Chapter 52 Not Today, Mom
Elina glanced down at her flats. “Pretty sure my shoes don’t have blades on them.”

Elina pondered. If someone said I broke her leg, I might believe it. But split the skin? What, is Elowyn made of porcelain? Did I crack her open with one kick?
Jack’s mood soured even more when he saw the sarcasm flicker across her face. “She’s your biological sister. Even if you completely misunderstand me, do you really have to talk like that?”
“And how exactly would you like me to speak to you?” Elina let out a cold snort. “The only reason I’m even speaking to you at all is because of Mr. Benjamin. Do you really think you or Elowyn hold any weight in my heart?”
“You’re getting more and more out of line with that mouth of yours!” he snapped, stepping toward her in
anger.
Elina took a step back, her guard up. “Don’t try anything. This is a hospital.”
Suddenly, Jack’s phone buzzed. He glanced down at the screen before saying, “So you do know it’s a hospital. If you don’t want to make a name for yourself around here, I’d suggest you apologize to Elowyn.”
“And who are you? Why should I listen to you?” Elina didn’t back down an inch.
The phone kept ringing; whoever it was, they weren’t giving up. With no other choice, Jack finally let her go-for now.
“Then go ahead and see what happens when you go up against me.”
With that, he answered the call and walked off.
Elina stood where she was, brows knitted tightly.
The consequences of going up against him? Haven’t I already tasted them? What more did Jack plan to do? She was worried, if only slightly. Not because she feared for herself—she just didn’t want to get tangled up in this mess right before leaving the country for school.
Jack left the hospital and drove straight back to the office.
Howard handed him an analysis of the day’s market activity.
“Mr. Mansor, the stock drop this time was serious, even worse than when Evercrest Group blindsided us. We haven’t found the cause yet; data and marketing are both working hard to track it down.”
Jack frowned, flipping through the report. Suddenly, his eyes narrowed. “Maxwell.”
Howard looked confused. “Why does that name sound familiar?”
“Maxwell from GreenRidge Group.”
That man, Wesley’s father was the one who ran his mouth at the police station.

Howard’s eyes lit up. “Right, now I remember. But we don’t have any partnerships with GreenRidge Group, no financial ties either, so why would they…”
Jack didn’t explain. “Prepare a meeting.”
His expression was grim; he clearly sensed that this fluctuation was unusual-and a major headache.
Howard nodded and went off to organize the meeting.
At the Ford residence, Rowena was practically in tears as she looked at the wound on Elowyn’s leg.
“How could Elina be so cruel? She won’t even go easy on her own sister?”
“Mom, it really hurts. She put her whole strength into that kick.”
Rowena scowled at the way her daughter pouted and whined; her heart ached with rage.
“This can’t just be brushed aside.”
Elowyn leaned against her, choking up. “Don’t be too angry… But I overheard something at the hospital. Sounds like she’s got herself some rich new backer. Drove up to work this morning in a million-dollar car.”
Rowena’s expression shifted. “Are you serious?”
‘That’s what everyone at the hospital’s saying. And you know how they all side with her; they wouldn’t make that kind of thing up.”
A sharp gleam appeared in Rowena’s eyes. “So that’s why she agreed to the divorce so quickly, she already has someone else lined up. And with that kind of connection, she’s keeping it all to herself? Not helping your father’s company is bad enough, but to treat you like this too?”
Her voice came through gritted teeth, thick with anger.
