I woke up really pressed. I was on a bathroom break when I heard an urgent knock on the door.

It sounded like a desperate attempt to break down the door.

I wondered who it was banging on our door in the middle of the night.

Before I could step out of the bathroom, Theo answered the door.

When I came out, I saw Lucien standing by the door. He looked worried, and I wondered why.

The moment he saw me, he ignored Theo and rushed over to me.

“Kaia, please, I need your help”, he began, without blinking. “I could understand if you choose not to help me, but I have no choice but to come to you at this hour”

Lucien looked back and glared at Theo, thinking over the words lumping in his throat.

“What is this about?” I asked, seeing how Theo didn’t say anything. “Look at the time”

“I’m sorry to bang in here at this hour, but Elara isn’t well, and I can’t get her to the clinic at this hour” Lucien hesitated. “Could you please take a look at her? You might know a way to help her”

I looked at Theo, and neither of us spoke.

It’s my duty as a healer to help the sick, no matter who they are.

I was silently informing him because I wasn’t going to leave Elara untreated because of the bad blood between us.

A patient comes first before animosity..

“Where is she?” Theo asked, walking to the closet.

“Shes in our room burning up like a furnace”, Lucien answered. It was the first time I saw them interact after that incident. “Im afraid something might have to her”

“It’s okay, nothing will happen to her,” I assuringly said and grabbed my robe. “Let’s go, I will take a look at her”

I motioned for him to lead the way, and he did, while Theo and I followed.

When we got there, Elara was genuinely sick. I could see her losing consciousness.

She was twisting and tossing when I saw her. Sweat glistened on her burning skin, and her eyes were blood red.

I took her tests and kept talking her through them because if she fell asleep, I wouldn’t be able to get an accurate diagnosis.

After diagnosing her, I prepared a glass of medicine for her, and Lucien made her drink it.

When she was stable enough, Theo and I returned to our room.

“What’s wrong with her?” Theo asked, and I turned to face him. “No, don’t tell me. I was asking”

I knew what he was thinking, but I wasn’t jealous if that was what made him change his mind.

“Shd has dengue,” I replied. “She needs to visit the clinic and get proper treatment”

“Im glad you were there to help her at this hour,” Theo said. “She wouldn’t have lasted until the morning if you didn’t help with initial treatment”

“Im happy I was able to help her,” I walked closer to him, wrapping my arms around his waist. “And you helped with grinding the herbs; ulu deserves some accolades”

I tiptoed and kissed his lips. He leaned closer and lifted me into his arms, kissing me deeply.

We kissed for a hot minute, and I found myself curling my toes; my core was twitching with need.

We broke the kiss, and Theo dropped me back on my feet, but I hugged him and remained in his arms.

“You know, Theo,” I beamed at him. “Im not jealous of Elara, you don’t have to stop yourself from asking about her”

Theo looked at me, probably wondering what I was getting at, or he had already guessed it.

“No, I didn’t mean that, blue eyes”, Theo said, and I put a finger over his lips and shut him up. “I was just

“I know,” I said, nodding. “You didn’t want to make me uncomfortable by asking about her. But, Elara isn’t just someone you can discard if you stop asking about her. She was your childhood friend, that meant something to you, and you are allowed to be worried about her”

“But Kaia -”

“It’s okay, Theo. Really, I’m not jealous, I know I’m the one you loved. I have no reason to be jealous of you asking about your friend who happened to be your ex-girlfriend,” I said, interrupting him.

Theo hugged me tightly and kissed my forehead. He didn’t know what else to say.

“I love you, Kaia,” Theo cried. “You are the only one I love; there is no other person, and there will never be another person.”

“I know, I love you too, Theo”, I said, and we kissed passionately.

Soon after, we returned to bed and fell asleep.

When we woke up the next morning, it was the New Moon day, and everyone was preparing for the pack runs later that evening.

I looked around and didn’t see Lucien or Elara. I presumed she was still very sick.

I wanted to take a look at her, but I stopped myself.

I wouldn’t want them to think I have an ulterior motive for caring about her.

I went to the courtyard, and the maids were busying themselves preparing a big feast for later.

Theo told me that pack runs were usually a big celebration; they would eat together in big circles after the runs. Thus, they typically prepare a big meal beforehand.

Justine was overseeing the preparation, and Cara was there too.

