“Kaia Nightshade, who permitted you to speak in the honourable court?” Garry asked, and a murmur burst out.

The members of the council looked at me as if I had committed crime.

Theo locked

eyes with me, pleading with me to sit down, and he would handle it.

But I know better than to listen to him; he won’t handle shit, he would be swallowed by their gang up.

“As Alpha Theo’s mate, I’m permitted to speak in this court, your honour,” I boldly stated.

“Bullshit!” a councillor snapped. “You are his bedmate, not his wife yet, so you can’t say anything here. Quietly sit down, or you’ll be escorted outside”

“I was told the most important relationship is what the goddess ordained, not what we conduct. So, why doesn’t it hold grounds now?” I asked.

“Obviously, because you and Alpha Theo are not fated mates”, another person said.

I chuckled in self-pity.

“Very well then,” I said. “If I can’t speak as his mate, I have the roght as the mother of his child because whatever happens to him will affect my child’s life”

When they heard this, the courtroom was adjourned, and they argued among themselves before reaching an agreement.

“If I may proceed with what I was saying,” I said, and they raised their heads, giving me attention. “There is no proof that Theo sent out the orders”

“But there are proofs, Lady Kaia”, Garry said. “The letters and scrolls had his stamp and signatures”

“Those can be easily fabricated,” I argued. “Besides, who was the enforcer who collected the order letter from him directly?” I asked, and they couldn’t answer.

“That doesn’t matter, Lady Kaia. What matters is that Alpha Thre committed war crimes against a helpless community, and it’s against the peace treaty pact”

“This is exactly why we need to present the enforcer and make him testify that Alpha Theo handed the order letter with the pack stamp to him”, I said. “This way, we wouldn’t have to waste the court’s and my time. The judgment can be decided right here and now”

They glanced at each other, and I knew I had them where they didnt expect

“What are you waiting for? Please call the enforcer and the soldiers who went with him to carry out Alpha Theo’s orders,” I said, and it was radio silent.

“What’s going on, your honour?” I asked Garry directly, who looked at the other members.

Nobody spoke.

Theo stood at the centre, still waiting for the council to continue

Meanwhile, I spotted Kingley smiling at me from his lane, and I wondered why I hadn’t seen him earlier.

“The enforcer who got the order from the Alpha isn’t available for questioning today, unfortunately Carry said I could sense a hint of regret in his voice.

Chapter 144

I assumed it was because he couldn’t implicate Theo now without raising questions.

“The meeting has been adjourned to next week”, Garry said, and hit the gravel.

I smiled and walked up to Theo while everyone else exited the room.

I took my hand, looked into my face. He didn’t know what to say, so I hugged him.

He was overwhelmed, and I could understand what he was going through.

“Let’s go,” I muttered, taking his hand and walking out.

When we got to the limo, I saw a lot of people looking at us, but they didn’t approach us. I rested knowing that they weren’t coming to disturb Theo in this statement.

As I entered the vehicle, I caught sight of Garry Walter, the speaker, and we locked eyes for a moment.

He looked aside and walked away.

That gave me an unsettling feeling, and I couldn’t help but feel suspicious of him.

For some reason, I felt he had a hand in this.

We returned home. Theo went to his office to attend to an urgent matter, while I linked the girls to meet up.

“Kaia, you are insane!” Justine exclaimed the moment she arrived. “I heard what you did in court today. You were totally badass, and you saved Theo”

“I did nothing extraordinary, Justine”, I breathed. I was worried. It was just the little I could do to help”

Justine gave me a dirty look, rolling her eyes at my words.

“Stop talking down on yourself, Miss Kaia Nightshade”, she called me by my full name, and I knew she was irritated as hell. “If you weren’t there, Theo would have been in deep trouble”

“Yes, Kaia,” Maliya chimed in. “You did something extraordinary and we are all grateful for your help”

I took a deep breath; my blood was hot and gushing. I was worried and scared.

“I was only able to get the case adjourned, we need solid evidence to prove his innocence and get the case thrown out”, I said, amd they nodded.

“What do we have to do?” Maliya asked.

I sighed, remembering all that took place in court today. An idea popped into my head.

“We need to run a check on all the council members,” I suggested. “I have a feeling they have something to do with what’s going on, especially the speaker, Garry Walter; he was acting all suspicious. He was pushing Theo admit to something he didn’t do”

“I think we are forgetting some very important people we should be suspecting,” Maliya said.

