Bittersweet thoughts, tinged with a quiet longing, spread through his veins like wildfire.

Jack stared into Elina’s eyes; for a moment, he couldn’t look away.

It wasn’t until his phone buzzed again that he snapped out of it, forcing his mind back into order. What the heck am I doing?

All he’d done was catch a glimpse of a side of Elina he’d never seen before, yet that alone had been enough to stir such irrational thoughts.

The name “Elowyn” flashing on the screen felt like a curse; guilt welled up inside him.

He couldn’t allow his mind to spiral; even that would count as betrayal.

He didn’t even like Elina.

At that thought, the warmth on Jack’s face disappeared, replaced once again by cold detachment.

He turned and walked away without sparing Elina another glance.

But after just two steps, a wave of unfamiliar longing surged up in him like a rising tide.

Jack stopped in his tracks, inhaling deeply, fighting to suppress the madness clawing at his chest. What had Elina ever done to move him like this?

Nothing, she’d done absolutely nothing. The only thing that had changed… was his own wavering heart.

Jack frowned, clenched his jaw, and forced himself to remember.

She had climbed into his bed drunk, shameless and manipulative.

Maybe she hadn’t changed at all; maybe everything she was doing now was just another ploy to get his

attention.

He would never let her get away with it.

Elina had no idea what Jack was thinking. She only knew that after managing to get Madam Lyla to leave with the local goods, Jack had vanished entirely.

She glanced toward the now-empty doorway, raising an eyebrow.

She hadn’t noticed when exactly he’d left, but it didn’t matter to her in the slightest.

The further they stayed from her work and her life, the better. That was exactly what she wanted.

Half an hour later, the patient who had undergone the computed tomography scan was wheeled into

surgery.

The procedure had been bumped to urgent status; Elina snapped into full focus, pushing everything else from her mind as she helped guide the patient out of danger.

By the time she walked out of the operating room, night had fallen.

She checked the time, her body bone-tired. Deciding to visit Benjamin tomorrow instead, she started heading home.

But as soon as she stepped out of the hospital, she ran straight into Jaslyn, who was getting out of the car with Elowyn.

The two of them were holding hands, as close and affectionate as a loving mother and daughter.

Elowyn was the first to spot Elina. She immediately let go of Jaslyn’s hand, looking guilty, then said in a syrupy voice, “Elina, you’re off work? Don’t be mad, I just brought Jaslyn to visit-”

Before she could finish, Elina walked right past them without a glance, heading for the parking lot.

Elowyn paused, frowning slightly with her back to Elina.

Just then, Jack finished parking. He got out of the car-and came face-to-face with Elina.

Their eyes met like enemies on a battlefield; not a flicker of emotion passed between them, only coldness and distance.

Jack couldn’t help himself. “Is it really necessary to glare at me every time you see me?”

Elina still didn’t say a word as she reached her car.

Watching her open the door, Jack’s gaze fell on the new vehicle. His breath caught.

“Who bought you this car?”

He stepped forward and grabbed her arm, unwilling to let her go.

Elina turned her head and stared at his hand. “None of your business.”

“We’ve only filed for divorce; it hasn’t been finalized. Don’t forget-if I decide to withdraw the application, it’ll be canceled anytime I want.”

Jack’s voice was taut with anger, each word gritted through clenched teeth-yet Elina’s face remained completely unmoved.
