could tell they were all thinking.
“Alpha.” Levi said, concern in his voice. “Where’s Freya?”
I looked to the door, “She said she needed… to… change…” my thought trailed off and I realized she was alone.
Like they all thought it too, i ran to the room and they were all right on my tail. I burst through the door and looked around, she was nowhere. “Freya!” I called for her, she didn’t answer. I ran to the bathroom, she wasn’t in there. Our window was open, we never had that open. My heart sank.
“Alpha!” Levi yelled, “I smell wolfsbane.”
No. This can’t be happening. Why did i let her be alone? What the hell was i thinking?
They took her!
