Chapter 37 What She Left Behind

Finished

Jack didn’t move until Elina disappeared through the station doors. Only then did he blink, finally snapping out of it. He pressed a hand to his chest, right over the sharp, empty ache that had settled there.

It didn’t make sense. There was nothing physically wrong, but it still hurt-deep and hollow.

What she’d said kept replaying in his mind. And the scariest part? She meant it.

If he really let go of the one thing still connecting them, Elina wouldn’t hesitate. She’d take Jaslyn and vanish-for good.

Jack’s face darkened.

Was she really that eager to walk away? Or was this just another one of her stunts? He couldn’t forget how she’d ended up in his bed all those years ago…

His brow tightened at the thought.

No matter what, Jack wasn’t about to let her walk away. Not this time.

Elina, meanwhile, had already climbed into the car and was on the phone with the hospital.

She checked on her patient’s condition, gave instructions for treatment, and then called Lisa.

“Mrs. Mansor? Are you already at the station?” Lisa asked as soon as the call connected. “Mr. Mansor picked up the phone just before I did-he saw your name on the screen.”

Elina closed her eyes and pressed her fingers to her aching temples. “It’s fine, Lisa. I actually need a favor.”

“Of course,” Lisa replied quickly. “What do you need?”

‘No matter how this turns out, I want you to tell me everything-every way this incident affects Jaslyn.”

She still couldn’t bring herself to cut ties completely.

If Elowyn had actually been good for Jaslyn, Elina might’ve walked away without looking back.

But clearly, things hadn’t gone the way she’d hoped.

It had only been a matter of days, and already Elowyn had turned Jaslyn into a spoiled, entitled little girl.

Still, Elina had no plans to go back to how things used to be. She wasn’t going to throw herself into Jaslyn’s life like before. Not again. But while she was still in the country, she’d do what she could

Lisa agreed without hesitation. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Mansor. I’ll keep a close eye on her.”

“Thank you.”

After ending the call, Elina finally let herself breathe.

Finisher

Back at the station-

By the time Jack returned to the room, chaos had broken out.

A man was shouting over everyone. A woman and child were in tears. The officers couldn’t get a word in, and the lawyers were locked in a heated argument.

Jaslyn was standing on the table, shielding a sobbing Elowyn behind her. Her little face was red with frustration as she shouted back at the couple across from them, arguing with everything she had.

She was clearly outnumbered. Her words barely carried, and her lashes were still damp with tears. But even so, she refused to back down.

A police officer tried to lift her off the table, but Jaslyn fought.back.

“Don’t you dare bully Aunt Elowyn! You’re all mean!”

Jack’s face darkened instantly.

He stepped forward and scooped her into his arms.

Elina’s words were still echoing in his head, so when Elowyn clung to his arm like it was her last lifeline, all he felt was irritation-like she didn’t belong.

With Jack back in the room, the chaos settled a bit. Only the little boy was still crying loudly.

Jack finally spoke. “What’s the outcome?”

The man across the table glared at him. “Outcome? Who the h*ll do you think you are?”

Before he could finish, Jack’s attorney, John, cut in. “Mr. Mansor, they’re demanding that Jaslyn drop to her knees in front of the entire school and apologize to Wesley.”

A calculated humiliation. The kind only bullies would make.\

Jack looked up, eyes like ice, and locked onto the couple across from him. His voice was flat and chilling.

“Fine.”

The room fell dead silent.

Wesley just stared at him, stunned. Everyone else was frozen in disbelief.

Jaslyn’s mouth fell open-but before she could say anything, her tears spilled over.

Jack gently rubbed her back, comforting her-something he’d never done before.
