The officer said calmly, “Let’s talk this through. Since the attorney’s here, why don’t we start with what you want and how we can resolve this?”
The tension in the room finally lifted a little, but Elowyn’s face had gone pale.
She wasn’t the mistress. Elina was the one who had come between them!
Outside the house-
The moment Elina stepped out, the call dropped.
She was about to call back when a hand snatched the phone away.
“Tell me what matters more to you, your work or your daughter? You’re seriously just going to stand there and watch her fall apart?”
Every word hit like a gut punch.
Over the past few years, Jack had taken everything he knew about Elina-her fears, her hopes, the things that mattered most to her-and used them to hurt her.
But at this point? His words didn’t sting anymore.
What are you even doing out here? Elowyn can’t handle this. Your daughter is still in there.” Elina snatched her phone back with an icy glare and fired back without mercy.
Her tone was sharp, cutting-but behind it was real concern. She was worried Jaslyn didn’t have anyone on her side in there.
‘You used to use Jaslyn to tie me down and get my attention. Now you’re acting like she’s not even yours.” Jack’s voice was ice cold, dripping with sarcasm. Every word was meant to cut.
But Elina just gave a dry laugh. “You’re the one who told her to stay close to Elowyn and keep her distance from me. Now that everything’s falling apart, suddenly I’m supposed to step back in and be ‘Mom’ again?”
‘Don’t twist my words like that,” he said, his expression growing even colder. “I never did that.”
Was that supposed to be an explanation? Elina stared at him.
In all the years they’d known each other, he rarely said the same thing twice.
‘You didn’t? Then it must’ve been Elowyn, huh?”
But Elina wasn’t that same woman from before-the one who’d hang on every word he said, waiting for him to show he cared.
“It has nothing to do with Elowyn.”
Elina laughed aloud. “Right, so it’s not you, and it’s not her-so it must be me. I was only away for less than a month, and Jaslyn’s already like this. And you’re seriously blaming me?”

Jack looked at the scorn on her face, heard the anger in her voice, and felt something stir deep inside.
The truth was, this wasn’t Elina’s fault.
What happened today… had everything to do with Elowyn.
And he hadn’t come out here to argue. Deep down, he was terrified she’d walk away again-leave everything behind just like before.
They needed Elina.
That thought had been stuck in his head for weeks.
But the second he saw her, his pride took over and shoved every honest thought aside.
His gaze darkened. “Kids are sensitive. They can feel who really cares about them better than anyone.”
Elina raised a brow, her voice sharp. “And what exactly are you trying to say?”
“If Jaslyn doesn’t cling to you, it’s not because someone told her not to. She knows who’s truly good to her.”
She let out a slow, furious laugh. “Jack, you can’t play both sides. You don’t get to say that.”
Jack’s eyes flickered. “What did you just say?”
“I mean,” she said, her voice rising, “you’re seriously trusting the judgment of a five-year-old? If she’s so good at making decisions, then tell me-why is she in the hospital with food poisoning? Why did she almost go into shock? Why are we even dealing with all this right now?”
Her words came hard and fast, every one loaded with anger.
Jack had no comeback. Still, he muttered under his breath, “Figures. Jaslyn’s just a kid, but she’s already vicious. Guess she takes after you.”
One careless, cold line-and the last bit of patience snapped.
But when, she saw his expression-that same stubborn, self-righteous face, always so quick to blame and never once apologizing-every word she wanted to throw at him melted into a mocking smile.
