Sable POV
That was my very first kiss. My brain stopped functioning , when he kissed me. I don’t have any reference point to compare it too, but I can’t imagine that it gets any better than Jaxon’s kiss. I’m still reeling that he kissed me. It was unprompted and it was in a romantic setting in the forest. I’m not a girlie girl, but I felt like I could have melted in his arms.
We walk back hand in hand and I am trying not to show how giddy I am that he is actually acting like a mate. “You were in impressive back there.” He says to me.
My cheeks redden. Goddess, get a grip Sable. “Thanks.” I say and I sound shy.
“Just out of curiosity, why did you want to become a warrior?” He asked me.
“I’ve always been quick and strong. It seemed like the most fitting path for me.”
“Were your parents fighters?”
“No. My mother was a teacher and my father worked as a mechanic. He used to fix the farm equipment at Dark Flame.”
“I see. Do you mind me asking what happened to them?”
“My mom passed away unexpectedly, two months after I turned eighteen, and my dad died three months later from a broken heart.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. It sounds like they really loved each other.” He says.
“They did. I miss them a lot. We did everything together. I was actually looking around and I see the fall is coming soon. We use to sit around a bon fire in front of our home and drink hot apple cider and talk and tell jokes. I miss those times.” I said, feeling nostalgic.
“How old are you now?”
“I’m twenty-three, how long have you been Alpha?” I said.
“Over five years. Not quite six. Why didn’t you take a mate?” He asked me.
“My parents instilled the importance of the mate bond and the Moon Goddess will. I saw how in love they were. It looked like the most perfect love story. I would never have been able to settle for anything less. So I waited for you. Who knew you would be in a battle where I was fighting.” I said chuckling.
He looked deep in thought. Did I say something wrong?
“Tell me about your family.” I said, hoping to change the subject and lighten his mood again. We were having an actual conversation and I would hate for it to stop.
‘My folks are from a pack in the Western region. I’m the second born Alpha son. My brother took over as Alpha of my home pack when he was eighteen. It was rightfully his spot to claim and I am very happy for him. I have a younger sister as well. She is mated to the beta there.”
“How did you end up here, then?” I ask. Now I’m curious.
“The previous Alpha was removed from his position for embezzling pack funds. The elder’s where in search of an Alpha. I applied and they saw my background and saw that I was an Alpha by blood. They gave me the position and I have been Alpha here since then.”
I think Jaxon may have gotten offended, because he looks at me with one eyebrow up. “Matt, I’m going to take your Luna to her room and then I will show her around the pack house. Do you have anything pressing?”
Matt’s lips twitched at Jaxon calling me Luna, too. “Nothing that can’t wait, Alpha. I think Luna will like the pack house tour. Let me know if you need anything.”
I narrow my eyes at the both of them and shake my head. Jaxon smiles and I thought my heart stopped. Man, he is gorgeous. We make our way to the Alpha floor. Jaxon takes me down one end of the hall and opens the door.
The room is not very big, but it’s bigger than the one I had in the cottage. The bed is queen size and there looks like there is an on-suite bathroom. It’s a nice room. I look back at him, “Where is your room?” I ask.
“Oh, I’m on the other end of the hall.” He says casually. Wait, he literally put us on opposite ends of the floor? I thought it was weird we were not sharing a room, but we aren’t even beside each other? I’m I a nuisance for him?
I look down and purse my lips together. “Okay. Thank you for my room. I promise to stay out of your way.” I said as I put my bag on the bed.
After he takes me through the different floors and shows me the dining hall and the rec room, media room, library and conference rooms, he takes me to his office. It's large and there is a white oak desk sitting in the middle with windows to the side of the room. It gets a lot of natural light and the view is of the forest behind the pack house, where we came from earlier. There is a sofa under the windows and two guest chairs in front of his desk. There are bookshelves lined from behind his desk to the other side wall and it is also filled with books and binders.
I look at him at he sits behind his desk. He is looking at me, all business. It’s another look on him that makes him look hot.
“I thought we could call Crane and Darius, if you are not too tired.” He said.
My chest expanded a little. He remembered. I smiled softly, “Sure, let’s go call them.”
