Everyone was shocked when they saw what went down.
[Whoa, what just happened just now? Did the Mermaid Queen totally lose it?]

[You didn’t watch the video? Bailey killed her daughter. She actually killed the Mermaid Princess! Seriously, Wow.]
[It’s over. Not only did she miss out on the Mermaid Crown, but she got hit with a fatal blow. Bailey really got screwed over.]
[Talk about bad luck. She finally took down an evil mermaid, and it turned out to be the Queen’s precious daughter.]
[Wait, the Mermaid Princess had midnight blue hair and tail. She was obviously one of the evil mermaids, right? Wasn’t the Queen’s quest to take out the evil mermaids? So what’s the problem?]
[If the Queen says it’s wrong, then it’s wrong. Who’s gonna argue with the Queen?]
[NPCs are so bossy. She hands out a quest, the player finishes it, and then she just kills them?]
[Dude, why bother reasoning with a non–player character? Bailey probably missed the crucial info, so she ended up targeting the Mermaid Princess. See, Leeanne didn’t even do anything this time.]
The chat channel was a total mess; everyone was talking at once, all sorts of takes flying around.
For a moment, it was pure chaos.
Just then, a game announcement popped up.
[The Mermaid Queen has lost her beloved daughter. Stricken with grief, she has called off the quest to hunt down the evil mermaids.]
[Bailey killed the Mermaid Queen’s daughter and is now considered an enemy of the mermaid race.]
Enrique, Rodger, and the others all went pale, secretly relieved they’d dodged a bullet.
‘Wait, scratch that–make it two disasters we dodged!‘ Enrique thought to himself.
They all thanked Leeanne and then made a quick exit.
No way anyone could stick around here now.
Bailey’s fate was unknown, and Callum was devastated. When he went searching for Bailey, she was nowhere to be found.
He had no clue where she might have drifted off to.
Jared, Darren, Zach, and Liam were all badly wounded. None of them dared stay underwater any longer, so

they quickly surfaced and headed back to the raft to recover.
By the Mermaid Palace, only Leeanne, Emmett, and Gideon were left.
The three of them hid behind a nearby coral reef, keeping a close eye on the palace.

The Mermaid Queen, grief–stricken, carried Mila back inside. The palace gates closed behind them, leaving only two guards standing watch.
Emmett poked his head out, then quickly pulled back. He turned to Leeanne and asked, “So, what’s the next move?”
Leeanne said, “Head back!”
Emmett protested, “No way! I know you’re planning something, and I’m not missing out. I’m in, no matter what. Drag me or kill me, I’m still joining.”
Gideon said, “I’ll help you.”
Leeanne frowned. These two just wouldn’t leave her side.
‘Even if they know a bit about my plan, do they really have to stick to me like glue?‘ she thought.
Emmett said, “Leeanne, I might not be good at much, but I’m pretty likable. If you need someone to gather intel, I’m way better at it than Gideon!”
Leeanne said, “Come on, I’m way better than him!”
‘Seriously, is there anyone worse than Gideon at this?‘ she thought. ‘Gideon can’t even string a full sentence together.’
Emmett wiggled his belly, trying to act cute. “Come on, please?”
Emmett said, “I’ve got Bob’s Boots! These mermaids are obsessed with cleanliness. If things get dicey, I just whip off my boots, and even the Queen would be knocked out!”
Leeanne said, “You’ve got a point!”
‘Emmett’s basically packing a biological weapon!‘ she thought.
Still, she couldn’t help but worry. “I’m just afraid you guys might end up in real danger.”
Emmett thumped his chest. “I’ll be fine. I can handle myself.”
Gideon said, “I’m good.”
In the end, Leeanne had them all add Maeve as a friend. That way, if anything went wrong, Maeve could call them back right away. At least they’d have a shot at staying alive.
Leeanne was dead set on getting inside the Mermaid Palace.

There were secrets hidden in there, and she knew she had to get among the mermaids if she wanted to figure can what was really going on.
Last night. Mila told her the mermaids weren’t allowed to leave the Mermaid Palace area, but they could hang ou nearby a spet players couldn’t even get to
as long as the mermaids stayed inside the palace zone, they’d never cross paths with any players.
That meant they could just pretend they were returning from outside the palace zone and head straight into the palace
And since the mermaids never left the outer zone, the palace guards weren’t strict at all–as long as you looked like a mermaid, you were good to go.
After all they were the only ones here with a mermaid on their side.
Leeanne pulled out two mermaid morphing whistles, handed one to Emmett, and said. “Just give it a gentle
blow
Emmett grabbed it with a grin, didn’t even check it, and gave it a quick toot.
Instantly, he morphed into a mermaid.
He turned into a plump mermaid, his belly so round it looked like it might pop.
He had light blue hair, a matching tail, and pale blue eyes–just like any Common mermaid.
He was wearing a white vest up top.
The vest was way too small, squeezing him so tight that his pale, round belly was on full display.
Emmett gasped, “Whoa, what the-!”
He looked down at his short, stubby tail, checked out his chubby arms, and gave his round belly a squeeze. “Did I just turn into a mermaid?”
Gideon said, “Did you even look at the whistle first?”
‘If he’d just glanced at the instructions, he wouldn’t look so dumb right now, Gideon thought.
Leeanne was a bit worried. “We’re about to sneak into the Mermaid Palace, but there’s no way the palace has a mermaid this chunky. Emmett, you can’t go in.”
Emmett protested, “There wasn’t one before, but there is now! Relax, I’ll definitely get in!”
With that, he waddled off, shaking his belly as he went.
He was trying to sway his hips, but since he didn’t have any—just a big round belly–it looked more like he was wiggling his stomach.
After a few steps, Emmett started to get the hang of moving around with his tail.
