Jaxon POV
I’m sitting at my desk looking at her. She really is beautiful. Her eyes especially. They look like honey when the light touches them at the right angle. When I kissed her in the woods, I saw her eyes up close. She looked shocked, but that honey color was there and green is there but more of a secondary color to the honey. It gives her an exotic look and it’s captivating.
Her eyes light up when I mention calling Crane and Darius. I’m rewarded with a soft smile. I’m not sure what it is, but some of the tightness in my chest dissolves when I see that smile. Again, she is making me feel foreign things in my chest that I can’t describe.
She sits innocently on the other side of my desk while I call Crane first. I will explain the situation to him and then ask to three-way call, so we can have some diplomacy when we call Alpha Darius. As the phone rings, I take note that Sable is sitting nervously, fidgeting with her hands. This woman just killed rogues in the woods and now she is sitting in my office like a nervous teenager. What a contrast I think to myself amused.
“This is Elder Crane.”
“Elder Crane, this is Alpha Jaxon. I’m here with Sable.” I tell him.
“Ah! Ms. Embers, congratulations on finding your mate. Alpha Jaxon called me a few days ago to inform me he found you. How are you recovering my dear?”
Sable seems shocked that I spoke to Crane about her. The look she is giving me is pure surprise, laced with maybe doubt. I’m not sure, but she responds to him, “Crane! I am good. Completely recovered and learning my way around Winter Moon with Alpha Jaxon, of course.”
“Alpha Jaxon? Such formalities, Ms. Embers. You are mates, are you not?” Crane says and I cringe inwardly. He’s right, she sounds formal and not personal, like a mate would be. I feel my face warm up and mute the phone.
“Sable, he’s right, we are mates, just call me Jaxon, okay?” I say and again I’m rewarded with another excited look in her eyes and a soft smile. I can feel my chest expand more. If she’s happy, then she won’t leave and that gives me a sense of relief I didn't realize I needed.
“Sorry, Crane! You’re right. Jaxon tells me to drop the formalities, but I’m still adjusting to the whole mate thing.” She said laughing and covering my clear oversight.
“Right, well that’s good to hear. So, to what do I owe the pleasure of your call today, Alpha Jaxon?” He asks.
“Request granted. Let’s give him a call.” Crane agrees.
“One moment.” I put him on hold and dial Alpha Darius’ number before looping in Crane again. The phone rings twice and a very angry Alpha Darius answers the phone.
“You fucking bastard! You killed my mate!” He snarls.
I look immediately at Sable and her mouth is open and she looks at me with her eyes wide.
She lied. She is his chosen mate.
