Six months after I started attending Northgate Graduate School of Business, I had only been to the Beauregard Estate three times just to avoid Veronica.
But that day, my father insisted that I come over for lunch so we’d all celebrate the fact that I came out top of the class.
We had just finished having dessert that afternoon when I brought Dean to the foyer so I’d have a private chat with him
The others didn’t even seem to pay much attention to the two of us as they were glued to the TV in the living room. They were watching the news about Margot after she had been sentenced to life in prison without parole a week ago. There were clips of her being very dramatic about it like it wasn’t fair.
“It’s been a week since the verdict, but the press just won’t let it go,” Dean said. “I wouldn’t either.”
I should’ve said something in response to that, but I just crossed my arms with narrowed eyes while staring at him.
“What?” He shrugged.
“You know very well that’s not why I pulled you to the side. We’ve been talking about Margot for a whole week. You know why we’re here. You said your girlfriend would join us for lunch, so where is she? Because lunch ended a few minutes ago.”
He chuckled. “Is that your way of saying you think I’m lying about it? She’s definitely coming. She was just held up
“Hmm, of course that’s what happened,” I said dramatically. “I hope it’s soon because I need to get to the office here in Melbourne a few hours from now.”
“Damn, aren’t you taking this too seriously? Shouldn’t you just relax today?”
“Nope. I’m actually leaving with Uncle Hank. He’s the one who suggested it because today is important.
He gave a nod of approval. “I’m really proud of you and how you’ve been able to adjust.”
“it’s thanks to all of you being there for me.”
“Well, not all of us.” His smile faded when he looked over at his mother in the living room. I would have hoped that my mom would’ve accepted you by now, but it’s not yet happening. Please just give her a bit more time
I chuckled softly. “Don’t worry about that. I already know what I have to do
He tilted his head with curiosity. “What’s that?”
I was still looking over at Veronica when she got up to pick up the call.
“That’s for me to know,” I said confidently
He kept pushing for answers, but I didn’t want to tell him any thing except for han to wat
That call must have been very private because after she walked past Dean and I’m the foyer she stepped into the long hallway
Lexcused myself just in time so I could follow her
The last thing I wanted was for her to think I was eavesdropping so I made sure there was enough distance before following
her.

My lips curved into a smile because I was so relieved. “Of course.”
She also flashed me a small smile for the first time and it was genuine. “Then let’s go.”

I stood several feet away while she faced the other side and I just waited. I had already practiced my speech and only hoped it was going to be enough. I smiled to myself because I was taking Maddox’s advice.
While responding to the person on the other end of the line, she turned around and instantly stopped talking as she gave me a blank stare. It took her a few seconds to resume talking again after she looked away. I already knew that what I was about to do wasn’t going to be easy, but it needed to happen. I was the only one who could make it happen.
The moment she finished with her call, she started approaching me because she needed to get past me to get back to the living room. She wasn’t even looking at me as she got closer. The walls seem to get more of her attention.
She raised her head a little higher and rolled her hands without even looking at me just as she walked past he and I wasny even offended anymore.
“Wait,” I say, as I quickly placed my hand on her wrist.
She stopped in her tracks and gave me the side eye as she pulled her wrist away.
“What is it?”
“Can you please just give me a minute?”
“Ugh! I don’t have time to waste. But I’m sure everyone else does, so why don’t you ask them instead?”
And with that, she continued moving along the hallway.
