Chapter 31 A Tangled Dinner

Finished

Worried Jaslyn might come down with gastroenteritis again, Jack didn’t dare take her out to eat. Instead, he had the housekeeper from the estate cook up a batch of pancakes and send them to the villa.

They’d already been eating pancakes for three or four days straight.

Jack’s brow tightened more with each bite. “If you really don’t want to eat, you can call Elina to come back.”

“I already told you! She doesn’t want to!” Jaslyn’s voice cracked with frustration, and her eyes welled up with tears.

Right then, Elowyn stepped out from the hallway, smiling as she said, “What do you want to eat, Jaslyn? I’ll make it for you, okay?”

The second Jaslyn heard that, she burst into tears. “Aunt Elowyn’s cooking is gross! Pancakes taste way

better!”

Elowyn froze for a second. Anger flared in her chest, but she forced herself to keep smiling. “That really hurts my feelings when you say that.”

Jaslyn sniffled and scurried behind Jack, mumbling, “But Aunt Elowyn’s cooking really is gross. I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings.”

No matter how much she’d been coached, she was still just a little kid.

And kids weren’t exactly known for hiding their feelings-especially not Jaslyn. Elina had always taught her to speak her mind, no matter what.

Even if she liked Elowyn, the food still tasted awful. She wasn’t about to choke it down just to make Aunt Elowyn happy.

Elowyn’s smile faltered, stiffening at the corners. Jack finally spoke, his voice even and cool. “Then eat here before you head back.”

“I’ll go with you,” Elowyn said warmly, taking Jaslyn’s hand. “Remember what you promised Aunt Elowyn?”

Jaslyn nodded. “Be a good girl!”

The two of them looked so close-it almost felt natural. Jack let out a quiet breath.

He really wasn’t good at this whole parenting thing.

Not far off, Rowena chuckled. “I think Jaslyn really likes Elowyn more. They look just like a little family”

Sabrina’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Too bad Jaslyn’s a girl and not a boy.”

“So what?” Rowena said easily. “We had a spiritual reading done for Elowyn a while back. She said Elowyn’s destined to be the matriarch of a big family-she’ll only have boys”

As she spoke, her gaze fell on Sabrina, sharp and calculating.

Sure enough. Sabrina’s eyes lit up. “Seriously?”

“For real.” Rowena said proudly. “If she were born in ancient times, Elowyn would’ve been the kind to give birth to a crown prince and become the empress.”

“Well then. I’d better make sure Jack treats her right.”

They hadn’t said anything outright, but it was obvious they both knew exactly what the other meant.

After the party, Jack got ready to leave with Jaslyn, but Sabrina stepped in to stop him.

Why not stay the night? I heard Elina hasn’t been back in a while,” she said casually, tugging Elowyn over to her side. “I even invited the Ford family tonight. You’re really not going to stay and keep them company?”

ack cast a quick glance at the Ford family across the room and replied coolly, “Jaslyn has school in the morning. It’s not convenient.”

What’s inconvenient about it? Howard said you still haven’t found a nanny. We’ve got staff here. Just wake ip a little earlier, that’s all.”

Even with her pressing that hard. Jack still said. “No.”

This time, he didn’t even bother giving a reason.

aslyn was already dozing off in Howard’s arms.

she had her fingers in her mouth, murmuring softly.

ack had already opened the car door when Elowyn rushed over and gently scooped Jaslyn into her arms. Jaslyn, do you want to sleep with me tonight?”

ihe

gave a sneaky pinch to Jaslyn’s leg. Even through her pants, it hurt enough to jolt the girl awake.

she burst into tears, wailing uncontrollably. Jack frowned. “What’s wrong?”

lowyn quickly soothed her. “Did you have a terrible dream? I am here. Don’t be scared.”
