Benjamin grabbed the cane resting on his wheelchair and smacked Jack hard across the leg.

Jack tightened his grip on her arm. “If anything happens to Grandpa, I won’t let you off the hook.”

It was true, she had been the one to bring this up today.

She knew Benjamin cared about her.

Elina was silent for a moment; then she met Jack’s eyes. “You should be saying that to yourself.”

Elina furrowed her brow, trying to recall. Only after some thought did she vaguely remember saying those things, things she hadn’t meant, just to put Benjamin at ease.

She opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Jack cut in again. “Since you admitted you love me, you should take the step I’ve laid out for you.”

“You misunderstood,” Elina said, lifting her eyes to meet Jack’s. Her gaze was sharp.

Her expression was complicated, but there wasn’t a trace of affection in it. “I only said those things to make Grandpa feel better.”

Jack stared at her in stunned silence. It took him a long moment to react.

Then he snapped, “Just so I’d keep softening toward you-you even lied to yourself?”