“Yes,” Justine said. “Cara and Lucien are capable of framing the Alpha; they should be our prime suspects”

“I agree, but Lucien isn’t stupid enough to frame Theo, at least not directly”, I pondered. Justine shook her head.

“What made you think Lucien, who attacked his brother severely because he couldn’t become Alpha, wouldn’t frame hin for war crimes?” Justine asked. “Let’s not forget that if the alphas found guilty, he would be asked to step down and might even be banished. We all know who’s next on the line to become Alpha”

When she framed it from this angle, I saw everything clearly, bu I still doubted Lucien would do this.

Yes, he wants to be Alpha and everything, but he wouldn’t attack he pack and make Theo take the fall.

“I get what you’re saying, but I still think focusing on Lucien would make us lose sight of the real culprits”, I said, and they nodded.

“You have a point there,” Justine said.

“So, let’s do this,” I said. “Justine, investigate the council members. I want to know everything about every single one of them: their families, little secrets and associates.

Maliya, you’ll keep an eye on Cara’s every move and report back on everything. Also, keep an eye on every single person in the pack house. If you find anything suspicious, dont hesitate to let me know,” I instructed, and Maliya nodded.

“And, I will look into the case again,” I said. “We only have a few days before the next hearing”

“Alright,” Justine said. “You must be tired. Go and get some rest. We will let you know if anything comes up”

Justine was right; I was tired, but the looming case had me in a chokehold, and I wouldn’t be able to rest until Theo was acquitted of all the accusations.

“Okay, I’m leaving, girls,” I said, getting up.

I returned to the bedroom, and Theo was sitting there when I got in.

He smiled when he saw me, and I could tell he hadn’t had a good day. His face looked tired and sagged from worrying.

I went to him, hugged his waist, and he hugged me back, taking in my scent, and I let him.

“Theo,” I called out to him, breaking the hug. “You reek of anxiety, and it’s not good for you,” I told him, and he sighed.

He stepped out of my arms and stood close to the window, gazing out of it.

“I can’t help it, Kaia”, he said, looking out the window. “I would never do what they are accusing me of, but at the same time, if I can’t prove my innocence, I would be asked to step down, and I might even get banished along with you”

He looked at me, and I saw tears straining under his eyelids, and my heart broke.

“I do not want it to come to that, but I do not know how to prove my innocence; they have evidence, and all I have is myself. They are plotting against me, and they seem prepared”

I cupped his hand and gently squeezed it.

“You have to calm down, Theo”, I said, still squeezing his hand.

“You haven’t done anything wrong, and we will prove this in court soon,” I said, and he nodded.

“The only people who should be scared are the real culprits, plotting against you”

“Im not scared for myself, Kaia”, Theo said. “I dont want our baby to be born in this toxic atmosphere. And what it I fail to prove my innocence? I will go into exile with you and our baby, that’s not something I imagined for our future”

Fear was evident in his eyes, and I was scared too, but one of us had to be stronger.

“Dont think about that, our baby wouldn’t be born for a little while. We can make everything roght before then, trust me.” I said, and he nodded.

“Come on, get some rest, you look tired”, I suggested and forced Theo to take a nap.

He needed it to calm his nerves. In the meantime, I will use my me productively,

When I was certain Theo was fast asleep, I covered him with the blanket and sneaked out of the room.

I didn’t wear my shoes, I tiptoed out of my room and silently walked to Lucien’s room.

Elara wasn’t back yet, so this was a perfect chance to carry out a search and clear my suspicion.

Thankfully, the hallway was cleared, and the maids and attendants had gone out for the weekend exercise.

The coast was free, and I took advantage of it.

I sneaked into the room and snooped around everything I could lay my

hands on.

I didn’t find anything suspicious, everything was in place, and I had wasted my precious time.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps, and I scrambled to hide. I don’t want to get caught.

I squeezed myself into the thin closet. I couldn’t breathe, but I stayed hidden, and someone walked in. I couldn’t see his face, but it was a man.

I heard a voice; I couldn’t make anything of it, but he seemed like an acquaintance of Lucien’s.

When he left the room, I was about to come out of hiding when something tugged at my shirt, pulling me back.

I turned to look, and I flinched in fear.
