“I told you, as long as we stay away from each other, there won’t be any more problems.”

As the words left her mouth, she yanked her arm free from Jack’s grasp and strode toward the door.
‘Elina, if you dare walk out that door, don’t expect me to invest in the hospital again!”
Jack dropped the hammer; his voice was laced with threat.
He was sure, within three seconds, Elina would turn around. He knew just how much the hospital meant to
ner.
But she only paused for a moment.
Without even glancing back, she replied, “If your investment is just another way to torture me, then do whatever you want.”
With that, Elina turned the handle and walked out.
ack stepped forward, then stopped short.
All these years, he had never once lowered himself in front of Elina—not even a little.
Yet today, he felt an overwhelming urge to break through his own pride, to chase after her and ask her to come home.
But before he could take that step, Elina’s phone rang. She answered it.
Xenon, I’m not at the hospital right now…”
As her voice faded down the hallway, Jack’s hands clenched into fists at his sides.
Xenon. Again. He froze, and whatever resolve he had vanished in an instant.
Elina returned to the seventh floor.
Despite the tension and conflict earlier, she still finished teaching all her scheduled classes before leaving.
At exactly 6 PM, she walked out of Mansor Group, her pace brisk, not stopping for a second.
She didn’t want to see Jack or Elowyn ever again.
What she didn’t expect was that the next day, upon arriving at the hospital, she would hear from the director that Mansor Group was pulling their investment.
She had assumed Jack was just venting; she hadn’t thought he’d actually go through with it.
“I don’t know what happened, suddenly they said they’re pulling out.”
The director ran into her in the lobby, his brows deeply furrowed, his expression full of worry.

If the investment was withdrawn, not only would the research fall behind schedule, but the newly formed research team might have to disband entirely.
The financial loss was one thing; what mattered more was the wasted effort and momentum.
Elina’s heart sank. She thought of Jack’s words from the day before and saw the disappointed look on the director’s face, guilt settled in her chest.
After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to come clean. “Director, yesterday, it was because-”
But before she could finish, the director gently patted her shoulder. “This has nothing to do with you. You’ve done so much for the hospital; I haven’t even thanked you yet. How could I blame you?”
It was as if he already knew something about the story behind Mansor Group’s investment. With a sigh, he even offered her a comforting smile.
But Elina didn’t feel comforted at all; her guilt only deepened.
“Where are you headed now?” she asked softly.
“To Mansor Group. I want to see if there’s still room to turn this around. I don’t believe Mr. Mansor is the kind of man who’d make such a rash decision out of anger.”
With that, the director turned and walked off.
Watching his slightly hunched back, Elina pressed her lips together.
She pulled out her phone and instinctively found Jack’s number.
She didn’t want to be tangled up with him anymore; she’d meant it. But somehow, everything in her life kept pushing her back toward him.
Still, she couldn’t let the director, an elderly man go and plead on her behalf.
Her finger hovered over the call button. Finally, she made up her mind.
Suddenly, a familiar voice pulled her out of her thoughts.
“Lina, there you are.” Benjamin was being wheeled into the hospital by a nurse and spotted her right away. “Heard you’ve been training the hospital’s medical team lately. That punk Jack better be paying you, right?”
His half-joking comment floated to her ears. Elina looked up at him.
“Grandpa, what are you doing here?”
“Didn’t I have a follow-up today?” He reached out and took her hand. “Why don’t you come with me?”
Elina nodded. “It works out-I’m off today. I was just doing a few rounds to check on patients.”
