Chapter 81 The Only One Who Knows

Elina lowered her head and took a sip of water without saying a word.

Seeing her go quiet, Fraser finally turned to her and said, “Elowyn’s just straightforward by nature. If she said something that upset you, don’t take it to heart. You know she doesn’t mean any harm.”

Elina gave a small nod, then suddenly looked up at him.

“Fraser, are you finished eating?”

Fraser froze when he caught the distant calmness in her eyes.

He leaned in slightly and asked, “Are you mad at me? Do you think I’m taking Elowyn’s side?”

Elina smiled faintly. “You misunderstood. That’s not what I meant.”

He had clearly noticed the same thing himself, yet still asked aloud as if unaware.

She had been so foolish-how could she expect someone she hadn’t seen in years to still be the same boy from childhood?

Elina no longer had the energy to deal with anything related to the Ford family.

With that thought, she called for the waiter.

But when it came time to pay the bill, Fraser beat her to it.

“I said I was treating you-how could I let you pay?”

Elina saw him get to it before she could and said nothing.

She simply replied, “Thank you, Fraser.”

After they left the restaurant, Fraser felt like the woman walking beside him had become an entirely different person from just an hour ago-silent, withdrawn.

“Lina, I’ve never been the sensitive type. You’ve always known that. But if I did anything to upset you, you can just tell me.”

He walked at her side, unable to accept her cold distance or the air of detachment surrounding her.

Elina’s tone was light. “It’s nothing. I just remembered some work stuff.”

“I know I’m not the most perceptive,” Fraser said, stepping in front of her to block her path, “but when it comes to you, I know you well enough. You’re clearly upset but won’t tell me why.”

Back when she was a teenager, Elina had to rely on this brother just to make life at home a little easier.

Now, so many years later, even as she saw that same concern on Fraser’s face, the trust she once had in him was gone.

Elina stopped walking. When she looked up at him, she tried to find a trace of the earnest boy from their youth-but it just wasn’t there.

She took a deep breath and decided to give herself one more chance.

“You’re the only person in this world who knows what the Ford family did to me-besides me.

“Elowyn’s always had a way of twisting the truth, and with our parents behind her, if I tell the truth… would you really believe me?”

Fraser looked slightly confused. “Of course I would. No matter what you say, I’ll believe you. If you’ve been wronged, you can tell me anything.”

“All right. Then if I tell you that Elowyn was the one who abandoned Jack first, and because of some misunderstanding, I ended up marrying him…

“And when I finally made peace with the fact that my husband didn’t love me and just wanted to live quietly, Elowyn came back-with the whole Ford family-pressuring me to divorce Jack…

“Would you believe that?”

If there was still one person in the world Elina was willing to open up to, it was the Fraser from her teenage years.

And now, as the man before her overlapped with that boy in her teary vision, she seemed to forget where she even was.

She had stayed silent for so long, buried her pain so deep-but now she couldn’t hold it in any longer. Everything just poured out.

Fraser stared at her, eyes filled with complicated emotion.

But mostly, what showed through was heartbreak.

Still, he hesitated. “You’re saying… Elowyn ruined your marriage?”

“Yes. I’ve already filed for divorce from Jack, but we’ve kept it secret so Mr. Benjamin wouldn’t
