Rowena continued, “I heard he’s bringing your father a major international project. You’d better not act up again and upset him.”

Hearing this, Elowyn brightened. “Really? Fraser is coming back? Of course I won’t act up, I love him the most. I’ll make sure he feels right at home.”

Rowena chuckled, unaware of the sharp undertone in her daughter’s voice; she simply reached out and stroked Elowyn’s hair.

“You’re in your twenties and still act like a little kid.”

“In front of you, I’ll always be your little girl.”

The only room in the Ford residence decorated with any real luxury was Elowyn’s bedroom. Inside that room, mother and daughter sat together, looking affectionate-but each harbored her own agenda.

Rowena was thinking about how to get money out of Elina. That ungrateful daughter had married into the Mansor family but hadn’t given a single cent back to her own family.

Elowyn, meanwhile, was thinking about Fraser.

A distant relative from the Ford side of the family, Fraser was just three years older than Elowyn and one year older than Elina.

The Ayla family had moved overseas in the previous generation; because Ronald had been close with Fraser’s late father, Fraser had lived with the Ford family while attending high school in the country.

The three of them, close in age, naturally got along well. Elina and Fraser especially shared a strong bond.

The two had top grades and were only a year apart in school; they had more in common and often chatted for hours, completely ignoring Elowyn.

Already jealous of Elina, Elowyn had grown even more resentful seeing their handsome cousin orbiting Elina like she was the center of his world.

Thankfully, during their final year of high school, Fraser returned overseas to continue his studies, and Elowyn was spared the daily spectacle of watching Elina be the object of his affection.

But this time, with Fraser coming back, she wasn’t going to give Elina another chance. She’d make sure Fraser saw only her.

For the next two days, Elina made sure to visit Benjamin only during times Jack was unlikely to be around.

Benjamin’s condition had improved considerably; some days, he even had his caregiver wheel him outside for fresh air.

“You’ve been avoiding Jack lately. Still fighting with him?”

He asked the question while watching Elina peel fruit for him, his tone lined with concern.

Without even looking up, Elina replied, “No. Don’t worry about us, we’re doing fine.”

“Then how come I heard from someone at the hospital that you two are about to get divorced, or already have?”

Benjamin sounded puzzled, his eyes filled with suspicion as he looked at her.

Elina’s hand paused for a brief second; then she looked up. “How could that be? Don’t listen to those ridiculous rumors. We have a child-do you think we’d just get divorced like it’s nothing?”

She smiled, just enough to put the old man at ease.

“That’s good,” he said with a laugh. “Couples fight-it’s normal. You argue at the head of the bed and make up at the foot of it. You’re both good kids; I know you won’t give me cause to worry.

“But if Jack ever mistreats you, you have to tell me. If you don’t want to confront him yourself, I will. I’ll put that boy in his place.”

Elina finished slicing the fruit, sticking toothpicks into each piece.

“I won’t hide anything from you, grandpa.”

Even as she said it, guilt crept into her chest; she couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes.

The room still smelled of antiseptic, but the afternoon was calm and quiet.

Benjamin was wide awake and had no plans to nap, so the two chatted idly for a while.

Soon, the door creaked open. Rowena walked in carrying a bouquet and a fruit basket.

The moment she saw Elina, her smile faltered, though her eyes flicked over quickly in a calculating glance.

“Mr. Benjamin, how are you feeling? I heard you were hospitalized a while back, but we’ve had things going on at home, and I couldn’t get away until now. I’m sorry for the delay.”

She turned to Elina and added pointedly, “Lina, since you work at the hospital, you should really make more of an effort to visit Mr. Benjamin. He’s always been so kind to you; you shouldn’t find it troublesome.”

At the sound of her voice, Elina’s brow creased slightly.

But Benjamin suddenly reached over and patted Elina’s hand gently. “Lina’s been wonderful. Better than anyone. She’s like a granddaughter to me, comes to see me every single day. If you’re going to talk like that, I’m not going to be happy.”

He was clearly defending Elina; Rowena’s forced smile almost cracked under the strain.
