Fraser made the suggestion, but Elina’s expression faltered. “If you’re having lunch with them today, I’ll reat you another time.”
What happened? You fought with aunt again?”
Elina lowered her eyes and walked ahead in silence.
Fraser followed, frowning. “You really did? I thought you said you’d grown up and now you’re back to giving your parents the silent treatment, just like when you were a kid.”
Her brow furrowed even deeper. “And you’re still the same, always assuming it’s my fault without knowing he full story. Just because they’re the adults, they must be right?”
The cheerful mood from their reunion quickly soured, turning awkward and heavy.
Fraser pressed his lips together, then relaxed his brow and softened his tone. “Sure, the people who raised you couldn’t have made that many mistakes. But today, I’m not taking their side. To make it up to you, unch is on me.”
He backed down first; even if Elina had been upset, she wouldn’t hold onto it for long.
she managed a small smile. “Alright, but you’re not allowed to back out.”
Fraser chuckled and casually slung his arm around her shoulders. “Of course not!”
They picked a restaurant they used to love back in their school days.
As soon as they sat down, Fraser sighed. “Remember how Elowyn, even though she was a bit younger than is, used to trail behind and copy everything we said like a little grown-up?”
His face lit up with nostalgia, but Elina couldn’t find it in herself to smile.
No one else knew the things Elowyn had done, but she did.
Even as her biological sister, Elina couldn’t bring herself to like her anymore,
“What’s wrong? Did you two get into a fight too?” Fraser caught the change in her expression and frowned.
“I remember you always being generous, you never fought with Elowyn over anything. If you two argued, she must’ve been the one who crossed the line. Tell me. If they are spoiling her again, I’ll scold her myself.”
That one sentence alone was enough.
Hearing it, a weight lifted from Elina’s chest. “If you really did scold her, aunt and uncle would probably turn on you instead.”
Seeing her finally smile, Fraser let out a quiet breath of relief.
He had never liked seeing Elina upset, it always felt like something inside him cracked whenever her expression fell.

“So what?” he said. “If something makes Lina unhappy, it’s my job as her brother to fix it. Even if it’s Elowyn, she’s no exception.”
With just a few words, Fraser managed to coax a deeper smile from her.
It had been a long time since they’d seen each other, and Elina made an exception by having a glass of red
wine.
But even though they’d just reunited, it felt like no time had passed at all-talking to Fraser was still as easy and natural as it had been when they were kids. There was no distance between them.
They were laughing and reminiscing when a sharp ring from Fraser’s phone interrupted their conversation.
He glanced at the screen, pressed his lips together, and said, “It’s Elowyn.”
Elina didn’t respond, but Fraser leaned in and coaxed, “Want me to scold her for you?”
She knew he was joking, but still, she couldn’t help hoping he meant it.
In her not-so-happy childhood and adolescence, Fraser had been a rare ray of light besides Jack, someone who had once brightened the darker corners of her life and left behind genuinely warm memories.
Because of Fraser, she had learned that she, too, could be loved by someone older and protective, even if he was only slightly older than her.
