Chapter 40 Lines That Shift
Jack’s expression finally began to soften.
She had a point.
He let out a low, thoughtful hum-like he realized his tone had been too sharp-and after a pause, added, “Come to the house for dinner tonight.”
Elowyn lit up instantly. “Okay. And Jack, don’t be upset-I promise, if something like this happens again, I’ll let you know ahead of time.” Then she turned to Jaslyn and smiled sweetly. “Thank you for standing up for me.”
But under that smile was a knot of frustration.
If it weren’t for Jaslyn-if it weren’t for Elina-Jack wouldn’t have spoken to her so coldly!
Because of the incident at school, Jaslyn didn’t want to go back. Jack didn’t push it. He simply brought her home.
From the car window, Elowyn watched as Lisa came out to greet them. The second she saw her, her breath caught in her throat.
“She’s back?” She blurted without thinking, then immediately turned to Jack, realizing how it sounded.
Thankfully, his expression didn’t change. He just answered flatly, “Jaslyn’s only comfortable with Lisa taking care of her.”
Elowyn knew how hard it had been to find a suitable nanny for the house. The fact that Lisa was back wasn’t just surprising-it was unsettling.
And yet, the calmer Jack seemed, the more uneasy she became.
At the hospital, she’d been the one who quietly sent the nanny away. Later, Rowena had stepped in, handed Lisa a wad of cash, and told her to leave-and to keep quiet.
Everything about it screamed guilt.
Back then, Elowyn’s actions had nearly put that little girl in the ICU.
Now, as the car pulled away from the house and headed toward the oflice, Elowyn sat stiflly in the passenger seat. But as the ride went on, her nerves slowly began to settle.
Lisa was back, yes-but Jack hadn’t mentioned what had happened.
Maybe Lisa really hadn’t said anything.
Or maybe… he’d chosen to let it go.
The thought made her relax into the seat, tension fading from her shoulders.
In the quiet car, she turned slightly to look at him, and a flicker of hope crept into her eyes.

By now, Jack had stepped in twice to shield her from legal consequences. That had to mean something- he wouldn’t have done that if he didn’t care.
Elina had gone to the hospital to check on her patient before heading home to rest.
By the time she woke up, it was past 7 p.m., and the sky outside her window had already gone dark. For a brief moment, an odd feeling crept in-quiet, cold, and lonely.
But the feeling vanished the moment her phone rang.
“Mrs. Mansor, everything’s been resolved. Jaslyn said, Mr. Mansor protected her today.”
Lisa’s upbeat voice came through the line.
Elina replied with a quiet, detached, “Mm.”
There was no way Jack would ever let anyone make Jaslyn drop to her knees and apologize. His pride would never allow it.
“But Jaslyn still seems a little shaken up,” Lisa continued. “She said she doesn’t want to go back to school for now.” Lisa paused, listening to the silence on the other end. Then she asked gently, “Would you like to speak with her? Maybe encourage her a little?”
Elina stepped out of bed. “No.”
‘Ma’am, you’re still her mother. Even with misunderstandings and distance, I’m sure Jaslyn-”
Elina cut her off. “Lisa, I have things to do.”
Suddenly, a bright, excited voice came through the receiver.
‘Mommy!”
Elina froze.
How long had it been since she’d heard Jaslyn say that with such joy?
Her hand paused at the fridge handle. For a split second, she almost responded. But then another voice came through, breaking the moment.
“Jaslyn, how’d you know I came home with Daddy?”
It was Elowyn’s voice.
Elina’s breath caught in her throat, her brow furrowing as she silently ended the call.
So that sweet little “Mommy” wasn’t meant for her. Had Jaslyn already started calling Elowyn Mom?
