Chapter 56

The chat channel was buzzing with activity, and it didn’t take long for the Garcia brothers messages to get drowned out
Everyone had been fed up with those two for ages. Even when they were just chopping wood, they had to yap about it in the group chat
Now that they’d finally shut up, the chat channel was back to its usual vibrant mix of voices
Leeanne had already split up from Rodger and the others. Before they parted ways, they agreed to meet back at the spot where they’d gathered before sunset.
Leeanne kept exploring
[Survival Mission Issued Rescue the Injured Monkey. There’s an injured little monkey somewhere the pears have ripened. Try to heal it. There could be a surprise in store for you!!
Leeanne just stared, lost for words.
Leeanne thought to herself. Seriously, where the heck am I supposed to find a place with ripe pears?
“This mission is way too vague
She glanced at the clock. It was already four in the afternoon. There were only two hours left before she had to leave the
island.
Is it really worth spending what little time I have searching for a monkey? Leeanne wondered.
Leeanne paused for a moment, then quickly made up her mind. She’d go for it and hunt down that monkey.
Leeanne thought, Missions like this are rare. Maybe the surprise reward will actually be pretty good.”
She stood in place, looked around, and finally asked in the Assault Squad group chat: [Did any of you spot any pear trees or monkeys while exploring the island?]
Danelle: [Wait, monkeys? And pear trees? I’m crazy about pears! Where can I find them?]
Rodger: [Did you even read what Leeanne asked Leeanne, why are you looking for pears anyway? I haven’t seen any.
William: [Nope, haven’t seen either.]
Danelle: (I only saw some orange trees. There were just a handful of wild oranges, and I have no clue who ate them.]
Leeanne suddenly had an idea. [Danelle, where did you spot those orange trees?]
Danelle paused to think. [Look at where I am now. If you head south from here, it’s about 2 miles.]
Leeanne opened up the map, checked Danelle’s location, and did some quick math. The orange trees were roughly a mile away from her.
That happened to be a part of the island she hadn’t explored yet.
Danelle had said there were only a dozen or so oranges left, which meant sorne animal had probably eaten them Monkeya loved oranges. Maybe that was where the monkeys were hanging out
She art off in that direction right away

After walking for a bit, she saw an orange tree. The branches were a mess, and there wasn’t a single orange left. Danelle must’ve gone wild on this tree, Leeanne thought.
Right nearby, there was a tall dirt mound. Leeanne climbed up and took a good look around.
From what she knew, monkeys usually made their home in dense forests.
The north was the way she’d come, the south was just rocks as far as the eye could see, but to the west and east, there were some trees visible in the distance. Those were the directions worth checking out.
‘East or west?‘ Leeanne wondered, hesitating.
She paused for a moment, picked up a pebble, and tossed it into the air. The pebble landed to the east.
‘East it is!‘ Leeanne thought, making up her mind.
She was banking on her Maximum Luck to come through for her. If anyone could pull this off, it was her.
Leeanne set off at a brisk pace toward the east.
As she made her way through, all she saw were young saplings, their branches all tangled up and wild, none of them taller than about two meters.
Every now and then, she’d spot one or two big trees.
Leeanne didn’t bother stopping to chop any down, she just kept walking, keeping an eye out as she went.
After about ten minutes, the view suddenly opened up, there were fewer trees, and large stretches of exposed rock appeared ahead.
She noticed a few bits of animal droppings.
The droppings were tiny. Most of them were on the branches.
With a flutter of wings, a few birds fluttered out from the thicket, chirping noisily as they soared into the sky.
Leeanne’s face fell.
She thought, ‘Shoot, I guessed wrong.
This place is crawling with birds. They must’ve been the ones who ate all those wild oranges.
‘So it wasn’t monkeys after all.
These droppings are bird poop too!”
These birds were total orange fanatics.
Besides, there weren’t any trees ahead. Monkeys wouldn’t hang out in a place like this.
‘I totally wasted my time, Leeanne thought, feeling a wave of frustration.
Leeanne frowned. She’d already wasted more than half an hour here, and walking back would eat up another thirty minutes.
If she tried her luck heading west, it was unknown if she’d even run into a monkey there.
She only had a short time left before she had to leave the island.

“What now? Leeanne thought.

Leeanne sighed, feeling totally out of options. At this point, all she could do was keep pushing forward. Even if it felt hopeless, she had to see this mission through, no matter what.
She was about to head off, but suddenly, a girlish yet savage voice snapped, “You bastard!”
That wasn’t Danelle, William, or Rodger. ‘Is there someone else on this island?‘ Leeanne wondered, her nerves tensing.
Leeanne instantly went on high alert, ducking down to stay hidden.
The voice snapped again, “You moron.
“You ugly mug.
“Touch me one more time, I freaking dare you!”
Leeanne was speechless. She thought, “Who talks like that? Using the most cutesy voice to spit out the nastiest insults.
‘And who is she even yelling at?”
Suddenly, a burst of chittering echoed through the air.
Leeanne paused, then realization dawned on her.
That’s monkey calls!‘ she thought.
Unable to hold back, she followed the sound, sneaking over.
She first saw a bird perched high up on a branch.
The bird was maybe 20 inches long, with most of that being just its tail.
It had a red beak and red feet, a snow–white belly, a black head and neck, and wings and tail that were a shiny dark blue.
Its tail was especially long, the upper part of the feathers faded to light blue, while the ends were white. Whenever it flicked its tail, the colors popped, seriously eye–catching.
Most striking of all were its eyes, bright red, just like a pair of rubies.
Right now, it was shouting fiercely at whatever was below, “Touch me one more time, I freaking dare you!”
Leeanne thought, ‘No way, this bird can actually talk.
That’s nuts!
[Red–billed Blue Magpie spotted!)
[Scarlet–eyed Red–billed Blue Magpie (Evolvable): Tier 2 mutant predator. Gorgeous but hot–tempered, this magpie is close to evolving. Warning. Highly dangerous. Stay away!]
‘Dangerous? Leeanne thought, her senses on high alert.
She kept her eyes locked on the red–billed blue magpic, unable to shake her confusion.
