Chapter 44 She Cried, He Noticed
If only Benjamin had died on the operating table, then Elina would become the disgrace of the Mansor family, condemned by all.
But things rarely went as one wished. Just forty minutes later, the nurse opened the door.
“The patient is no longer in danger.”
At those words, a flicker of disappointment passed through Elowyn’s eyes.
On the surface, though, she looked overjoyed, like someone who’d just survived a disaster. “That’s wonderful! Jack, Mr. Benjamin’s going to be okay!”
Jack finally felt his heart settle as he peered into the room.
“But he still needs to be monitored in the hospital,” the nurse added. “Please step aside; the doctors are moving him to the ward.”
As the nurse cleared the path, Elina and Dennis emerged, wheeling Benjamin out.
Elina held the IV bag high, running swiftly and steadily, her eyes locked on the monitor attached to the stretcher, too tense even to breathe.
Sweat clung to her forehead; a few fine strands of hair stuck to her skin.
Even with most of her face hidden behind a mask, her anxiety and concern were plain to see.
From the moment Jack saw her, he found it hard to look away. How had I never noticed before how beautiful her eyes were?
When Elina was working, she looked nothing like the indifferent woman he was used to. She was completely different from the cold figure who barely looked his way.
Jack took a few steps, trailing behind her.
Sensing his presence, Elina turned around; her bright, clear eyes met his.
Suddenly, Elowyn cried out, leaning heavily on Jack. “Jack, I think I twisted my ankle.”
She grabbed his arm, yanking his attention back.
Jack stopped and looked down, supporting her. “Can you still walk?”
“I think so.” Elowyn hobbled forward with his help. “My sister’s really amazing. If I hadn’t gone abroad and had chosen to study medicine instead, maybe I could’ve helped grandpa tonight too, maybe I could’ve given you some peace of mind.”
Jack paused mid-step-
To him, Elowyn had gone abroad carrying sorrow and regret.

If Elina hadn’t taken advantage of him while drunk, if she hadn’t gotten pregnant from just that one night, if Benjamin hadn’t forced him to take responsibility, Elowyn would never have left, heartbroken and wronged.
A wave of guilt surged in his chest; Elina’s image was pushed from his mind as he looked down at Elowyn’s tear-filled eyes.
“Don’t say that. Even without Elina, Dr. Dennis could’ve turned things around and saved Grandpa. You don’t need to study medicine. Just do what you love, and I’ll feel at ease.”
His voice was calm and gentle, far more comforting than usual.
Tears welled in Elowyn’s eyes.
“But I just want to help you, Jack… Sometimes I really hate how useless I am.”
Her voice trembled, her lips pressed together in a pitiful, fragile way-impossible not to feel moved.
Jack pressed his lips into a line and continued supporting her. “Of course not. You’re wonderful, Elowyn; don’t talk about yourself like that.”
“Really?” Elowyn looked up at him, eyes full of hope. “You really think that?”
Jack gave a small nod.
Her heart thumped wildly, like a deer caught in a trap; she was so giddy she almost laughed.
But she couldn’t let herself smile-she had to bite down hard on her leg just to hold it in.
It was a while before they finally reached the hospital room.
Inside, Elina personally connected the monitors to Benjamin and gave him a thorough physical check.
Only when she confirmed everything was under control did she finally let out a breath and wipe the sweat from her brow.
“Do you have any idea how dangerous the bloodletting method you just used was?” Dennis’ harsh voice suddenly rang out, scolding her without mercy. “One wrong move and you could’ve severed an artery-it could’ve been irreversible!”
Elina lifted her head and bit her lip before nodding. “I’m sorry, Dr. Dennis. I was reckless. But the situation was critical just now.