It was my first pack run, so I had no idea what to do. I’m glad Justine was there to help; otherwise, it would have been a total flop.

Theo would have been disgraced for getting himself an unfit Lama.

“Have a taste, Kaia”, Justine beckoned to me when she saw me enter the courtyard. “It’s tonight’s speciality, you should try it”

I leaned in to look at the yummy pot of beetroot porridge, and I was tempted to try it.

She offered me a spoonful, and I took it. I poured it into my palm and tasted it.

It was wild, the best thing I’ve tasted in a long time, but of course, the chicken Manchurian I had was the best thing I had since I got here.

“Justine, babe, this is so tasty!” I exclaimed, and Justine smiled at me. “I didn’t know you were such a great chef”

“Dont flatter me too much, Kaia, it might get into my head”, Justine muttered, and we both laughed.

“As it should! You deserve a trophy for making this delicious porridge. A little praise is nothing in comparison to what you made,” I said, and Justine blushed at my words.

Honestly, Justine is the most beautiful and kind-hearted Beta luna I’ve come into contact with.

Back in Silvermoon, the beta hadn’t found his mate yet. But the other packs we had an alliance with had very snobbish beta. lunas, who weren’t on excellent terms with their Lunas.

They would fight and argue with me at meetings. I often wondered how they lived in the same pack with the disunity amongst them.

But Justine is not like that; she doesn’t want power or position; all she wants is to love and support her mate and the people he loves, including me.

I am grateful to have been one of those people because I got to be friends with a person like Justine.

“Im going to treat you to a good meal one of these days,” Justine offered, and my eyes lit up. “I had been too busy to make you something nice. But don’t worry, after the pack runs, we won’t be busy until the All Packs Games tournament, coming up in two weeks. I have enough time to pamper you before we leave for the Nightshade pack. I hope you have enough room to eat to your heart’s content,” Justine asked, smiling as she turned the porridge.

“Are you threatening me with a good time, Justine?” I asked, chuckling. “If I didn’t tell you before, let me tell you, I’m a foodie. Food makes everything worthwhile; I can’t reject it. So, make as much foodjas you want to, I will eat them all”

Justine looked at me with admiration, and I realised I had chatted away, blabbering without realising it.

“I’m sorry, Justine, I got carried away and chatted non-stop”, I apologised, feeling a little embarrassed.

“Oh no, don’t be sorry,” Justine urged. “I really enjoyed talking to you. And it’s so cute to see someone who enjoys eating as much as I enjoy making. I will make everything you like, send it to me on snap”

“Sure! I will do that, thank you,” I excitedly hugged her.

I went to check on other preparations, and everything was almost done.

I didn’t have to do much as Luna, sit around and give instructions; it was easy.

Cara and I locked eyes a few times, but we huffed and looked away immediately.

I know she was in trouble, and she was looking for an opportunity to activate her madness. I wasn’t going to let her have a chance at it. Not today, when everything seemed joyful for the first time in a while.

And I realised she was overseeing the preparation instead of looking after Elara, who was seriously ill.

That was unheard of. Unless Lucien didn’t

tell her about it. But still, she would have found out if she had gone to see Elara herself.

I buried my thoughts and finished up the preparation. Then, I returned to the kitchen to grab lunch.

I was heading out after grabbing my lunch when I saw Lucidn taking Elara out. I guessed he was taking her to the clinic.

I didn’t want to disturb them, so I didn’t go up to them to ask how she was doing.

I watched until their car disappeared. I wondered if Elara would be able to join the pack runs tonight.

It was her first pack run in Shadowclaw as a mated she-wolf. It would be such a shame if sickness stopped her from joining

I ate my lunch and returned to have tea with Justine; without her, the preparation would have been left incomplete.

Before I knew it, it was evening, and the pack was bustling as pack members gathered for the runs to start.

I stood with Theo while the high chief broke a coconut and other things, offering them to the moon goddess in gratitude for the new moon, which signifies a new beginning.

“To the goddess, who never stopped blessing us. Have your share and provide us with more,” The high chief declared.

“To the moon goddess. Hail the goddess Selene!” everyone echoed in unison,

After that, the high chief looked at the moon, and it had risen.

“The pack runs begin now”, he declared, and everyone began to shift into their wolf forms.

Theo went first, and he looked so gorgeous in his wolf form. I was drooling. I forgot to shift.
