Chapter 42 We’re A Family Now!
Fortunately, seeing Jaslyn eating so heartily put Lisa at ease.
As they neared the end of the meal, Jaslyn glanced at the two people sitting across from her and suddenly beamed. “Daddy, don’t we look like a little family of three with Aunt Elowyn?”
Now that she’s got something tasty to eat, she’s already forgotten her real mom. Elowyn paused, then smiled instantly. “Jaslyn, what are you saying? Aunt Elowyn isn’t your mommy. Only a daddy, a mommy, and a child can be called a family of three.”
She sneaked a sideways glance at Jack; his silence disappointed her, though not entirely.
Because silence meant tacit approval.
Jaslym, however, was overjoyed. “I don’t care! We are a family of three now. Aunt Elowyn is finally part of our family!”
“So where does that leave Mommy? If she heard you say something like that, she’d be really sad. You mustn’t say that in front of her.”
The smile on Elowyn’s lips deepened; she feigned embarrassment and tried to downplay it, though in truth, she wanted Jaslyn to keep going.
Lisa, unable to take any more, came over with a jug of water and topped off the cups on the table, cutting the conversation short.
Her lips were pressed into a tight line; listening to Jaslyn, watching Jack remain silent, she genuinely felt sorry for Elina. No wonder she doesn’t want to come back. With a husband and daughter like this, what’s there to miss?
Just as Jaslyn was about to speak again, Lisa quickly interjected, “Sir, the fruit your wife planted is ripe. She used to pick it herself and make pastries with it; Mrs. Mansor loved them, and so did you.”
Jack still said nothing; his fingers, however, tightened slightly around his fork.
“Such a shame I don’t know how to make them. Since Mrs. Mansor isn’t home this year, I’ve just been storing them in the fridge, worried they’ll go bad,” Lisa added wistfully, carefully watching Jack’s reaction.
He paused mid-bite, took a sip of water, then finally spoke.
“Send some over to the old house. Grandpa likes them too; the staff there will know how to make it.”
Lisa ventured, “Should we send some to Mrs. Mansor as well? She likes them too.”
After a moment’s thought, Jack said, “If she wants them, send some over.”
A smile broke across Lisa’s face. “Alright, I’ll start packing them up now.”
After she left, the atmosphere at the table lightened considerably.
Just as Elowyn was about to speak, Jaslyn cheered, “Yay! When Lisa finishes making them, I can go visit

Great-Grandpa and eat the fruit again!”
Jack’s expression softened a little, as if something had come to mind. “Only if you go to school. No staying home all day.”
“Daddy, you’re starting to sound just like mommy!” She thought for a moment, then nodded. “Okay, for hibiscus cake and to see Great-Grandpa, I’ll listen to Daddy!”
Elowyn opened her mouth, but the words caught in her throat-nothing came out.
How strange. Elina’s not even here, yet she lingers like a ghost that won’t leave. The dinner she had looked forward to had turned into this mess; all she could do was keep smiling.
Once they were finally finished eating, Jack called for the driver to take her home.
Watching Jack’s retreating back, Elowyn pressed her lips together and tugged down the neckline of her blouse just a little.
I came all the way here, there’s no way I’m wasting this chance. She pulled Jaslyn close and whispered in her ear.
“Aren’t you scared sleeping alone at night?”
Jaslyn pouted, thinking it over. “Yeah, but mommy said I need to learn to be independent…”
“You’re still a little girl; no need to learn that yet. How about I stay and keeps you company tonight? That way, you won’t be scared of the dark.”
Elowyn coaxed her with such sweetness that Jaslyn’s face lit up.
