Leeanne looked up and saw the redbilled blue magpie perched on a branch of a big tree in front of her, chattering nonstop.

It kept looping the same nasty lines, not a single nice word coming out of its beak.

Leeanne found herself amused and annoyed at the same time. Guess I was way too nice to it earlier, she thought.

She drew her bow and nocked an arrow.

The redbilled blue magpie saw her, panicked, and took off in a hurry, wings flapping as it disappeared into the distance.

Coward!Leeanne thought.

Leeanne let out a cold snort.

Her bow and arrows were awkward to carry, so Leeanne dug through her backpack, finished her water, and pulled out the rest of the strawberries, planning to polish them all off.

Leeanne had just bitten into a strawberry when the redbilled blue magpie came fluttering back.

The bird’s beak was as foulmouthed as ever, squawking, You ugly, well

But then it caught sight of the strawberry in Leeanne’s hand and just froze, wings pausing midflap as it dropped straight out of the sky.

Right before it hit the ground, it snapped back to reality, flailed its wings, and managed to pull itself up again.

Leeanne was pretty sure she saw a thin string of drool dangling from the magpie’s beak.

The magpie flapped its wings, shook off the drool, and suddenly switched to a sweet, almost coquettish tone. Youyou are such a fairy!

Leeanne couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

So this redbilled blue magpie actually knows how to say something nice for once,’ Leeanne thought to herself.

She cast a sidelong glance at the magpie and popped another strawberry into her mouth.

The magpie’s eyes glazed over, and Leeanne could swear she saw another thin string of drool hanging from its beak.

There it goes, drooling again! Leeanne thought, barely holding back a laugh.

The magpie didn’t have much of a vocabulary yet, so it just kept circling Leeanne, and all it could say was, Fairy!

It was so desperate it could barely stand it.

Leeanne chuckled and teased, You want some?

The magpie bobbed its head up and down, chirping, Eat!

Leeanne said slowly, drawing out her words, Nope. These strawberries are way too sweet for anyone with a dirty mouth, and that goes double for birds like you!

The magpie kept circling her, chirping, Not dirty!

Lecanne paused, realizing that even though this redbilled blue magpie didn’t know many words, it was picking things up fast.

She’d just reached the spot where she’d left the chicken and rabbit cages earlier. She pointed at the cages hanging from the tree and said to the magpie, Hey, go get those cages down for me!

She wanted to see if the magpie was really as smart as it seemed.

The magpie shot up into the tree, grabbed the chicken cage with its claws, and carried it down.

The chickens inside were scared out of their wits at the sight of the magpie.

Leeanne was stunned. Four hens and a rooster together weighed at least ten pounds, but the magpie managed to haul the whole cage down. That bird’s way stronger than it looks,’ she thought.

After dropping off the chicken cage, the magpie didn’t even wait for Leeanne to say a word. It shot right back up the tree and brought down the rabbit cage, too.

It flapped its wings eagerly, staring at Leeanne with big, hopeful eyes, not even blinking.

Leeanne’s eyes twinkled as she got an idea. She pointed at the chicken cage and waved the strawberry in her hand. Tell you what, if you carry this cage and follow me, I’ll give you a strawberry when we get to my destination.

The magpie instantly hooked its claws around the chicken cage and lifted it, fixing its gaze on Leeanne, clearly telling her to get moving.

Leeanne was pretty pleased with herself. She thought, Just one strawberry, and I managed to hire some muscle.

And it’s a goodlooking helper, too. Not bad at all!

If she had to carry both cages alone, it might not be tough, but it was definitely a hassle.

Leeanne grabbed the rabbit cage and headed out, leading the way.

The redbilled blue magpie tagged along, hauling the chicken cage in its claws.

It was still early, and after checking the time, Leeanne figured she’d reach the rendezvous point by about 3:30.

She was rushing along, and after just ten minutes, a chubby blackandwhite creature suddenly rolled over and wrapped itself around her leg.

It turned out that it was the panda cub.

Leeanne bent down and, with some effort, scooped up the panda cub. Hey, what’s up with you, Fluffy? Wait

She saw the cub’s eyes were full of tears and instantly got worried. What happened? Who messed with you, Fluffy?

The panda cub squirmed out of Leeanne’s arms, clumbed down her leg, whined twice, and waddled a few steps toward the bamboo grove. Then it turned back, calling for her to come along

You want me to go with you?Leeanne said, catching on

Since it was still early, Leeanne said, Alright, but you gotta be quick!

She glanced back and told the redbilled blue magpie to hang back for a bit, then headed off with the panda cub

The panda cub was in a real hurry, scrambling and rolling as fast as it could toward the bamboo grove.

It kept leading Leeanne further in, until they reached that spot with the rainbowtipped arrow bamboo.

Right next to the rainbowtipped arrow bamboo, an adult giant panda was sprawled out, looking like it was on its last legs. It was the cub’s parent.

Leeanne rushed over, heart pounding, while the panda cub kept pushing at its parent, letting out anxious little cries to her.

Leeanne took a look.

She saw a giant gash in the panda’s belly, blood everywhere, and its legs were clearly broken.

Leeanne finally got it. The cub wanted her to save its mom, but with injuries this bad, even the healing salve wouldn’t be enough.

This panda probably wouldn’t make it past the next two minutes.

Leeanne let out a heavy sigh and spoke softly to the cub. I’m sorry, Fluffy. There’s nothing I can do for you

The panda cub just kept yelping frantically, its cries full of desperation.

Feeling helpless, Leeanne decided to try anything, even if it was a long shot. She pulled out some healing salve and smeared it over the panda’s wound.

Just as she expected, the wound barely started to heal before splitting right back open.

The giant panda summoned what little strength it had left, barely managing to open its eyes. With a shaky paw, it nudged the cub toward Leeanne, letting out a few weak, sorrowful cries.

Its gaze lingered on the little cub, eyes brimming with love and heartbreak, clearly not ready to say goodbye.

But still, it used every ounce of strength it could muster to push the cub into Leeanne’s arms.

“Are you asking me to look after your little one?Leeanne asked, her voice gentle and full of emotion.

She saw the answer shining in the giant panda’s eyes.

Leeanne figured the beast that fought the giant panda must’ve been on a whole other level. Otherwise, the panda wouldn’t have ended up in such bad shape.
