Chapter 25 Sensitive Child
Elina let out a cold laugh. “So now that you think you’re off the hook, you’re coming to me?”
Her voice carried a chill that made Lisa freeze for a second.

“No, ma’am! It’s just… this past week, my conscience has been eating away at me. Whether or not it was really my fault that Jaslyn suffered so much, I’m willing to go to the police and tell them everything. I’ll turn myself in.”
“Then why are you calling me?” Elina’s voice was calm, almost detached. “You should be going straight to the police.”
Lisa kept crying, her voice full of desperation. “I just wanted to know how Jaslyn is doing. I know I was wrong, but I can’t stop worrying about her.”
After all these years, Lisa knew exactly how Elina had treated her. Elina said, “She’s fine. You should go turn yourself in.”
She hung up, set her phone aside, and stared blankly ahead, her mind drifting. Her phone rang again, pulling her out of her thoughts. Thinking it was Lisa again, she was about to hang up when she saw it was [aslyn’s kindergarten teacher.
After a moment’s hesitation, she picked up. “Mrs. Mansor, I’m sorry to bother you,” the teacher said politely. “But there’s something about Jaslyn that I felt I had to let you know.”
Elina pressed her lips together. “Ms. Jane, I’m quite busy with work these days and don’t usually handle
aslyn’s pickup and drop-off. If there’s anything, you should speak with her father.”
Yes,” Ms. Jane said, sounding a little uncomfortable. “Actually, what I wanted to tell you is about her father.”
Elina frowned slightly, listening as the teacher explained what had happened that afternoon.
Usually, Elina or Lisa picked Jaslyn up early, among the first three parents. But today, not only was Jaslyn he last one left, she even had to stay for the aftercare program for an extra hour.
It wasn’t until Ms. Jane called Jack that he finally showed up, long after school ended.
By then, Jaslyn had cried herself nearly breathless. When she didn’t see the mom she kept asking for, she cried even harder.
Elina could guess why Jack was late, but she was puzzled, Jack had never handled pickup before. Why did ne suddenly show up, even if it was late? Was it because there was no nanny at home? Or had something else happened?
‘If adult matters start affecting a child’s mental health, the damage can follow them for a lifetime.” Ms. Jane said seriously. “At our school, we don’t just focus on physical health. We care deeply about emotional well- being too. My suggestion is that you work on helping Jaslyn process her emotions. Today’s situation really shouldn’t happen again.”
The teacher’s words made sense. Sudden changes, people disappearing from a child’s life, or strangers entering it too soon-these could leave lasting scars on someone as sensitive as Jaslyn.

Ms. Jane had gone out of her way to call so late at night because she genuinely cared. Elina felt a faint stir of emotion in her chest. But it wasn’t for Jaslyn. And it definitely wasn’t for Jack.
She was simply tired of cleaning up after Jack every time he made a mess. After all, the child wasn’t hers alone.
“I understand, Ms. Jane,” Elina said quietly.
“Thank you for your understanding. I won’t bother you further.”
Jack’s workaholic lifestyle meant incidents like this would probably happen again. As for Elowyn, no matter how badly she wanted to marry into the Mansor family, she wasn’t exactly reliable when it came to caring for a child.
Thinking it through, Elina called Lisa back. “Ma’am, I’ve already reported myself to the police-” Lisa started, her voice shaking.
Elina cut her off. “They won’t treat it seriously. The hospital has already closed the case, and Jaslyn is fine. But Lisa, if you really feel guilty, then once you’ve dealt with everything, go back to the Mansor family and take care of Jaslyn.”
