Chapter 259: The Beginning of a Downfall
Chapter 259: The Beginning of a Downfall
Grayson
While a few people around the table exchanged a few confused looks, I kept staring at Mr Lawson with frown.
“I’m sorry, but what do you mean?” I asked as I forced a smile again.
“I instructed my legal team to begin the formal process of exiting my investment,” he said firmly.
I froze because for a second, I wondered if I had heard him correctly. My forced smile even faded again.
“Mr Lawson, I-I still don’t understand.”
He smiled like he was delivering some good news to me. “Effective immediately, I’m also resigning from board responsibilities and withdrawing my involvement with the company. I hope that clears things up f Mr Ford.”
I was so defeated that I glanced at the company’s legal advisor, who also looked surprised.
Despite panicking inside, I quickly composed myself by clearing my throat.
“I’m certain that everyone here finds this to be very unexpected,” I managed to say.
“It shouldn’t be.”
“It absolutely is. If this is about any disagreement we’ve had recently, I’m sure we can resolve it privately.”
He lightly shook his head while looking around the table. “It isn’t. I’ve completely lost confidence in the fut direction of the company.”
Everyone began to murmur and I heard their questions, even though they tried to keep it down.
No one was looking at Mr Lawson anymore. They were all looking at me and it was that exact reaction I di
want.
I forced a laugh and said, “Every business has disagreements and…”
I trailed off when he slid a letter across the table toward our company secretary.
That fueled conversations even more around the table as everyone began talking among themselves again.
It now looked like everyone wanted to know what was going on with him.
But without a proper explanation, he rose from his seat and said, “I wish everyone here the very best. Have a good day.”
He then nodded politely before leaving the room without another word.
I kept my eyes on him as he approached the door and my heart pounded hard as I hoped that someone was going to stop him, but everyone remained in their seats.
After he closed the door behind him, there was silence for a few seconds until one of the shareholders cleare his throat before speaking.
“I wasn’t aware Mr Lawson had concerns.”
“Neither was I,” another one added.
The third one even leaned back in his chair with a sigh. “I’d like to understand what actually changed.”
The questions just kept on coming and I wasn’t just going to sit there because I was just as lost. It was for this reason that I politely excused myself so I could talk to Mr Lawson.
The hallway stretched on for a while and I could see him getting closer to the elevator.
I quickly rushed to him while lightly calling out his name like I just wanted to have a casual conversation.
He didn’t stop, so I quickened my pace until I caught up with him.
It was only when I was right beside him t

He looked at me with a composed expression. “What is it, Mr Ford?”
I stared at him in disbelief. “How could you ask me that? I deserve an explanation.”
He sighed. “I already gave you one.”
“No, you didn’t.” I lowered my voice when I noticed some employees walking through the hallway. “Yo you lost confidence. That isn’t an explanation. You’ve just shaken the confidence of every major inves that room and they’re already asking questions.”
He nodded proudly. “As they should.”
I clenched my jaw. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
He crossed his arms. “I’ve learned things over the past several days that make me uncomfortable rem associated with this company.”
“What things?” My eyes narrowed.
“There have been a lot of unusual payments.
My heart skipped a beat, but I kept my voice steady. “Such as?”
He chuckled while shaking his head like he couldn’t believe I was still acting like I didn’t know. “There has been money moving through consulting firms that produced little or no measurable work.” Fuck. I was just about to open my mouth when he continued.
“I’ve also learned of contracts awarded to shell companies. In short, there have been so many irregularit that I just can’t stand it.”
I looked at him with surprise and it wasn’t because he was just making assumptions. He was actually tel the truth. He knew it all and it made me force a laugh.
“You’ve clearly been misinformed,” I said, hoping I could convince him.
“Have I?”
“Yes!” I said confidently.
“Then explain it all to me. I’d especially like to hear about the invoices.”
I had no way to explain anything to him, but my eyes narrowed right at that moment as I realized somethin “You seem to know quite a lot. How did all of this even start? Someone must’ve told you something.”
His expression didn’t change. “It doesn’t matter.”
“No. It matters to me.”
He sighed heavily like I was now wasting his time.
“Mr Lawson, every company has accounting issues,” I said quickly.
He scoffed. “Not like these. I’ve spent so much time investigating all this and what I’ve pointed out is just the tip of the iceberg.”
I was now getting pissed that he wasn’t telling me what I wanted to hear.
“You had no right to do all this.” My voice was firmer now.
“That’s where you’re wrong. I had every right because you were running a company I partially owned. I had a responsibility to know where my investment stood.”
He faced forward again so he could get to the elevator, but I panicked and blocked the way. “Please, if this information becomes public, there will be headlines, regulators and so many investigations. Our customers will lose trust in our company because the company’s reputation will be ruined.”
