Chapter 63 Stop Crying or We Leave

Off to the side, Elowyn curved her lips into a slight smile, lowering her head to hide it. Still, her words came with a soft sigh.
“Don’t be scared. I’ll take care of Jaslyn, and look after you and your daddy too.”
Jaslyn lay against Jack’s shoulder, biting her lip. She didn’t dare cry out loud, but she couldn’t hold back her emotions either.
No matter what, she was still just a five-year-old child.
Jack felt the tiny tremors of her sobs on his shoulder. He gently patted her back, then turned to Elowyn.
“You okay?”
Elowyn shook her head, eyes rimmed with red. “I’m fine-as long as Jaslyn’s okay.”
Jaslyn’s sobs gradually faded; in a soft, childish voice, she said, “Jaslyn has Daddy and Aunt Elowyn. Jaslyn will be strong.”
“Pull yourself together,” Jack told her. “When we see Great-grandpa, no more tears—or we’ll turn right back around.”
She bit her lip and nodded hard. “I won’t make Great-grandpa worry.”
Elowyn forced a smile. “Then let’s go up. We shouldn’t keep Mr. Benjamin waiting.”
It was already getting late; any later and Benjamin would likely be asleep. And then Jaslyn would have no chance to go in and act cute.
She trailed behind Jack and Jaslyn, eyes fixed on their backs, unable to suppress the smile tugging at her lips.
She had been worried that Elina, always at the hospital, would use the back-and-forth with Jack as an excuse to get close to him again. That was why she’d kept scheming, doing everything she could to prevent them from spending time alone.
But today, Elina had practically handed her the perfect opportunity to deepen the wedge between Jack and Jaslyn.
When the three of them reached the hospital room, Elowyn came to a stop.
“Jack, I’ll wait outside. Mr. Benjamin doesn’t like seeing me, and I don’t want to ruin his mood.”
She said it with just the right note of grievance, and sure enough, Jack frowned slightly in sympathy.
“Okay. We won’t be long.”
Hearing his reply, though he didn’t stand up for her or bring her inside to face Benjamin, Elowyn still felt
satisfied.

As long as Jack cared just a little more each time, she believed it was only a matter of time before she completely replaced Elina and officially became Mrs. Mansor.
Not long after, bursts of laughter drifted out from the hospital room.
Benjamin seemed genuinely amused by Jaslyn; his deep, hearty laughter made it hard to believe he was even sick.
Elowyn heard it and pressed her lips together.
She’d expected Jaslyn to cling to the old man, maybe even repeat what had just happened outside; she hadn’t imagined such a warm and cheerful scene.
Too bad she couldn’t barge in right now. No matter what she said, she’d only ruin the moment. But soon enough, she’d make sure Benjamin knew all about Elina’s “good deeds.”
Peering through the glass window on the hospital room door, Elowyn consoled herself.
No rush. There’s still plenty of time. That night, after they left the hospital, Jaslyn’s spirits were clearly low.
Seeing this, Elowyn offered, “Jack, why don’t I stay with Jaslyn tonight?”
Through the rearview mirror, Jack glanced at Jaslyn, who had cried herself to sleep, tears still on her cheeks. He gave a slight nod.
“Thanks for staying with her.”
He was never good at comforting kids-though Jaslyn had always been pretty easy to console.
Back at the villa, Lisa had already prepared a hot bath and then gone off to bed.
She sat in her room, phone in hand, debating whether to message Elina about Elowyn spending the night at the villa.
Suddenly, a noise came from outside.
Lisa opened the door and spotted Jack in the kitchen, standing by the counter.
He was holding a glass of water, staring into it as if lost in thought.
Jack couldn’t understand it, Elowyn was there, the housekeeper had returned, yet something still felt ofl.
Without Elina’s voice in the villa, it felt like something was missing.
Like something was missing in his heart too.
Lisa stepped forward, breaking the silence. “Sir, is there anything you need?”
He snapped out of it and set the glass down. “No, nothing.”
