Chapter 45 Elina’s Tears Hit Harder

Dennis continued, “I can never repay the kindness Mr. Benjamin showed me in my lifetime; just like you, I’m afraid something will happen to him-afraid he’ll have to go through something he never wanted.”

As he spoke, there was a visible sadness on Dennis’ face.

Elina looked at Benjamin lying in bed, her eyes turning red. “Mr. Benjamin was a good man; he was always

kind to me.”

“Mr. Benjamin had a deep attachment to the medical profession because his wife passed away while on duty. Lina, you’re his granddaughter-in-law; he cares about you, and you know his condition better than anyone. In the future…”

Dennis trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.

Elina could no longer hold back; tears streamed down her face as she nodded emphatically.

“Dr. Dennis, I understand. I’ll take good care of Mr. Benjamin.”

Dennis gave a quiet hum. “Let him spend whatever time he has left doing things that bring him joy.”

They both knew-Benjamin’s health had already declined significantly; this cerebral infarction had made him even more fragile.

If something like this happened again, there was no guarantee he would survive it.

Suddenly, the door to the hospital room opened and Jack stepped inside.

Elina quickly wiped the tears from her cheeks, adjusted her mask, and confirmed the final stats with Dennis.

“Dr. Dennis,” Jack said, his gaze drifting to Elina, “how’s grandpa doing?”

Some of the sorrow on Dennis’ face softened. “This time, it’s nothing serious. He just needs a few more days of rest before he can be discharged.”

As Dennis spoke, Jack found his eyes drawn to Elina again and again.

Moments ago, standing outside the door, he had seen her through the glass-tears falling quietly down her face.

He’d almost never seen Elina cry. He didn’t know she had such a fragile side.

Like she might shatter at the slightest touch.

But she’d never shown that side in front of him. She was always composed, always wore that quiet smile.

“And going forward, make sure he never-

Dennis was still speaking patiently, but Jack had already tuned out.

Finished

He thought. If Elina ever lowered her guard with me, if she ever shed even one tear, I would forgive everything. I’d take her back and let her return to being my wife.

Even if the rest of their lives were loveless, he could still protect her and Jaslyn forever.

But…

Jack furrowed his brow; he didn’t know if it was Benjamin’s condition or Elina’s tears that unsettled him.

more.

Elowyn, watching his shifting gaze from the side, turned her eyes toward Elina, full of resentment.

Her hand clenched into a fist at her side, burning with jealousy that wouldn’t go away no matter how hard she tried.

She was a woman, she knew exactly how much weight Elina’s tears carried. They had probably moved Jack already.

Shameless little wench. How dare she seduce Jack right in front of me! The more Elowyn thought about it, the more furious she became; she wanted nothing more than to lunge forward and scratch that always-so- composed face of Elina’s.

“That’s everything for now,” Dennis said. “If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Oh, and Lina knows Mr. Benjamin’s condition very well; you can ask her too.”

Just as he finished speaking, Elowyn suddenly burst into tears. “Lina… what you said earlier-does that mean Mr. Benjamin doesn’t have much time left?”

Her voice trembled with sorrow and regret, enough to make anyone feel heartbroken.

But Elina’s expression turned cold; she looked at Elowyn sharply and snapped, “Don’t say things like that next to the patient. If you want to cry, take it outside. He needs peace and quiet right now.”

Does she not understand human language? Elina could barely contain the urge to throw her out as Elowyn’s crying grew louder and more uncontrolled.

Jack, I’m just… I’m just so worried about Mr. Benjamin.”

Elowyn wept like a flower in the rain, tears falling as if they cost nothing.

She looked up at Jack with her big, red, watery eyes, her entire posture delicate-like a porcelain doll ready
