Chapter 39 Between the Lines

aslyn mumbled something under her breath, catching Jack’s attention.

Scott family?”

I was a common name-but coincidentally, Jack knew a Scott family. And not just casually.

He was about to ask Jaslyn a few more questions when Elowyn suddenly pulled her into a tight hug.

Jaslyn, thank God you’re okay. I would’ve felt terrible if something happened to you.” She gently released her, brushing Jaslyn’s hair back as she checked a faint scratch on her cheek. “Does it hurt? You can’t do omething like that again, okay? People can say awful things about me, and sure, it stings, but I can take it. But if you get hurt, that’s real pain.”

ack watched the scene quietly.

For a moment, the unease he’d been feeling about Elowyn disappeared. She looked genuinely concerned.

Maybe Elina had been too hard on her. Maybe she was just biased.

Let’s go home,” he finally said, ending the conversation.

lowyn turned her head slightly, quietly exhaling in relief. She took Jaslyn’s hand and walked beside Jack s they left the station.

The three of them got into the car.

aslyn was buckled into her child seat in the back, her arms crossed as she looked around the car with a

out. “Where’s Mommy? She left? I got bullied today, and Mommy didn’t stay to protect me?”

Her voice was full of hurt and confusion-and just enough blame to cut deep.

Elowyn glanced at Jack’s tight expression, then jumped in with a gentle voice. “She probably had to get >ack to work. I’m sure she didn’t want to leave, sweetie.”

fer face wore a sympathetic look, but inside, she was practically glowing with satisfaction.

she didn’t care why Elina left. What mattered was that she wasn’t there when Jaslyn needed her. That kind of absence had a way of leaving a mark.

ust as Elowyn was expecting Jaslyn to burst into tears, Jack suddenly spoke.

‘As long as I’m around, no one’s going to hurt you.” He paused, then looked over his shoulder at her. “But you can’t keep acting out like that, okay?”

aslyn’s eyes dropped to her lap. She gave a nod without saying a word.

Elowyn thought his words sounded a little strange. She carefully asked, “Did Elina say something to Jaslyn before she left?”

Jack didn’t hide it. “She said Jaslyn’s gotten a bit spoiled.”

Honestly, he had no clue how to handle Jaslyn on his own until Lisa came back.

A flicker of something passed through Elowyn’s eyes. She jumped on the opportunity. “She’s just a kid. Jack. Kids run on emotion and instinct. Elina really shouldn’t be so hard on her.” Then she turned and smiled at Jaslyn, her tone soft and warm. “Don’t worry. Even if Mommy’s mad at you, I will always be on your side. I won’t let her blame you for anything.”

Jaslyn’s lip started to tremble, and just a few gentle words from Elowyn were enough to bring tears to her

eyes.

All she felt was sadness-because Mommy only ever seemed to blame her.

But she didn’t let herself cry. Instead, she sniffled, held it in, and gave a quiet nod.

“Aunt Elowyn, you’re really nice. I’ll be better from now on. I don’t want to make you worry.”

“That’s not what I-” Elowyn froze for a second.

That wasn’t what she meant at all.

She wasn’t trying to be comforting. She wanted Jaslyn to cry. To fall apart. To lash out at Elina and cling to her instead. She thought if the girl broke down now, Jack’s patience would run dry, and he’d finally cut ties with Elina for good.

But Jaslyn was too composed. She pouted for a bit, said a few quiet words about Elina, and then stopped.

Elowyn saw that faint smile start to return-and it made her grit her teeth.

That little brat looked way too much like Elina when she smiled.

God knows what Elina taught her to make her hold back tears like that-like she could just shake it off and move on like nothing happened.

“Are you going somewhere?” Jack’s voice cut in sharply, pulling Elowyn out of her thoughts.

She quickly tucked her hair behind her ear and answered sweetly, “It’s still a workday, right? Of course I’m heading back to the office with you.”

“Then why were you at the station?” Jack gave her a look, and his voice turned noticeably cooler

“I-I heard Jaslyn was in trouble and rushed over,” she said, voice soft. “I was worried…”

“No more walking out on your job without permission,” he said flatly. “Unless it’s an emergency or work- related, stay at your post.”
