“Oh,” Elina replied flatly. “Jaslyn’s father will handle it. I don’t have time to come to the school right now.”
With that, she hung up.
Still, on the ride home, she couldn’t stop wondering what had happened to make Jane sound that shaken. Her voice had been trembling.
Elina shook her head, trying to clear the thoughts.
Jaslyn didn’t need her anymore. Showing up would only make things worse-she’d be treated like an outsider again.
The thought settled her.
Later that evening, after a shower, Elina picked up her phone and called Lisa, who was already back at the villa. “How’s Jaslyn doing?”
“She’s at Eastbridge Police Department. If you care, you should come find out for yourself.”
But the voice on the other end wasn’t Lisa-it was Jack.
Elina froze for a second, startled by his cold tone. Before she could speak, the call cut off.
Police department? Her lips tightened. Her mind jumped to the prank Jaslyn had pulled a month ago. That had nearly spiraled out of control too.
After a moment of hesitation, she got up, changed, and headed out.
Whatever it was, she needed to see it for herself.
Twenty minutes later, Elina arrived at the Eastbridge Police Department-the one closest to Jaslyn’s preschool.
As soon as she stepped inside, before she could even speak to the officer at the front desk, someone grabbed her arm.
“Elina, this was all my fault,” Elowyn said, voice shaky and full of guilt. “Jaslyn was only trying to defend me-please don’t blame her. She’s just a kid.”
Elina instinctively pulled her arm back, her face tightening with irritation.
Of course she’s here. She’s always here when something goes wrong.
Elina’s voice was firm. “What are you even talking about? Kids getting in a fight-how did that end up at the police station?”
Before Elowyn could answer, a figure came charging over.
Jaslyn rushed in and threw herself in front of Elowyn, her eyes fixed on her mother like she was the enemy. “What do you want? Why are you always picking on Aunt Elowyn?”

She looked up at Elowyn’s tearful eyes, then back at Elina’s cold expression. Her whole body tensed, like a little kid ready to lash out.
But the marks on her face gave her away-more wounded than wild.
Elina stared at her, brows furrowing deeper.
Before she could say a word, Jack stepped in with a cold look. “You actually showed up.”
From the second she walked in, she hadn’t even gotten an explanation. Yet somehow, she was already the one being blamed-by both her daughter and her husband.
Jaslyn clung tightly to Elowyn, burying herself in her arms.
Jack stepped forward, shielding them both-like Elina was some kind of threat.
Elina kept her tone cool. “Since Jaslyn’s fine, I don’t see a reason to stay.”
Suddenly, a sharp voice cut through the tension. “You’re her mom?”
A well-dressed woman stepped out of one of the interview rooms, dragging a young boy by the hand. Her eyes locked on Elina. “I’ve seen you before. You’re Jaslyn’s mother, aren’t you? Your kid did this, and you think you can just walk away?”
Elina finally turned and saw the child the woman was holding-his ear was wrapped in layers of gauze, and his face was covered in bloodstains.
She inhaled sharply, stunned. Then she turned back to Jaslyn. “You did this?”
Compared to the boy’s injuries, the bruises on Jaslyn’s face were nothing.
Still nestled in Elowyn’s arms, Jaslyn shouted back, “Other moms protect their kids. You’re the only one who always blames me! I hate you!”
She didn’t seem the least bit sorry-if anything, she leaned in closer, curling deeper into Elowyn’s arms like she was looking for shelter.
Elina stood frozen, staring at her daughter. The calm she’d been holding onto cracked wide open, emotion rushing in all at once.
How did it come to this?
