The Big Sky Alpha novel Chapter 85

COLT POV

“Alpha Harland is on pack grounds; he’s coming straight here.” Levi told me. I’m assuming he got word from the guards. After Freya passed out Sasha helped me bring her back to the bed in Sasha’s hut. I haven’t left her side. I linked Levi and he came to join me. He brought Jessi with him so she could be with Freya.

This day has taken a turn I didn’t want it to. Sasha knew this was going to happen, she linked me to come here as soon as she figured out what was wrong with her.

“Where is she?” I heard Misty holler.

“She’s in here.” I yelled out.

She bust through the door to the hut like she was breaking through a locked door. She ran to Freya’s bedside pushing me out of the way. She looked horrible. She looks like she’s been crying for days.

Harland walked in a little behind her. I placed his hand on my shoulder after Misty pushed me out of the way. “Sorry, she’s been a wreck about all of this.”

“I understand.” I said to him.

He sighed, “Actually, Colt I don’t believe you do.” I shot a look over to him and then I realized, he also looks like he’s been crying. The man looks like he hasn’t been eating or sleeping for days. I only just got word to them yesterday.

“We need to go for a walk Colt. There’s things we need to discuss.” He said, not looking at me at all.

I looked over at Freya. He could sense my hesitancy. “Misty will let me know if we need to get back here.”

After a few minutes of walking in silence I couldn’t take it anymore, “You going to tell me what’s going on Harland?” I felt that this was a more personal talk than an alpha to alpha talk. I felt weird not addressing him as an alpha, I think he felt weird that I didn’t address him that way too but he didn’t say anything about it.

“The goddess came to me before you informed me of her condition. She’s informed me of some…” he paused, I could tell he was fighting back tears. “things.” Is all he said.

I stopped walking and looked at him, “Things? She told you things?” I threw my hands up,’ Harland what the hell is going on with my wife?” I asked maybe a little more harshly than I meant to. She’s my wife after all but she is also their only daughter.

“Colt, the goddess said she should have died.” He hollered out. I froze, Died?

“W-What do you mean?” I asked, afraid that I might already know the answer.

He sighed, forcing himself to tell me. “When those people poisoned her, they didn’t know what they were doing. She shouldn’t have lived through any of it. They should have killed her several times, but the goddess stopped them.” He grabbed my arm and told me that I needed to sit down to hear what he had to say.

Through the course of probably an hour he proceeded to tell me about how they gave her a more than lethal dose of bane every time they injected her. He said that the goddess needs our children to be born for some reason, she said that they’re going to do great things for our species so she has been keeping Freya alive through all of this and it’s beginning to catch up with Freya.

He said that the only reason he hasn’t come up here on his own since we’ve been home for almost two whole months since she was taken was that the goddess told him that he needed to gather special ingredients to create a medicine for her. This medicine is her only hope of surviving when the children are born.

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what to do. I just found out that I should have lost my wife almost two months ago, that our children are going to do great things for our species and that’s the only reason my wife is still with me, and that when she brings our babies into this world she is probably going to die.

What in the actual f**k am I supposed to do with that? How do I live without her? I can’t do what my father did to me, I cannot leave our babies without a parent. They have to know how absolutely amazing their mother is. They need to have the unconditional love of a parent in their lives.

“Colt?” Harland asked. I think he was expecting me to say something.

“Wh…… Harland what do I do?” I asked, barely keeping myself together.

“For right now, we just stick to the plan the goddess gave us. I will do the healing on her as much as I can, I got everything for this medicine she told me to get, and Misty and I will be here to try everything in our power to help our daughter get through this. If in the end it’s not good enough….” He paused as he let a tear escape his eye. “Well then I guess we handle that then.”

I put my face in my hands and prayed. I just prayed and begged and prayed some more and begged some more. I felt so helpless. My Freya, my love, my light, my life. What the hell am I supposed to do? Just sit here and twiddle my thumbs hoping that she lives? Am I supposed to act like all is fine in this world and I’m not about to possibly lose my wife? How the f**k am I supposed to do this?

“Misty just said Freya’s awake.” Harland told me. I jumped up instinctively feeling joy in her being awake but then I froze.

Harland just looked at me with question on his face.

“What do I do? Do I act like everything’s okay? Do I tell her? Do I not tell her? Do I act like everything is as it is? How do I act like everything is as it is? Harland, what in the hell am I supposed to do here?” I looked over at him.

“How do I walk in there and look my beautiful wife in the eyes knowing that she might not be with me for much longer?” I let a tear escape, I sat back down and I placed my face back into my hands.

“Together.” Harland answered. “I’m about to walk in there and face my only daughter, my baby girl, as we’re all dealing with the fact that we might lose her. My wife is currently in there with her right now doing it.” He walked over and patted my back.

“None of this is going to be easy, son. In fact, this is going to be the hardest time of our lives, but we have to do it.” He said.

He’s right. I stood up and began walking with him back to Sasha’s to go be with my wife for as long as I can.
