Chapter 48 It’s Just a Car, Jack
That night six years ago had grown hazy, like a dream.
Jack truly couldn’t recall the details anymore, but Elina’s words had planted a seed of doubt.
He frowned, pulled out his phone, and sent a text to Howard. Only then did he drive the car back to its original spot and return to the hospital room.
Elowyn, feeling unwell, had already been taken home by someone from the Ford family.
Inside the hospital room, only Jack remained, aside from Benjamin, who still hadn’t regained consciousness.
Jack lay on the companion bed, yet for some reason, all he could think about was the way Elina had lowered her head in tears, and how her waist seemed slimmer now. The images tangled in his mind, keeping him wide awake.
With his eyes closed and his brows furrowed, Jack lay there; this was going to be a sleepless night.
But Elina, after venting her anger, had put the unpleasantness at the hospital behind her by the time she got home.
She slept well. In fact, she woke up just before her alarm even went off.
While eating breakfast, she got a call from Xenon.
“Did you sleep well?”
Ever since moving into this house, Elina had been sleeping well, eating well; naturally, her mood had improved a lot too.
“Not bad. You’re off work already and about to sleep?”
“Finished long ago. I just finished reviewing two thesis papers for the interns. Figured you’d be up around now, so I gave you a call.”
Elina put the phone on speaker and answered with a smile as she ate, “You really do have good timing. So what’s up?”
“I got you a gift, it should be arriving soon,” Xenon said. His voice was cool, yet never distant.
She paused for a second. “What gift? Out of nowhere? I’m already staying at your place and that’s more than enough-”
Before she could finish, the doorbell rang.
Phone still in hand, Elina went to open the door. “That fast?”
Standing outside was the same butler who’d brought her the keys last time. He handed her a box with a beaming smile
1/3
“Dr. Ford, the car’s been filled up, you’re good to go.”
With that, he gave her no chance to respond and turned to leave.
Elina opened the box and gasped when she saw the car keys.
“Xenon, are you crazy or just too rich for your own good?”
The car was expensive; and yet, he’d spoken so lightly of it, casually calling it a “gift.”
“You’re not the type to demand anything, so I picked a model that suits you and also has top safety ratings. I hope you’ll like it.”
“No way. I can’t accept this.” Elina frowned and snapped the box shut, her refusal firm and righteous.
“I haven’t celebrated your birthday in years. Consider this a belated gift for all those missed years. A birthday present, you can’t refuse that.”
He always managed to say things Elina couldn’t argue against.
“No matter what you say,” she insisted, “I’m not accepting the car.”
“I heard you’ve been walking everywhere. What-left the Mansor family and left your car behind too?”
There was a teasing edge to Xenon’s voice. Elina could hear the mischief in it.
Oddly enough, she didn’t try to explain. Instead, she went quiet for a few seconds before speaking again.
“That car belonged to Jack.”
This time, it was Xenon’s turn to go silent.
After a long pause, he finally asked, “His? Didn’t you start using it before you even got married?”
Elina let out a bitter laugh. “Yeah. He bought it, probably just trying to be nice to me because I was Elowyn’s sister.”
Of course he cared about Elowyn; that’s why he treated the Ford family so well. She hadn’t misunderstood his intentions back then; still, she’d treasured everything he’d given her.
Xenon suddenly chuckled. “So, when it’s something he gave you just out of obligation, you’re happy to accept it. But when I give you something as a birthday present-something chosen just for you, you turn it down?”
Elina snapped out of her thoughts. “No, it’s not like that. You’re getting the wrong idea, I just-”
