Grayson
It didn’t sound like a sports car, but that still didn’t put me at ease because Maddox had several ears in his collection.
I rushed to the window as I thought he had already arrived. But when I looked outside, I shut my eyes with a sigh of relief. It was just my mother–in–law stepping out of the car. She’d been all dressed up earlier when heading to court and was still in that same outfit, but everything about it just looked like a mess, including her hair.
She approached the front door with long strides, all the elegance that had always accompanied her walk nowhere to be seen
There was no other car in sight, giving me a clear opening to leave. I didn’t even change my clothes. I was heading to one of my apartments so I knew I’d change from there.
I walked down the stairs quickly, as if every second I was going to waste would make Maddox get closer.
Tiffany and my mother–in–law were in the living room, still ranting about the events of that day when I walked past both of them quickly.
“Grayson?” my mother–in–law said, her voice, gentle, but filled with disbelief.
I paused and looked back at her. “Yes?”
“Get back here,” she demanded. “Haven’t you seen me sitting here?”
I felt like I was about to waste time, but I still approached the sofa she sat on with Tiffany, not because she had said so, but because I just wanted to see her up close.
“How could I not see you?” I said when I was close enough.
She rose to her feet quickly, her eyes now burning with fury. “Then why would you walk by like there’s a wall or something?”
“Didn’t we see each other this morning?” I nonchalantly asked.
“What’s gotten into you? Don’t you know that this is a hard time for me and I need my daughter and son–in–law by my

side?
“Well, I have to go somewhere,” I said while looking down at my watch. “It’s urgent and I’m already running late. Tiffany’s here. She’ll take care of you. It’s not like there’s much I can do for you. Anyway, sorry about what happened today.”
She chuckled like she could sense how I didn’t mean what I’d just said to her. “Everyone’s starting to show their true colors today. Your parents haven’t called me even once to check on me.”
“Why would they? It’s not like they owe you anything. I have to go. I’m wasting time here.”
She shot me a glare as she pointed at me, “You better watch your tone. Don’t forget who you’re talking to.”
Pretending to be intimidated, I said, “Who?”
As soon as I asked her that, she slapped me hard across the face and it echoed loudly. I didn’t even have time to process it as she slapped my other cheek just as hard. I must’ve been the first person to be on the receiving end of her fury that day.
“You better remember your place, Grayson Ford!” she warned me. “Don’t even think for a second that just because you’ve taken over several companies that belong to my daughter, which she transferred in your name out of the kindness of her
