Chapter 22 A Sparrow’ll Never Become A Phoenix

There was genuine apology in Anna’s words, but also an undeniable bias toward Elina. Still, for reasons she couldn’t quite explain, Anna felt that the woman standing just half a step away from her seemed impossibly distant.

She had always had this feeling about Elina. Somehow, it had never made sense to her that someone like Elina would willingly marry Jack. Anna had always believed there must have been some hidden reason, something Elina could never speak of. Otherwise, how could someone like her be content to live quietly in a family and settle for being a good, loving wife?

Now, standing so close to her, Anna’s instincts only grew stronger.

Elina looked at her, and for the first time, a faint smile tugged at her lips. “Ms. Anna, you’re too kind. I believe that no matter who was on that operating table, any doctor would have made the same professional judgment to save a patient’s life. As for today’s situation,” she paused, glancing back at Luxe Haven with little care, “I won’t retaliate against anyone just because you stood up for me, but neither will I protect someone who made a mistake just because of our relationship.”

As her voice fell, it felt like the dark clouds hanging over Anna’s head suddenly cleared. Elina’s words made everything click for her.

A flush of shame crept onto Anna’s face. “I’m sorry, Dr. Ford. I was being too narrow-minded, and I nsulted your character.”

It’s not as serious as you’re making it out to be,” Elina said, her smile deepening a little. “But Ms. Anna, I’m ucky to have made a friend like you.”

Leaving all the messy business behind, Anna arranged for her driver to take Elina home while she turned and headed back into Luxe Haven.

Inside, the Ford family was caught in a state of panic after hearing the police say that Elowyn might end ip in jail.

How could this happen? One thing after another! What on earth is Lina thinking, trying to send her own sister to jail?” Rowena placed all the blame squarely on Elina’s shoulders.

Jack remained silent, so Rowena nudged Ronald, signaling for him to say something.

‘Exactly! Lina’s really gotten out of hand. Doesn’t she care at all that Elowyn might actually end up behind bars? I shouldn’t have been so polite to her earlier!”

‘Don’t you think you’re being a little too harsh on Lina?” Jack finally spoke up. “Even if nothing has been officially determined yet, deep down, you all know what really happened, don’t you?”

The cold tone of his voice silenced Ronald and Rowena immediately.

Elowyn’s face went pale, and she looked at Jack, panicked.

Was he saying he believed Elina was innocent, and that everything was her fault? Tears quickly welled up in her eyes.

Before she could speak, Jack’s gaze darkened, and he said, “I’ll cover the costs. If Ms. Anna really moves forward with a lawsuit, I’ll make sure Elowyn has the best lawyer and every resource available.”

Choking back a sob, Elowyn said, “Thank you, Jack. I know it’s all my fault. If going to jail is what it takes to make Elina forgive me, then I’ll accept the punishment.”

Her voice trembled with fear and helplessness, softening the hard edge in Jack’s expression.

He wavered. Seeing the change in his eyes, Elowyn knew she had won this round too. Jack would never let her go to jail.

“Exactly. If Lina hadn’t stolen… sigh,” Rowena let out a heavy breath. “There’s no point bringing it up now, but Elina can’t pretend she’s completely blameless for what’s happening to Elowyn.”

Jack’s brow furrowed slightly, as if bad memories were surfacing, darkening his face. He cut Rowena off sharply. “I’ll do my best to negotiate with the Moores family.”

Hearing that, Ronald and Rowena finally showed some relief on their faces.

Just then, Jack’s phone rang-it was his alarm. Time to pick up Jaslyn from school.
