Chapter 268

Maddox

My throat instantly went dry when he said that. Even Harper dropped her fork and knife on her plate.

What could he possibly have to tell me about my mother?

We both abandoned our plates immediately and I didn’t even change my clothes as I wanted to hear what Benjamin say sooner than later.

As I led the way to the car while holding Harper’s hand. I thought I’d call my father and uncle to inform them, but sh

me to wait.

I wasn’t one to go over the speed limit, even with my fast cars, but after what Benjamin had told me, it didn’t matter b I wanted to get there as soon as possible. She had to remind me a few times not to drive so fast until I finally listened.

It took twenty minutes to get to the building he had mentioned.

As soon as I turned off the engine in the parking lot. I unbuckled my seatbelt, stepped out quickly, slammed the door a started heading towards the direction he had mentioned.

But just a few steps later, I paused with shut eyes when I heard a car door slam behind me. I had just realized that for th time in months, I let Harper open the door when I knew I could’ve done it for her.

Asighed and turned around, holding out my hand for her. “I’m sorry, babe.”

“I understand,” she said with a small smile and held my hand. “This better not be a prank or something.”

My jaw clenched. “I hope not. If it is, someone will regret they ever did this.”

She gently squeezed my hand and that made me feel just a little calmer. I was glad/she was with me at that moment.

We stopped by an old yellow car that was parked in the corner and there was someone in the driver seat, looking like he belonged on the street. I even doubted for a second that I had come to the right person.

But my doubts were quickly cleared up when he stepped out of the car with wide eyes. His hair was unkempt, wrinkled an dirty clothes. And then there were the stained white shoes that looked like he usually stepped in piles of dirt or something.

Harper and I glanced at each other before looking back at him.

“You actually came!” He looked relieved while carrying a small bag with him in his trembling hand.

“What’s this about my mom? I hope you didn’t make me come here just for some-”

“Trust me. It’s not what you think. I won’t even ask you to pay me for what I’m about to tell you.”

That already sounded ridiculous to me “Why would I pay you?”

He ruffled his unkempt han and chuckled nervously. “Because this has been a secret for a long time! Just so we’re clear, I’m doing this because I haven’t been able to sleep peacefully for a year now Also, I haven’t been getting paid for the past eight months. Not that the money would’ve changed anything I wouldn’t even have enjoyed it. It’s like the past is catching up with me, you know? My dreams are truly terrifying and Fin so scared to go to bed these days”

I glanced at Harper, who was just as confused as I was “What does that have to do with my mother?”

“Like I said, I used to wok at the hospital. I’m so sorry about everything. Maddox Here” He held out his trembling hand to hand over the small bag to ine.

“What’s this?” I asked.

“Please just take it and then I’ll tell you. It contains all the evidence.”

I took the bag from him with a low grunt.

“Now, can you just tell me what this is about?” Not only was I getting impatient. I was also getting worried.

“Your mother had a total of five miscarriages and died shortly after the fifth, right?” he asked like it was a pop quiz or something.

My stomach dropped. “She did. Where are you going with this?”

“That was all because of Margot. I was working under her instructions.” He took a few steps back as soon as he said it an even covered his mouth with a gasp.

It took me a few seconds to process what I had just heard, so I just watched him and he even laughed like he was relieve

“I can’t believe I just said that! I actually did it! Do you know what this means for me? I might be able to sleep peacefully tonight.”

“What did you say?” I asked, my heart now pounding hard as I pulled my hand away from Harper.

He got a little serious again to reveal more information. “Your mother would still be alive if not for me and Margot. She me good money years ago to make sure that I sent your mother to the grave. Just a few months after it was done, the gui was killing me, so I left the hospital. Margot still made sure to pay me every month until 8 months ago. I was a millionai one point but gambled it all away. Now that was some dirty money.”

The contrast between the way he looked and what came out of his mouth made my blood boil.

Even when Harper caine closer and placed her hand on my back, I was still so angry.

“Are you fucking with me right now?” I asked him with a tremble in my voice.

“What? No! I’d never do that.” He pointed at the small bag he had given me. “I have all the evidence to back up what I’m telling you. Margot didn’t even know that I had such plans. I just thought if I told you the truth, I’d be able to sleep better a night.”

Benjamin wouldn’t stop talking and at one point, I just watched his mouth move until finally, I couldn’t see clearly. Tears of pain blurred my vision and my breathing became uneven.

He was still going on and on like the more he talked, the more relief he felt.

Harper gently rubbed my back without saying a single word. I needed her so badly that I just wanted to hug her tightly.

Even at that moment, Benjamin was still talking about everything he had done to my mother under Margot’s instructions. All I could think about was making both of them pay and I clenched any fists while glaring at him.

“I did try to tell your father first but couldn’t get my hands on his new number,” he said casually. “Yours was easier to find because of who you are now. Mr Aldridge, I just need you to know that I’m so-”

I shut him up with a punch to the jaw and he fell to the ground.

Harper had to rush in front of me and place her hands on my shoulders to hold me back. She was so gentle with it that the last thing I wanted was to push her away and make her feel like I didn’t need her there.

“Please don’t do anything you’ll regret!” she said as she wiped away my tears. “I know this is a lot to take in, but you’ll kill

him.”

I stared into her eyes with so much anger and right then. I sensed movement in my peripheral vision.

When I looked over. Benjamin was already running for his life as fast as his feet could carry him.

I gently pushed Harper’s hands off the sides of my face and went after him immediately because I didn’t want him to ge away. It didn’t matter that he had given me all the evidence.
