The Kid's New Mommy Wish: Daddy Said Yes novel Chapter 43

Chapter 43 Oh No, She’s Competent

Just a moment ago, Jack had caught a fleeting expression on Jaslyn’s face-one that oddly reminded him of Elina.

Nodding had been an impulsive, inexplicable reaction; still, he’d added a condition to his words, like placing a bet.

Jaslyn happily agreed in the end, tugging Elowyn along as she headed upstairs.

Jack watched their backs disappear from view, and a ridiculous thought suddenly crossed his mind. If Elina knew about this, she definitely wouldn’t be pleased.

But he’d already exhausted so much energy trying to coax Jaslyn to sleep lately; letting Elowyn stay over was a perfectly practical solution.

Just as he was mulling this over, a shrill ringtone abruptly shattered the peaceful atmosphere.

Lisa picked up the call; her expression instantly changed. She looked at Jack. “Sir, something’s happened.”

Benjamin had lost consciousness and had already been rushed to the hospital.

The Mansor couple had gone abroad recently for an art exhibition; only one long-serving housekeeper had stayed behind with the old man.

The moment Jack heard the news, he didn’t hesitate. He strode straight to the door.

“Lisa, stay with Jaslyn tonight and take her to school tomorrow.”

He was already out the door like a gust of wind before the last word even left his mouth.

Elowyn hadn’t even had a chance to enjoy the high spirits she’d been in before things took a turn. She immediately let go of Jaslyn and followed after Jack.

“Aunt Elowyn, where are you going?”

Jaslyn stood on the stairs, watching her.

“Great-grandpa’s sick. Daddy already left. Are you going too? Aren’t you staying with me tonight?”

Jack already left, what’s the point of staying?

Elowyn gently replied, “Be good and go to sleep, Jaslyn. Aunt Elowyn’s just going to check on him for a bit and then I’ll come back, alright?”

Jaslyn believed her and nodded sweetly. “I’ll wait for you, Aunt Elowyn.”

After Elowyn left, Jaslyn turned to Lisa with concern. “Will Great-grandpa be okay?”

Lisa guided her back to the bedroom. “Of course he will. Tonight I’ll help you with your bath and stay with you. How does that sound?”

Elowyn managed to catch Jack just before he drove off and slid into the car beside him.

Finished

As soon as she got in, her voice trembled slightly, choked with emotion. “Jack, don’t worry too much. Mr. Benjamin is blessed; he’ll be alright.”

Jack said nothing, flooring the gas pedal all the way to the hospital; they arrived in just over ten minutes.

Elowyn followed him out of the car, trying to comfort him, though inwardly she was quite annoyed, the evening she’d planned had just been completely derailed.

Benjamin had always been under the care of Dennis, a senior attending physician at the city hospital.

Dennis, now in his fifties, had been something of a mentor to Elina and was once a student Benjamin had financially supported.

Knowing Elina was Benjamin’s granddaughter-in-law, Dennis had given her a heads-up before accepting

the case.

Elina had been off work today and was already getting ready for bed when the call came in. She hurried to the hospital without a second thought.

Both Dennis and Elina were well aware of Benjamin’s condition. Since this episode was more serious than usual, Dennis made an exception and allowed Elina to assist in the surgery.

So when Jack arrived outside the operating room, he saw Elina rushing in. Through the small window, he watched as the nurse helped her change into a sterile gown.

He froze for a moment; somehow, all his anxiety evaporated right then.

As long as Elina’s here, everything will be okay.

“Jack, why did my sister go in too?” Elowyn asked, biting her lip. “Do you think she might be doing this on purpose, because she misunderstood us?”

She didn’t finish the sentence; the pause was suggestive enough.

“She wouldn’t dare,” Jack replied reflexively, his face darkening.

But deep down, that wasn’t what he truly believed.

After all these years, Jack realized he didn’t know Elina all that well-but if there was one thing he did understand, it was her professionalism.

When Elina had first married into the Mansor family, the old man had been her only supporter; he stood firm in defending her decision to continue working and even smoothed the way for her to return to her job after giving birth.
