Chapter 35 Under Pressure

It was obvious Jaslyn hadn’t held back. According to the officers, if the teacher hadn’t stepped in when she did, Wesley could’ve ended up with even worse injuries.

And this? This wasn’t something Elina had ever taught her daughter.

The more she thought about it, the more her focus settled on Elowyn-quiet, tearful, not saying a word.

Jack had never taught Jaslyn anything like that. And the only reason she lashed out was because someone insulted Elowyn.

It didn’t take much for Elina to figure it out-Elowyn had clearly been filling her head with all kinds of things.

Still, now wasn’t the time to start digging into that. Elina didn’t even look at her. She just turned to Jack and said flatly, “Jaslyn crossed a line this time. Don’t you have anything to say?”

She didn’t want to be involved in this mess-especially not one that revolved around Elowyn.

Honestly, she was already thinking about leaving.

[ack sat casually, one leg crossed, phone in hand. He was deep in some work email, brow furrowed. Without even glancing at her, he muttered, “We’re waiting on the lawyer.”

Across from them, the woman let out a sharp laugh. “Please. You think you’re the only ones with a lawyer?” Then she looked down at her son, who was still sniffling softly. “Hold it together, sweetheart. Wait till your dad gets here.”

A few minutes later, both legal teams arrived-along with a tall, broad-shouldered man who walked in with commanding energy.

He headed straight to the boy and pulled him into a tight hug. “It’s okay, son. I am not letting this slide. No one hurts you and walks away.”

The man’s voice was sharp and commanding, loud enough to make Jaslyn flinch in Elowyn’s lap. Her lips trembled, and tears welled up again.

Even Jack looked up from his phone, brows lifting slightly.

The man took a seat, but even sitting down, he had a dominating presence.

He looked straight at Jack, and the scar on his cheek made his stare even more intimidating. “Your kid did

this?”

Jack’s tone stayed calm. “The officer can walk you through what happened.”

That only pissed the man off more. “What’s with the attitude?” the man snapped, slamming his hand on the table hard enough to make the cups rattle.

Elina knew Jack well. In moments like this, he always prioritized himself-not the child, not anyone else

So she stood up, her voice clear and direct. “Your son was the one who started it. He insulted-”

Halfway through her sentence, Elina suddenly froze.

The words dried up in her throat. Because suddenly, it hit her. This has nothing to do with me.

She’d jumped in out of instinct-a reflex to protect her child. But now? No way was she about to defend Elowyn’s mess.

She stood there, frozen, unable to say another word.

Stand up for Elowyn?

Absolutely not.

Across the table, the man sneered. “What, got nothing to say now? Figures. An adult picking a fight with a kid-have you no shame?”

It was obvious-this man wasn’t in the same league as the woman from earlier. The way he carried himself. the weight in his voice, the sheer presence-it all demanded attention. You couldn’t help but tread carefully around a man like him.

Elina didn’t flinch. She just didn’t care enough to argue.

From the moment he walked in, she’d noticed how respectful the officers were. Whoever he was, he had pull.

She turned her head slightly, glanced at Jaslyn, and looked away.

Sure, it looked like she was protecting her daughter-but let’s be honest: Jack was sitting right there. This wasn’t her fight-why put herself in the middle?

She wasn’t the one being insulted.

And Elowyn? She clearly wanted more than just a bond with Jaslyn-she wanted to take her place.

That thought alone made Elina’s cold expression ease just a little.

Right then, her phone buzzed on the table.

She didn’t even acknowledge the still-ranting man. She picked up the phone, glanced at the screen-it was the hospital’s landline.

Probably something urgent.

Without a second thought, she stepped out of the room.

Across the table, Elowyn blinked in surprise. The last thing she expected was for Elina to walk away.

She’s really walking out… Who’s going to stand up for me now?

“Elina!” Her voice cracked. “Where are you going? Jaslyn’s your daughter! You’re just going to walk away?”
