Chapter 38 An Eye for an Eye
Finished
Jack pushed every other thought aside. Right now, the only thing that mattered was protecting Jaslyn.
Elowyn clung to his arm, shaking it as she whispered, “Jack, if it really has to come to this… then I’ll find a way to make it up to Jaslyn…”
She didn’t get to finish.
Jack yanked his arm free and turned to the man. “My daughter did hurt your son. Looks like my daughter’s stronger than I thought.”
At first, it sounded like an apology. But the more you thought about it, the more off it sounded.
The man narrowed his eyes. “Wait a second. Are you saying my son’s weak?”
The officer cut in, frowning. “Is this really the time for that?”
Jack continued, calm but direct. “I’m not denying Jaslyn did something wrong. I’m her father-I take responsibility. But Wesley isn’t exactly innocent either. Words hurt. And for a kid his age to speak like that? Maybe he should start by apologizing to the person he insulted.”
The man scoffed. “My kid didn’t say anything wrong.”
His attitude was cocky and dismissive-he didn’t even bother looking at Elowyn.
Jack’s eyes sharpened, his voice cool and cutting. “So you’re not backing down? Fine. Neither am I.”
The man rolled his eyes. “I never said that. If an apology’s what you want, fine. It’s just words.”
Jack didn’t flinch. “Then let’s make it count. In front of the whole school. On his knees.”
The room went still.
The man looked stunned, then furious. “What the hell is this? Kids talk trash, and now adults are demanding public shaming?”
Jack let out a dry laugh. “You’re the one who said adults shouldn’t step in when kids fight. My daughter hit your son, yeah-but he’s fine. And you think that justifies trying to shame her in front of the whole school? Tell me how does that make sense?”
Maxwell’s face flushed red with anger. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
A nearby officer stepped forward. “Mr. Maxwell, Mr. Mansor just offered a solution. If you’re willing to accept it, we can start putting it in writing.”
Maxwell exploded. “Accept it? You want my son to drop to his knees in front of the whole school? Are you out of your mind? That’s abuse! I’ll sue him for bullying-and for putting my kid through emotional distress!”
His voice was rising fast, completely ignoring the fact that they were still in a police station.

John, Jack’s attorney, didn’t flinch. He even smiled a little. “Actually, the idea came from your wife. Mr. Maxwell didn’t seem to have a problem with it earlier.”
Jack’s team had always been good at turning the tables-and John had learned from the best.
“You… you people-”
But Jack wasn’t listening anymore. He was focused on Jaslyn, speaking to her softly under his breath.
Elowyn stood frozen beside him, thrown off by how fast everything had flipped.
The truth was obvious now: the Blooks family had stirred up the drama. They’d targeted a child first. And now that it was coming back on them, they couldn’t handle it.
Even with Maxwell’s status, the officers were starting to lose patience.
From there, John took over. In less than half an hour, Maxwell had run out of tricks-and out of leverage. He had no choice but to back down.
“Once the hospital report comes in, the payment better be made immediately. And don’t think that’s all-I want compensation for my son’s emotional trauma too.” Maxwell growled, latching onto the demand like. it was his last bargaining chip, his tone bitter and unwilling to let go.
Jack didn’t respond. He stood up with Jaslyn still in his arms.
“You hit your classmate. You didn’t hold back. Don’t you think you should apologize?” he asked gently, setting her down.
Jaslyn gave a small nod and turned toward Wesley. The fire in her eyes was gone now, replaced by calm.
“I’m sorry, Wesley. I shouldn’t have hit you. But you shouldn’t have said those things about Aunt Elowyn. She’s a really good person.”
Wesley peeked out from behind his mother and stared at Jaslyn.
“Don’t be mad at me, okay?” he said timidly. “Summer Scott gave me a lollipop and told me to say those things. I’m sorry too.”
Jaslyn blinked. “Why would he tell you to do that?”
Wesley looked guilty. “She said your dad got taken away by your Aunt Elowyn, and you were really sad. She thought if I said that stuff, it would cheer you up.”
“You idiot! Why are you apologizing?” Maxwell snapped. “You’re just like your mother-completely useless!”
